Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel

#1 Post by jemmus »

Today's hard training in the dojo was in kenjutsu, using bokuto wooden swords. Followed by upper level ninjutsu training in erasing a target in their bath, using aiguchi (dagger), ninjato, kukiya (blowgun), kusari-jutsu (flexible weapons skill), ingested poison, or arson. The bruised and exhausted young ninja, but somehow physically and mentally refreshed (as always after a day in the dojo) finish the day's training. They bow to Kawaishi-sensei, and she bows back to them. The students start to depart. The sensei says, Minoru! Fuma! Jinsei! Kaida! You stay. The four stop and stand at attention. The sensei's face does not move, it shows no expression. A few seconds pass, then she quietly says, Turn around. The four do so and are startled to see two men and a woman there, standing two yards away. All clan elders. In the center, old Hari ("Needle")-sama. To his left a woman in her mid-fifties, Gosenkugi ("Spike)-sama. She is Kawaishi-sensei's mother. And to his right, a small, slight man, also in his fifties, missing his right hand. Tsubasa ("Feather")-sama. The young ninja bow respectfully, and the three return their bows.

Old Hari-sama speaks. Minoru. Fuma. Jinsei. Kaida. I have know you and watched you all since you were babies. You have been earnest students, worked very hard, done well in your training. I have seen all of you cry tears from exhaustion, physical pain, and pure, well-justified terror. You have done well, as we expected. You are now given a chance to repay the clan for the food, clothing, shelter and safety it has provided you from infancy to now. And a chance to provide the same for the ones younger than you, and the elderly too. You will not fail at what you are about to be told to do. He stops speaking.

Gosenkugi, the middle-age woman called Spike, says There is a merchant in Kofu named Tanaka Jiro. He specializes in buying and selling vegetable oil. For cooking, lamps, herbal tinctures, soaps and any kind of lubrication. He has grown quite wealthy, possibly because the war and the Takeda buying so many provisions and arms at high prices. He has grown wealthy enough that he has sought to rise in station by buying the Kofu summer villa of an impoverished noble of Kyoto. It's said to be in some disrepair, and that during the noble's ownership of it, a servant girl took her life in it. Jiro has a hook nose, which is quite a distinctive feature. Spike-sama holds a crooked finger beside her nose to provide a visual memory point. This Tanaka has been accused of mixing cheap animal grease into his oil, in violation of Buddhist law against killing and Shinto horror of contamination and pollution. It seems that he is not well-liked, even by his fellow merchants. Or especially not by them.

But the merchant is not the objective. The objective is a teacup. A humble enough sounding object. But this is one crafted by a late master ceramistist and Zen painter named Noritake. A unique work of art, and extremely valuable. And it is somewhere in Jiro's villa. We have been contracted to find the cup and retrieve it. That's all, plain and simple. You are given background information about the merchant's daily habits as a backup, so that you may have full information about what is known of the target. It shouldn't need to be said that the information is for making a well-considered plan for operations. And as information on how to plan a secondary operation, in case the first should fail."

It also goes without saying that the cup must be delivered intact. Unbroken from the blow of weapon, a fall, or any other mistake while on a mission-- and during the crucial successful return from it.
She pauses a moment. If you fail and are captured, your throat must not breathe breath for your mouth make words. This also goes without saying. You have graduated from training and are now selected for a mission for the clan. The woman eyes penentrate the young ninjas' own with seriousness. But not unkindly.

Short, slight and stern Tsubasa-sama does not hesitate. "Now you know the objective. Time for the logistics of it." He unrolls two ink-painted maps. He jabs a finger onto one of them. This is the Mura ("The Village"). This is Kofu.
Image
He indicates a spot on the other map. The merchant's villa is here in Kofu.
Image
"It isdistinguishable from an ordinary rich man's house because it is built in the shinden zukuri style of the nobles of Kyoto. In that style, two long open galleries lie alongside the courtyard garden. From them guests view performances, or view cherry blossom or the the Moon and compose haiku. There are other mansions in that district of Kai, but no other is built in the shinden zukuri style. Make sure you investigate the correct location, and no other.'

Next, your route to Kai. There is the mountain route, which is shorter, and good in the warmer months such as now, when there is little chance of being trapped by a snowstorm. But it is a wilderness route, and home to the beings of wild places. The river route is safer, and passable in winter. But it passes along human farmhouses and settlements. If you go this way, you must pose as peasants taking goods to the market. The clan would provide you with vegetables, dried fish, wild herbs, or firewood for this. To be thorough, you would have to vend the goods, and purchase common items that a mountain village would need-- salt, tea, iron pots, tools, fish hooks, and the like. We would provide a list of items the village actually needs. And some red herrings.

You should expect the merchant to have some ronin guards. Perhaps two to three of them, probably all bushi, but not necessarily. Armor is in high demand and expensive because of the war, and the Takeda clan of Kofu prohibit non-Takeda from wearing armor in the city. We wouldn't expect the ronin to be heavily armored. But the merchant Tanaka Jiro is wealthy, and money often makes exceptions to rules.

Old Needle-sama speaks again. Now, the kami will decide which of you must take the role and responsibility of the Rooster. The agent charged with deciding for the group, when there is no time or opportunity to discuss. And charged with the responsibility of saying when the mission cannot succeed and it must be aborted. And... with mercifully erasing a comrade who may be captured and cannot return. Kawaishi-sensei brings a small woven bamboo basket. Inside are three black stones and one white from a Go board. Draw one each. The drawer of the white stone must of course be the Rooster.

1 - Minoru
2 - Fuma
3 - Jinsei
4 - Kaida

[1d4]=1

Minoru, the gods have chosen you today. All of you, plan well, execute well, achieve the objective and successfully and safely return.

I realize that you're still finalizing characters, but I thought knowing initially what to expect might help with that.
You'll need to decide on your route to Kofu. The river way is 17 miles, over the mountain is 10 miles, but rougher terrain. And if you want, you can discuss what roles your PCs will take in the mission, and generally how you want to do it. The Rooster isn't exactly the captain of the team. He's the tie-breaker when the team can't decide what's next, and as was said, he's responsible for calling off hopeless missons.
Please feel free to ask GM questions about what to expect of the villa's layout, interior, lighting, inhabitants, etc. Bushido's Nippon has some general Japanese culture expectations, so your PC's would have that information.

Minoru is the Rooster, perhaps the kami ensured such wisdom, she thinks to herself. She likes and respects Minoru - he is intelligent, and a leader. The ancestors bless him and that says what she needs to know. I am the Yin to his Yang, she thinks ruefully.

She considers her companions, having trained together in nakadan teams, all of them honored for being chosen. Minoru also suits for a Boar or Rabbit. Fuma perhaps as the Ox, the Dog, a Monkey... His is strong, his bow is an asset from the rooftops. Jinsei is deadly - a Tiger, Horse, or Snake, though hopefully none of those will be needed. Of course, I am the Dragon. A Mouse. A Rabbit. All the smallest of roles.

She listened keenly... always before, the others were chosen before her... even among the Eta there are Eta. There is a reason it is now, and her ear took note. A servant's death by suicide, the potential for a dragon to be needed.

Kaida sits perfectly still, her eyes lowered, as they are left to deliberate a plan. She is visibly self-conscious, even among just peers. She waits to speak last.

Jemmus - we're going to definitely need the expectations for layout and such. If you can provide that base intel proactively, I'm sure it will help. I would say we could get this later (after we do the travel scenes) but it may influence what we buy/prepare from the clan?

What's the expected travel time along either route? We should all agree to baseline provisions for there and back and each buy them.

Fuma

Fuma ponders the mission. He prefers to think of one thing at a time and how it might change a latter course of action. First the path there, then the scouting, the act itself, and the getaway. Much to consider.

he remains quite for now.

This revised post with an additional map in the Campaign Setting thread has information on the two routes to Kofu. https://www.unseenservant.us/forum/view ... 12#p652512 Basically, the mountain route is 3.4 ri of Mountainous terrain and 1 ri of Major Road terrain upon entering Kofu. The river route is 5.8 ri of Minor Road terrain and the same 1 ri of Major Road terrain. But each route of course has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of possible encounters.
A character travels a number ri per day equal to his Base Movement Allowance (BMA).

Terrain and road conditions modify this rate of movement as follows:
Travelling on major road: +100% to effective BMA
On minor road: +50% to effective BMA
In Clear Terrain: No effect on BMA
(0-1000‘ above sea level)
In Rough Terrain (1000-2000’ above sea level): -25% to effective BMA
In Mountainous Terrain (over 2000 above sea level): -50% to effective BMA
Heavy snow on ground: -25% to effective BMA

I'm working on a description of the grounds and interiors of Nippon's manions/villas. The PCs know how those are generally laid out. The PCs know that this specific one has two open-air galleries outside the main building.

Minoru - BMA 6
Fuma - BMA 7
Jinsei - BMA 8
Kaida - BMA 5

So, slowest is BMA 5.

Mountain Route:
-50% penalty for mountainous terrain means 2.5 ri the first day, leaving .9 ri for the second day (64% of day remaining). The last ri is major road for 100% increase - 10 ri per day for 1 ri takes only 10% of a day. We arrive before noon on day #2.

Valley Route:
+50% bonus for minor roads is 7.5 ri for the first day. The route is only 5.8 ri, leaving 22% of the day. The last ri still takes the same 10%. So, we arrive with 12% of the first day remaining.

...the only advantage of the longer, harder, mountain route is that it doesn't oblige us to sell goods in the market to keep our cover. Otherwise, we could take the valley route, check in at an inn for dinner, and sell the goods the next day. We could pull the job the first night or we could scout the first night and pull the job the second night. Travel home on the third morning and again be home before nightfall.

Another advantage of the mountain route is you're much less likely to be observed by or encounter humans. A few peasants and jizamurai ((independent samurai landowners) live along the river. They're likely to notice anyone traveling in this isolated place. You'd need the develop deep cover identities and consistent patterns of behavior that would make sense over time.

On the other hand, you know that dangerous creatures inhabit the mountains along the mountain route. (There would be rolls on the non-human encounters tables).

It seems to me the mountain route is the better route to head back after completion of the mission.

But it sounds like we need to be consistent with our route. If we only head one direction in the valley, those who live there are going to start noticing.

Do our clan elders have any advice for us on this subject?

But I suspect over time we are going to be regularly making the trip between Kofu and the hideout.

The ninjas' main trainer Kawaishi-sensei says, As with many things in life, there is no way that is clearly better than the other. But I will remind you that there are times when the mountain route will be all but impassable due to snow, weather, or dangerous creatures. This means that today you have the choice of two routes. Other times only the Mountain Fisherman route will be available. So that you will inevitably have to develop convincing hensu-jutsu roles for traveling it.

Deciding on your route together is your first chance to develop nto a strong, effective nakama team.

The young ninja note that the elders did not offer to let them take one of the village's three flat-bottomed fishing boats. Those allow a rapid trip down the river to Kofu. The trip back against the current is slower and harder, but it is still probably quicker and easier than walking either route. But this option was notably not mentioned.

Does anyone besides Minoru have Hensu-jutsu? Well, all the Ninja have at least BCS 1 which allows one disguise from the list of 5.

Minoru has Wandering Priest, Traveling Entertainer, and Merchant disguises (the other two disguises are Farmer and Masseur).

Your Hensu-jutsu is 20, for a base BCS of 4 + 1 for level (we need to add the level in...). With a BCS of 5, you get to choose two disguises.

Sakai has BCS 6 (again, need to add level...) so two disguises.

Kaida has no Hensu-jutsu...

Marrulus, can you fix the bonus skills for the other PCs? All the Ninja Bugei and Arts are bonus skills.

Hensu-jutsu is better than the acting skill. NPCs have to make a Wit ST to even suspect the disguise. If they make that, the ninja roll on his BCS.

Undisguised Kaida would appear as an eta shugenja.
Which isn't an illegal profession like ninja is.

Sorry I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t aware until now about this thread, but now I’m subscribed.

Sakai Jinsei bowed to his elders, honored to be given a first mission to prove his and the nakama team’s worth.

Studying the land and villa maps, Jinsei said: “I favor the mountain route. Less complications.”

Jinsei felt this true, but also realized his Hensu-Jutsu skills were not the strongest. The time would arrive when he would be tested on such skills, but he preferred it not be on his first mission. Better to trust his martial skills.

“I would advise we observe the villa for a day, or as necessary, to determine guards, traffic, and patterns.”

“Is it possible to create a protective box for the teacup, strong without and cushioned within, to protect the cup from jostling or blows that could happen in the worst case?”

“Also, could we create a duplicate teacup, that we switch, to delay discovery of the theft and possibly ease our escape?”

Fuma

"Both excellent ideas Jinsei. Do we have a good enough description of the tea cup to make a forgery? I am not opposed to the mountain route for both there and back again, it does seem to offer less complications."

For names I am not sure if Fuma would use the whole name, first or last when talking to another member of the team.
