Yes, waiting until night was the plan. We left the shrine to go somewhere, the marketplace I assume, to wait. We originally were going to watch the estate for multiple days. I’m not sure that will give us any more intelligence. But we could still do that I suppose. Or Jinsei could go fishing all day The shrine seems like a good rendezvous point.

Re: Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel
The mountains fisherman and seller of fragrant salted, dried and smoked fish carcasses presents his registrar's office certificate from yesterday morning. The lower rank samurai gives it a cursory view. Don't forget to get this stamped again within the hour, mountain man. He waves Jinsei on.
[1d20]=20[1d20]=3[1d20]=6[1d20]=4[1d20]=20[1d20]=17[1d20]=5 Some pretty good rolls, but... bushi.
Contemplative and equanimous priest Kaida approaches and presents her registrar's document. The foot samurai turns to speak to the mounted one. He bows. Excuse me, Guncho-san. New Year's Eve is coming in four days, desu neh...? The mounted samurai samurai looks down and says, New Year's Eve? What are you getting at, Toyama-san? The sentries' schedules? Ah. They will organized by rank and seniority, of course. The senior bushi who have waited will have preference for requesting schedules for New Years Eve and New Years Day. I'm afraid members of the guntai more senior than you will take the favored New Years Eve and Day shifts.
The ashigaru eavesdrop on that, and murmur a speculative discussion among themselves. A teenaged ashigaru hands Kaida's registration document to her after a brief routine glance and turns his attention toward listening in.

After they are clear of the stations, Kaida comments discretely, "If tonight is again spoiled, we can perhaps seek the alternative of New Years. The guards will be inexperienced in the streets and the merchant's wife will hire helpers for the dinner that we might gain access."

Re: Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel
Fuma's hensu-jutsu BCS is 4 plus his level, so 5. The roll of 13 gives an effect number of 13-5=8. The ashigaru needs to roll under that to detect the disguise.
[1d20]=10
The ashigaru seemingly decides that the mountain fisherman is just a mountain fisherman. Fuma passes through the checkpoint and crosses the street. The registrar's office is only a few yards north.
Minoru? Doing hensu-jutsu as well? Or something else?

Re: Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel
A roll of 13 vs a BCS of 5 fails, doesn't it? Or are you calculating that as -8 Effect and adding it as a bonus to the Bushi's perception?
Re: Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel
Yes, the hensu-jutsu roll failed.
But then, the suspecting char has to roll under the effect number of fail to actually detect the disguise. Hensu-jutsu is more powerful than I thought.

Just needed to know if Minoru follows suit and also uses hensu-jutsu.

The lower rank samurai notes the young ashigaru's interest in the second mountain fisherman. He stops his inquiries about the upcoming New Year's holiday and closely observes the the next person coming through the intersection. A priest. But a very young one, and one who looks a little lean and supple for a praying, vegetarian, soft-living temple man.
Now we need a hensu-jutsu roll. (It was the 1 that succeeded on Detection of Hidden Things (Wit), of course).

Minoru easily passes. Note that his pious layman is Shinto, not buddhist, so actually he probably can pretty easily look the part of a Shinto traveling priest (was my original idea) or at least a priest (assistant maybe) coming into the big city to purchase specialty items for the shrine or the like (I'm not sure what all culturally makes sense, but that's the general idea of the disguise).
Re: Scroll 1 - The Master Craftsman's Tea Vessel
Minoru recalls his hensu-jutsu lessons and rehearsals and performs his role as if he were safe back in the dojo, and not surrounded by yari and dai-kyu. The samurai nods to the ashigaru and the Shinto priest is allowed to pass through the intersection. The registrar's office is the first building to the east, with the Koshu-Kaido highway/street at its front and Kofu Castle's moat and high stone platform at its back.
The fishermen and priest have to wait in the office while a merchant and his assistants are questioned by a Takeda samurai official.
Where are you coming from?
The merchant and assistants bow, then the merchant replies, Negano city in Shinano province, yakucho-sama, the merchant replies.
Where are you going?
This is my destination, yakucho-sama. I'll sell my goods here and buy the goods of the honorable Takeda clan's Kai province to sell in Shinano.
Your load was of course searched at the first checkpoint into the city. But tell me, what are you selling?
Fine cherry wood, smelted iron rods, and late winter Shinano mikan tangerines.
Iron rods? You know about the prohibition against moving weapons out of Kai province, don't you?
Yes, yakucho-sama. Out of caution, I asked the allies of the honorable Takeda clan, the Ogasawara of Shinano, for a certificate to bring the iron to the capital city of the Takeda. He presents a stamped certificate document. The official reads it and grunts.
That was wise, merchant. He turns to a middle rank samurai clerk. Issue them passes, inspect their porters, and if warranted, issue them passes as well. He turns to go, but pauses and turns back. Do the trade with the Taira, merchant?
The merchant hesitates. Not with the corrupt and degenerate Taira, yakucho-sama. But with old trading partner merchants in Taira land.
The Takeda smiles. In peacetime it would be your head for speaking of samurai and the grandsons of Emperors in that way, merchant. But you are correct in your assessment the clans of the Taira. Cut your ties with those merchants, merchant. You may buy goods from the Taira lands, but you may only sells goods in the lands of the Takeda and other Minamoto clans. Under penaltly of being barred from Kofu city and the entire province of Kai.
The merchant and assistants bow a crisp bow. Hai! I understand, yakucho-sama. They receive their passes and depart the office with the samurai for the porters' inspection.
A middle rank samurai clerk looks at the fishermen and priests. He beckons them forward, priests first. He looks their passes over, then their persons over. Don't forget that you must leave the city by the Hour of the Dog tonight. Or report here again tomorrow at the Hour of the Dragon. If you stay in the city for third night, you must report with a certification of overnight stay from an authorized inn, temple, shrine, dojo, or teahouse. If you stay in private home, you must present a certification stamped by a checkpoint captain. He stamps the four shinobi's passes.

Hour of the Dragon - 7 AM to 9 AM
Minoru's role of buying items in the city for the Shinto shrine fits well into the gameworld.

It's the first half-- the "top"-- of the Hour of the Dog. The early morning sky at the end of the month of Shiwasu is overcast, and the rich, dark valley loam soils streets of Kofu are mud with standing puddles from yesterday's downpour and the night's rain. The branches and twigs of the maple, gingko, plum, apple, pear, and cherry trees between the commercial buildings siding the Kaisho-Kaido are covered with bright young green leaves. The Moon, with its outline of a hare standing and pounding rice in a pestle into New Year's mochi rice cakes, will rise at almost half tonight. And at a fine straight line Half Moon tomorrow. And in five days, Winter will turn to Spring and the new year will begin. It's the beginning of the Hour of the Dog.

Jinei ambled along toward the marketplace, keeping in the vicinity of his fellow disguised ninjas. When they reached a spot that was clear of observers, he paused and showed them some dried fish while whispering: “We can loiter or occupy ourselves until evening, then try again tonight. Thoughts?”
