Episode 1 - Ravenglass Market

#1 Post by SilverBen »

Location: Port City of Ravenglass, Market District
SilverBen wrote: Wed Mar 01, 2023 6:19 am

Date and Time: Morning, between dawn and 10am. Day 1
Goal: Defend the boy from his attacker

Hundreds of tiny, multicolored flags flutter in the constant wind while tied to shops along the main street that leads the Docks and Warehouse district. Crowds of people and merchants flood this area, obscuring vision at eye level for humans. Overhead, bright clouds sail across the sky in the sunlight. Among the crowd are several young residents of Ravenglass,
  • Thorily Emersat, a female human magic-user
  • Nesta Silvatone, a male elf
  • Vatn, a male cleric of Njord, with his large dog Noden
  • Mudlark Oceansea, a female human thief
  • Tove Ulfhjarte, a female human warrior
  • awaiting a character sheet from redwarrior
A burst of voices rises in outrage as the meandering crowd is disrupted until a young human boy emerges into the open space. Close behind him in pursuit is another older human with a look of angry determination on his face. The apparent chase ends with the young boy stumbling to the ground, where the older pursuer pounces, apprehends, and aggressively raises his quarry from a painful fall.

The older man begins a vicious beating of the young boy with his free hand, striking any available opening he can with gnashing teeth. The younger boy is unable to free himself from the the older man's grip or protect himself from the single-handed blows.

Vatn

Vatn steps in and separates the man and boy by force. Keeping hold of each by one hand.

"Easy there, no need to kill the boy. What did he do wrong exactly?"

Vatn can successfully separate them on 1d20 > 8. Roll 1d20 twice, once for the victim and once for the attacker.

As Vatn manages to separate the attacker, the boy escapes and darts away into the crowd. Noden dutifully follows his master's lead and gives a sharp round of barks before biting the attacker's leg.

The attacker now becomes the victim, yelping in pain as Vatn steadies him and the large dog takes the man to the floor. Clothing tears under the force and he pleads for mercy.

The boy is gone, leaving the attacker subdued on the floor where the boy had once laid.

Mudlark
Mudlark saunters over. Not so fun when it's you getting pummeled, is it? She doesn't take any action, just laughs.

Thorily steps out of the crowd into the open space that's been created by people keeping "safe distance" between themselves and the fighers. She takes a big bite out of an apple and tries to peer through the crowd, seemingly not that interested in who's beating who.

"Hey, where did that boy go?"

Tove

Tove watches the commotion but makes no move to interfere. When the boy runs, she watches the direction and follows him with her eyes until he is gone. She made a note of his face so should she see him again she would know to keep a watchful eye on her coin purse should he prove to be a rogue. Then she turns her eye to the stranger who stepped in. He had the look of someone from her homelands, but that didn't necessarily mean he would be a kinsman. She listened, curious at the captive man's response to his question.

She glances to the young woman who is laughing at the prone man, agreeing with her sentiment though not voicing that opinion. After the others ask, she says, "I saw the direction he ran."

@Rex, please make a 2d6 reaction roll for the attacker. No modifiers for this first round.
On a low roll, 2d6 = 2, 3, 4, or 5 the attacker is angry and attacks Vatn with at least one hand strike next round, he doesn't recognize him as a cleric or he's too angry. Or the attacker changes his target of attacks to Noden.
On a high roll, 2d6 = 12, 11, 10, or 9 the attacker recognizes Vatn as a cleric and ceases his attacks. He becomes respectful and apologetic next round.
On an average roll, 2d6 = 6, 7, 8 he is undecided. Take one action for Vatn next round and reroll his reaction with a modifier, based on your action.

@Darithe The attacker replies back to Tove angrily in a volume loud enough to call through the gathering crowds, "let the thief go - i want what he stole returned to me!

Vatn

Reaction roll [2d6]=8

"Try and calm yourself down, I am trying to help you."

2nd Reaction roll [2d6+1]=7+1=8
I included Vatn's reaction modifier this time, easy enough to subtract out if it isn't useful.

After the sudden explosion of action, Nesta tries to take in the bigger picture, joining neither side until some truth can be revealed.

If possible, he darts into the crowd in hot pursuit of the fleeing boy, doing what he can to keep one eye on the suspect.

If he cannot seem to keep up with his quarry, he attempts to find an area he can climb up onto to get a better vantage of the fleeing boys route.

Tove

Tove frowns at the man's angry words, "What exactly did he steal from you?" He seemed to be pointing his anger at the wrong people and she doesn't appreciate that.

Thrainel looks on in interest. For such a beating, the child must surely have committed a great offense. he says neutrally.

Mudlark
Nar, he's just one o' those guys what like beating children, and anyone weaker than him. Mudlark scans the gathering crowd, weighing her chances of picking a few pockets while this diversion is going on. She holds her place for now.

Tove last saw the boy running south west through the crowds, towards the Slum District of Ravenglass.

Tove can easily recall the boy was fair skinned, with dark hair jutting out at the neck from under a wide brimmed hat. His hat was a common kind of garment among fishermen, tied with straps designed to resist the gusts of winds at sea. He disappeared into the crowds grasping a backpack tightly as he fled.

The man eyes Thraniel with contempt as he rises and distances himself from the barking Noden.

He leans to his leg, wipes the blood dripping from his flesh wounds with his free hand, and winces ordering, "Release me and out of my way now, or I will suspect you are an accomplice!" He neither recognizes Vatn's holy symbol nor Vatn's trappings as a cleric in his current heightened state.

Thorily casually drops what remains of her apple onto the muddy market floor and pushes it down the dirt with her sandal.

"Oh, the boy's darting for the slums for sure. I mean, not that I would know. Shall we go looking for him? I'm sure this gentleman will pay us a nice reward for fetching his bag, wouldn't you now sir?"

If anyone sets off in the direction the boy ran Thorily is interested in joining in.

Mudlark
Mudlark's attention is caught by the man's statement. Instruments? What sort, sai? Musical? Medical? Alchemic? She starts thinking about 'fences' who might buy such things.

Thrainel nods his agreement to Mudlark's comment about beating the weaker, thinking to himself that it is never the truly strong who feel the need to prove themselves like that. But he keeps that thought to himself. He scans the area where the altercation took place, looking for a discarded backpack.

not "searching", just looking - did we notice if the kid had a backpack as he was fleeing, either time?
