Campaign Setting: Our story begins in the port city of Ravenglass, covering approximately 9 square miles of land and roughly square in shape on a shallow bay 3 square miles in area. Ravenglass is comfortably situated on a tidal estuary, as the alternating advance and retreat of seawater rises and falls along the narrow, inhabited coastline. Farther inland, a marshy landscape dominated by herbaceous rather than woody plant species sprawl in each direction.
Geographic Features: Mudflats are revealed beneath the restless waves when the tide flows out. These potentially dangerous features both protect and isolate the small walled city, and compel waterborne travelers to follow the deeper channels of water towards the Docks District of Ravenglass or risk running aground in the sandy silt. At high tide, Ravenglass Bay is a full, coastal body of brackish water without limitations to access the one major freshwater river and many streams flowing into it.
Population: The population and density of Ravenglass varies by district. It has grown from a nestling outpost into a budding city over the past 20 years until recently establishing itself as a promising source of opportunity. It has reached a respectable size for its age, 60-70 years old, which was long enough to see a handful of generations of inhabitants live and die there.
Ruling Government: Ravenglass is governed by a council of several wealthy merchants, who hold the reigns of power and form an uneasy alliance. This has deteriorated from being staunch allies under the duress of adversity and obligation to cooperate. Although veterans are often retained to enforce laws at the whim of their employers and serve as personal guard details, there is no formal magistrate or court system. Many residents are deeply superstitious and adhere to religious guidelines for moral, ethical, and legal codes.
Active Factions - Many religious faiths and shrines are found within the walls of Ravenglass, including Clerics of Njord. Other religious factions to be developed more later
- Merchants & Guilds drive the economic welfare ad lifeblood of the port city
- Criminals such as smugglers and pirates are common among humans and humanoids
- Merfolk and other aquatic species are indigenous and sometimes hostile to humans and humanoids
Economy: The governing body holds economic growth as the primary goal. A growing fishing and shellfish industry, as well as a significant trade route, has recently been established as the primary economic resources to it residents of Ravenglass. Its connection to the open sea is its greatest asset, where reclusive merfolk and other intelligent aquatic species can be uncommonly found.
