CHAPTER 12e: Out of Motter's Realm

#1 Post by Norjax »

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 366D/81 (Mid Day)

The foreboding doom of the fortress took its toll, and you gathered the residuals from exploration and left the tower behind. The door with the handwheel led to a circular tunnel containing dying, mutant beasts of burden. They were harnessed to a metal ceiling rail, forcing them to pull giant magnets through the tunnel and past conductive rings to generate an electric current.

Found in the structure:

The silver liquid is a type of preservative for the mutilated bodies. It will act as a topical healing compound (1d4 hp per 12oz. application). You may take as much as you can prove able to carry.

The waxy potato-sized pellets are a trade curio since the technology to make use of them is beyond your abilities (ultrasonic agitation to make it pliable).

Most of the controls in the structure were “hard holograms” and only usable when power is on, so no “trinkets” were recovered.

You trekked north towards an area explored (by some) during a previous expedition. What initially appeared to be a weather disturbance was revealed to be activity by six or so entities sweeping the desert waste as if looking for something. The six-feet-long, gourd-shaped, smart metal constructs hover a few feet above the ground while their many undulating, segmented tentacles whip up a dust cloud as they pass back and forth over the ground.

Their rapid progression is moving towards you with methodic certainty!

Denslow prepares a fruit for when they get close enough.
Think they can be reasoned with?

Max says, if they are looking for something other than meat to eat, maybe we can help them. But let’s get out of their way if we can.

Anton looks for cover or concealment. His plasma torch emits a high pitched whirr as he activates stand-by power in case he has to use the device for defense.

Podo also tries to hide.

The opportunity to avoid the constructs has passed (determined by a die roll). They will spot you within a few minutes unless you can dig a hole, teleport away, camouflage yourselves, etc. Being a thousand yards away, there is time to prepare a defense or initiate offensive action.

It is possible to find individual concealment (Luck Check using current score) but that will result in isolation from a communal defense.

Saiph modifes his roll by -2 and Podo modifies his roll by +3. You must roll under your current Luck

Silvestri

"We could form a defensive line. I wonder if we could use the fence artefact to protect our flanks?"

Kurot tries to judge the constructs' speed. He doesn't necessarily want to run away, but he does wonder if it's possible.

Urlando
"I don't know what this fence is, but if we're gonna put it up, let's do it now. Otherwise I say we break up and all hide. If they find one of us, maybe the rest can surprise counterattack if we are hidden." Urlando has a rat's natural dislike of being caught out in the open.

Denslow will hold his fruit high, thinking that he can bombard the creatures if the team needs time to get the fence up.

If the creatures are just on a heading that intersects us and not headed towards us maybe we can use the fence in "V" shape to divert them to each side of us? <<< "A">>>

Anton and Podo will assist since cover seems to require more Luck.

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 366D/81 (Mid Day)

Kurot analyses the speed of the smart metal entities and determines that he can outpace the constructs if their current speed is the maximum obtainable. He also calculates the odds that these are most likely low AI units regulated to mundane and/or repetitive tasks.

Urlando’s anxiety forces him to consider a polymorph into his primeval form. Easier to hide as a rat than a two-headed rat man!

Silvestri, Max, Anton and Podo set the Barrier Poles into position and activate the energy field. (Usage Dice rolled; no reduction) A ghostly band of white energy flows between each pair of poles. A 20ft defensive chevron (10ft ea. pair) now protects your front and each flank.

Denslow opens his branches to their maximum span and prepares a fruit barrage from defensive cover.

Saiph muddles about, trying to determine a course of action.

The group is almost upon you; they are 50 yards away.

Silvestri moves to the apex of the chevron, but stands back to give a little space between him and the protective field and gets ready to summon his magnetic power if it looks like the constructs are going to break through the barrier.

Saiph

With the protective barrier set up, Saiph finally decides on a course of action.

He positions himself roughly central in the chevron and watches the metal creatures, ready to use his disruptive power if the creatures break through.

Urlando
Urlando's whiskers tremble at the approach of the oversized metal bugs. He contemplates assuming rat form and hiding until they pass by, but he decides to stay with the group and take shelter in the chevron. Ultimately, he reasons that cowardice is looked upon less favorably by other species than it is by rats.
"Any clue about what they're looking for?" he asks? "If we know, maybe we can toss something their way as a diversion."

OOC: Does Urlando know anything about the relative effectiveness of the herdivoc whips compared to his morningstar?

Max says, I've no idea what they're looking for. But I can ask!

When the things get close enough, Max yells greetings.

Kurot likewise stays behind the protective barrier, hoping that combat won't be necessary.
