Bankei the Monk Gravedigger

Bankei Sheet

Discussion on Buddhist magic here.
Discussion on Ghosts here.

He has a long-eared donkey named Yagi.

Translations:
Yagi means goat. It is also slang for dingbat, meathead, cretin, numbskull. He travels with a donkey named goat, giving hints to its personality.

Originally Bankei was chosen as the translation of "Ten Thousand Blessings." Bankei is also translated as "Restoration." (I like leaning into that better.) Or, in longer form, "It means that after you fail, you succeed to clear up your failure." This is his Buddhist name, which a monk chooses for themselves in meditation for their new life as a monk, turning aside from their old life. Bankei was an Eta, an untouchable whose role was the handling and cremation of bodies. He remains crude and mannerless, having not had any cultured upbringing, but he expresses no remorse for who he was born as... it is unclear to others what his 'Restoration' is from. (i.e. room to evolve it in play.)

Alright, now we know Bankei and Yagi... :) Different than I'd pictured, I thought Bankei was younger, taller, and had more hair. Yagi looks about as expected. Maybe a little more personal character to deal with. Oh crap.

Bankei evolved as a result of this post, particularly the spoiler discussion. As a wandering ascetic he is in his Sannyasin phase and that is more interesting if he is older. (But he is probably younger than he SHOULD be... thus his rueful commentary on giving up women and money.) As a generic young eta cleric he was... too generic. I have a better handle on how to personify him now. :)

...plus, "I- I- I- want the kniiiiiife.... pleaaaaase....."

Just seeing this post, somehow I wasn't subscribed. "I want the knife" made me laugh. Bankei is an interesting character.
