Re: Return to the Catacombs

#741 Post by Crig »

Watching the members of his party be overtaken by these wretched smelling monster, Dorath knows he needs to act drastically, even if the outcome is uncertain.

In one smooth move he drops his sling and replace it with the mysterious wand which he had found earlier. He points the wand directly at the largest fish limbering through the doorway and shouts the words etched into the wand, “Hrána Mornalme!!.

Re: Return to the Catacombs

#742 Post by Ithril »

Please see the main chat. I need to make something a bit more succinct about how I adjudicate battles.

Initiative roll for Pebble [1d10]=6+5=11

initiative for dead fish in numerical order (1,2,67) [_3d10]=(1+5+9) + 3 = 4,8,12

dead fish attacks (2 each) in numerical order (1,2,67) [_6d20]=(8+11+1+2+3+18)7,10 1,1 2,17

monster damage to Pebble & Harker (1d4 ea) [_2d4]=(4+4)=8

Initiative roll for Igber [1d10]=1+6=7

Igber wisely backs away and climbs onto the sundial for a better perspective on the battle, hoping the 'high ground' will give him an advantage to choosing his targets. Unfortunately the added height and the stench makes him momentarily light headed, and his first attack is wild.

Dorath decides on a desperate tactic, and draws the wand out, dropping the other weapons that seem useless against such overwhelming foes. Pointing it well above his other companions to the most formidable target, he commands "Hrána Mornalme!!"
A gray light flashes from the wand, overcoming the warm glow of Harker's lantern, making everything look gray for an instant.
Saving throw for fish-zombie-thing (15+ is a save.)[1d20]=8 FAIL
Initiative roll for Pebble [1d10]=6+5=11

Conweena grasped by the heartless dead feels the cold of it's touch once again engulf her arm. The painful numbing cold is finally more than she can withstand, and she collapses with a violent seizure, falling lifelessly to the ground. Pebble and Traesta rush towards her position to confront the beasts.

Charging to where Conweena fell, Pebble finds he too cannot bear the stench which overwhelms his senses. The irresistable nausea hits him, and his defenses waver. The fish zomby thing ignores the fallen sheildmaiden at it's feet, more interested in the struggling prey before it.

Initiative roll for Pebble [1d10]=6+5=11

Harker sees two of his companions fall under the profane mockery of life, and in a desperate attempt to save his companions, he calls holy judgement down upon them. But his petition fails, echoing impotently on the stone walls amidst the clash of battle. He doesn't await the result however, striking withhis blade as he does so. The weapon finally finshes the hewing stroke it had began a moment before, and the creature falls to the ground, still struggling dumbly to claw at the life that stands over it.

Edit to add: I made an error in designating rolls while I was rolling initiative and attacks. The initiative & attacks listed as creature #6 should rightly have been attributed to #7. However because of INITIATIVE, Harkers strikes fall before #7's attack would. This is why initiative is vital.
Because (my roll for) Harkers initiative beat the roll for his opponent, Harkers strike will negate the attacks that would have hit him.
Initiative is important, even VITAL in some cases. Please try to remember to roll it during combat.
Thank you. We now return to our regularly scheduled carnage.

As Lannas struggles under the dead thing that has overwhelmed him, he frustrates the things efforts, and it cannot effectively do anything else. (one critical fail, and another near critical fail !?) Lannas kicks the crature's legs, and keeps it struggling, though he cannot bring his blade to bear a more effective attack.
Lannas initiative and attack (penalized for being prone) rolls [1d10]=4+5=9, [1d20-2]=5-2=3

Creature2:
INIT 8
ATTACK 1/1 critical fail

Pebble continues the melee, but his attacks are useless. The dead tailless thing before him however, grabs Pebble's arm, twisting it the wrong way with an irresistable strength, and Pebble feels the sinews of his arm stretched beyond their strength. He screams in pain, as much for the cold that invades his limb as he does from the ice that is invading his very soul. Unfortunately for the brave young warrior, the terror is too much for him, and he collapses as Conweena did before him.
creature1:
INIT 4
ATTACK Pebbble (7/10)hit

Traesta struggles with the creature that overpowered Lannas. The overwhelming stench of rotting fish isn't bearable, and the nausea wells up in her throat. She lines up a strike on the creature, and by some serendipitous favor, her weapon finds the creatures most vulnerable point. Though she expected to strike a solid form, her weapon instead finds the creatures already cloven head. Rotted brain matter, worms and black ichor spray as her mace invades the open skull of her target, even as it struggles with Lannas under it.
(-2 to all attack rolls, but a nat20 still counts as critical.)
bonus re-roll for Traesta [1d6+1]=6+1=7

creature6:7:
INIT 12
ATTACK 2/17 hit

Harker roaring an incoherent war-cry of outrage ~ uses his shield {held on right arm} to shoulder into creature 6# face to shove space turning to his left as he pushes his way to the space behind creature 1# passing behind creature 2# and spinning around to swing his silvered bastard sword {wielded in left hand} at the both of them in turn as he bulls his way into position...

As he shoves his way into ... the worse tactical position so he is surrounded by ALL the creatures he swings his Silvered Bastard Sword twice at the creature's Rear flanks ~ once at Creature 2# striking at the ruin of its head already smashed once by Treasta's mace and his second swing at the jagged wound of hanging organs from the abdomen of Creature 1#... in a attempt to draw all their attacks to him as they seem more interested in attacking the threatening living than slaying the reeling on the floor ~ for now.

It can be recalled Harker promised to die before any of his companions died... he will very soon accomplish this drawing the creature's attention...

Initiative [1d10]=7

Attack #1 w/Silvered Bastard Sword Attack at creature 2 [1d20+1]=18+1=19, Damage [1d8+3]=7+3=10

Attack #2 w/Silvered Bastard Sword Attack at creature 1 [1d20+1]=20+1=21, Damage [1d8+3]=2+3=5

His aim is true striking both creatures in a whirl as he spins, shoving creature 6# ~stalling it with his shield hopefully, as he pushes into the space central to the undead forces' advance and turns swinging his sword in a well directed aim ... perhaps just lucky cleaving pirouette.. striking Creature 2# and 1 in turn ending his movement and placing his back to the wall... next to creature 8#!! But now covering from his new position ALL his companions ~ Lannas, Coweena, Pebble and Treasta in his Paladin's 10'ft Aura of protection ~ at least as long as life remains in him...

A selfless and Very RECKLESS ... but perfectly executed graceful cleaving whirl of movement... perhaps his last...

Dorath is relieved that his wand did not melt any of his teammates. However, he is still not ready to risk fate’s finger’s meddling with his stone throws so he skillfully waves his fingers as he chants mystical words (magic missile) and a blast of pure magic screams forward and pummels fish #6.

Igber again tries the "Sling from a distance" attack - the larger target at the doorway seems best

He's not sure if he got a hit at all, but if he did, it was probably a really useless one as it was but a glancing blow

For anyone else entering melee combat, please roll an extra D20 as a save vs paralysis just in case you get hit during that round. Otherwise I will have to make the roll for you.

initiative for dead fish in numerical order (1,2,6) [_3d10]=(8+2+10) +3= 11/5/13
dead fish attacks (2 each) in numerical order (1,2,6) [_6d20]=(1+11+16+4+1+18)

Conweena and Pebble lay lifeless near the wall of the chamber as the others fight for their lives against the overpowering lifeless creatures driven to spread their undeath further.

The dead fish that has Traesta's mace buried in it's skull looks up at her with it's one gray dead eye, and lashes back at her strike. One arm claws helplessly at the handle of the weapon buried deeply in the crater of it's skull. The other arm rips at Traesta's forward leg, it's gray eye rolling in wide circles.

Damage to Traesta [1d4]=3

Traesta save vs paralysis (above 10 for success) [1d20]=4

Regaining his balance and composure, Igber looses another bullet, this time at the hulking fish-thing in the doorway right after the flash of gray fades. The creature hulking there doesn't seem to react, though Igber is certain the shot was true.

Dorath doesn't delay to investigate the affect of the wand, lowering the wand, he utters a mystical chant and uses his off-hand to weave symbols in the air to summon the magical energies. As his hand begins to glow with a faint blue mist, and his incantation is complete he makes a vulgar pointing gesture, and a faint blue spark shoots like a minuscule arrow from his finger towards the dead thing to Harker's left, just before Harker bashes at it's face with his shield.

Harker shoves his way between the four of the dead things, leaving himself completely vulnerable to the hulking figure filling the doorway as he contends instead with the other two creatures menacing Lannas and Traesta.

His great heavy blade falls upon the creature's neck as Traesta collapses in the creatures clutches.
edit to add:
The weapon hews the ruin of it's head from it's shoulders, and it falls full on Lannas as Traesta falls on it. It's arms and claws work aimlessly, clawing at the air as the power of it's unlife flows from it's neck in black streams.
somehow my copy/paste lost this part. Sorry for the oversight.

Without time to aid Traesta further, Harker strikes at the other creature hovering over the lifeless forms of Conweena and Pebble. He drives his weapon true, burying the whole of it's length in the creatures torso, severing most of the sinews holding the creature together.
Harker additional damage for nat 20 [1d8+3]=6+3=9

(Total damage 14)

Lannas, now buried under the weight of the twice-dead fish creature, and Traesta's cataleptic body struggles simply to breathe. He cannot struggle free yet, let alone attack.
For the record, I rolled initiative and attacks, but the dice have clearly dictated that he cannot do anything right now.
Lannas initiative and attack (penalized for being prone) rolls [1d10]=8+5=13, [1d20-2]=8-2=6

Harker is now cornered with his back to the wall, flanked on each side by the lifeless fishmen who seek blood chilled with terror. while defending against the one on his left, the tailless one on his right finally finds it's chance and grabs at the valiant hero. The icy pain runs through Harker's core as the creature finds blood. Still, the hulking creature in the doorway makes no further moves to join the blood-feast.
Damage to Harker [1d4]=2

Sunphoenix Please roll a save vs. Paralyzation:12; (1d20+2) success above 10.
It appears the dice favored your tactics.

This may be down to Dorath and Igber! You may have to get your hands dirty, Igber!

Having gotten the attention of the undead fiends Harker again shrugs off the cold terror of their menacing claws...

Paralysis Save [1d20+2]=10+2=12

Instead he hews into them... aiming his Silvered Bastard sword at the one most grievously wounded ~ Creature 1# striking at the abdomen wound of eviscerated entrails hoping it will finally cut the beast in half ending it's ability to fight!

Attack w/Silvered Bastard Sword Attack at creature 2 skull [1d20+1]=7+1=8, Damage [1d8+3]=3+3=6

Disappointed in the way the monster seemed to easily shrug off his magic missile, Dorath uses his wand once more, praying it has more charges left in.

‘Hrána Mornalme!’ echoes through the catacombs as Dorath points his wand towards #6.

Initiative rolls for Igber and Harker; in that order [_2d10]=3,10

As Harker contends with the thing in front of him, he feels the creature behind him grabbing him. The clawing hands pull at his cloak, his armor, his helm, and his hair. The passages once again echo Dorath, commanding the wand to function. A gray flash fills the chamber for a moment. Igber lets another stone fly, but he cannot control the missile accurately. Perhaps it was the gray flash, or perhaps his foot caught on some detail in the sundial he is standing on. Regardless the cause, his bullet strikes poor paralyzed Pebble, who cannot even react to the pain of the strike.

Saving throw for fish-zombie-thing #6 (15+ is a save.)[1d20]=14 FAIL

Igber critical fail 'who gets hit' & 'to hit' roll [1d6]=5,[1d20]=13

Igber critical fail damage to Pebble [1d4]=4

Like Pebble, Conweena and Traesta lay paralyzed on the cold stone floor, drenched in sweat and the viscera of their twice slain opponents, hoping to remain invisible to the unsated appetite for fresh, living blood. Visions of a black netherworld play in their half sight, while their minds contend with the power of the undead, and their bodies are beyond the reach of their will.(Good pun. I hope my answer was worthy.)

initiative for dead fish in numerical order (1,6) [_2d10]=(3+2

dead fish attacks (2 each) in numerical order (1,6) [_4d20]=19,4/7,15

Harker is unable to contend with the creature before him while he is distracted with worry from the one behind. It's strength, even though it is literally a shell of death, is still inexplicably great, and it desperately grabs Harker by the neck, drawing more blood.

Edit to add:
I overlooked damage to Harker, and also failed to keep track of his wounds. So I'll have to make serious changes to this post.
I apologize for the oversight.

Damage to Harker [1d4]=4

As Harker finally succumbs to his wounds, the corpse thing throws Harker's limp body to the ground ! He charges towards Dorath, and Lannas is unable to stop it.

I think this has gone on long enough, and there is little chance this last creature can do much more harm, so I'll simply illustrate the last moment of the battle.

As the dead fish thing marches towards Dorath, black goo bubbles from it's gills and slack-jawed mouth with a gurgling growl. Lannas chases behind it to land a finale strike against the creature, but before he reaches it, the right side of it's head explodes unexpectedly as Igber finally finds his mark, felling the creature with a last shot. It falls mere feet from Dorath, and the bodies finally resume the natural process of decay.

Lannas returns to Harker's side to staunch the life flowing from his wounds. QUICKLY, Find The Bottles We Took From The Wizards Chamber (referring to the pink and yellow potions). THEY WILL HEAL HIM!
Conweena has them in her pack, but she is incapacitated.)

The wound is superficial, but the cold and the pain strike unnaturally deep, and it is simply Harker's force of will that allows him to overcome it. He breaks the creature's grip before the numbing cold can steal his strength, but he cannot find a blow to end the unlife standing before him.

Lannas finally arises from the pile on the floor, and attempts to aid Harker, but his sword is tangled still in the bodies, and his attack is nullified. He swears instead at the dead thing, cursing in his strange foreign tongue.

The dead fish thing glares at Harker, and black goo bubbles from it's gills and slack-jawed mouth with a gurgling growl. Harker realizes he isn't being distracted by anything behind him, and without pausing to investigate why, decides instead to concentrate fully on the horror before him.

As Harker and Lannas together prepare a final strike against the creature before them, the right side of it's head explodes unexpectedly as Igber finally finds his mark, felling the creature with a last shot. It falls among the other corpses on the floor, and the bodies finally resume the natural process of decay.

The four able-bodied adventurers drag the fish corpses away, and give their companions aid. After about 10 minutes the last of the wounded find they can once again move freely. The chilling touch of the dead has left them, and they are no longer paralyzed. The hour is much later than you had planned. The fight with these undead horrors has delayed your retreat to the tower. You must hurry if you wish to reach the tower before sunset.

Without taking a moment to sigh in relief or revel in their victory, Dorath rushes to Conweena and rummages through her bag, searching for the wizard’s potions which could heal his fallen comrade. He grabs the colorful potions and hands them to Lannas.

“You fought bravely, friend. Don’t worry, you’ll pull through.”

Cure Light Wounds :[1d6+3]=5+3=8 (2 in round 1, 4 the next and 2 in the 3rd)

I'm sorry. I apologize for having to revise reality because of my oversight. Traesta is still out paralyzed for the time being, and cannot help Harker. However...

While Harker lay literally dying in Lanas' arms, Dorath rushes over to rummage through the pack Conweena has, and momentarily returns with one of the strange bottles. They lift Harker just enough to dump some of the liquid into his mouth, hoping it will either work without his having to actively drink it, or that somehow it will get to where it needs to be.

Fortunately, the potion works, and after a moment, Harker begins to sputter and cough. Encouraged, Dorath pours the rest of the bottle into his mouth. Harker's color returns, and his breathing becomes easier. Though Harker still lay limp in Lannas' arms, it appears he will be alright after all.

Dorath and Lannas try to help Harker [1d6+4]=6+4=10

The three able-bodied adventurers drag the fish corpses away, and give their companions aid. After about 10 minutes the last of the wounded find they can once again move freely. Harker, though disoriented is also awake now. The bleeding wounds are mostly closed, or well scabbed over. The chilling touch of the dead has left them all, and they are no longer paralyzed. However, the hour is much later than you had planned. The fight with these undead horrors has delayed your retreat to the tower. You must hurry if you wish to reach the tower before sunset.
