(9) Temple Of Helios

Temple of Helios

Aside from the immense Arena across the Bazaar, this massive stone edifice is easily the second largest building in Xambaala. Taking up an entire city block, three tiers of vast stone steps lead up to a set of huge bronze doors. Rigid marble columns flank the wide steps, supporting no structure, resembling thick stone fingers pointing to the heavens. A colossal bronze idol of the fire-bearded deity Helios stands atop the peak of the immense roof. His gaze is stern and terrifying, seemingly fixed on any who approach.

Under the statue, set within an open belfry, hangs a massive, verdigris covered bronze bell. This is the eventide bell, rung each day at 8:00PM to announce the conclusion of the slave castes work day, and more recently, to signify the curfew that encourages citizens and visitors to seek immediate shelter behind closed doors. The “Sounding of Eos”, also called the dawn bell, rings again promptly at 6:00AM. This toll signifies the beginning of the new day, light or darkness not withstanding in uncanny Hyperborea.
