(12) The Deep

#1 Post by OGRE MAGE »

The Deep

This abnormal looking building is a large, ramshackle yurt-like hut with no windows and a single entrance, barely more than a heavily oiled cloth tarp hung over an opening in the rotting wooden frame. There is a thin, pressed metal roof that covers the entire building, with molded strips which overhang its edge, funneling any morning dew or rare rainwater collected on the glistening metal down into several tanks and barrels that circle the outer walls.

These covered metal tanks and casks are stacked at varying heights which are connected by tubes or hoses that drip from one to another below it. The constant swishing and dripping of water gives off a strange calming music, giving one a natural sense of peace once approached. Unfortunately, the indomitable stench of salty brine and rotting fish filling the air assails the senses with precedence.

There is no sign or shingle outside indicating what this place might actually be, but the name *The Deep* in the common tongue is shakily written in red paint directly above the door flap. A thin coin slot is evident in the wall next to the door, along with a small sign that reads: Curiosity Museum Admission: 1gp/person

Kainaxarthos

He nods approvingly at the decor and price gouging. "Interesting place you've found, Ceana. And a new smell too! Low tide, I believe I'll call it." Kain winks at Ceana and pushes the flap aside to enter.

From inside the yurt, a tiny bell rings after each coin is slid into the slot.

As Kainaxarthos is about to throw the flap back to enter, a strange slurred gurgling voice sounds out from beyond.

"Yesshh, yesshh, yesshh. Shree ringsshh. Shree may ensher."

Ceana

"Smells worse than a boar three days dead!" the druid gasps, wrinkling her nose at the fish stench.
Hearing the weird voice from inside the yurt, Ceana places a hand upon the hilt of her falcata. She is the last to enter.

Entering the strange yurt, you find that the horrible smell outside is actually leaching out from inside the structure, where the air is so foul a normal human can barely breath. A macabre decoration of tentacles in every color, size, and shape imaginable dangle from the roof struts of the place, most of them dried out old stinking husks, but the ones closest to the door still seem somewhat fresh.

Beyond this oddity, the interior of the room looks much like the outside, with hose filled covered tanks, crocks, barrels and casks spread out in rows and lining most of the curved outer walls. One section of the place is partitioned off with a filthy tarp, indicating a possible living area that you couldn't possibly imagine the conditions of. A few tanks are made of glass, shewing many odd looking sea creatures wriggling around within.

One portion of the wall is filled with packed shelves stacked with curiosities you have never seen before, with many colorful jars and bottles looking a bit like something you might find in a deranged wizards lab.

The slow slurring voice is heard again, this time coming from a dark recess where you make out a shadowy humanoid figure lurking behind a row of tanks.

"Yess, pleassh ensher. Feash your eyssh on the miraclessh of the shhea."

Actshionssh?

Maxon
Maxon coughs and snuffles, trying to deal with the stench. He ducks under/around the dangling tentacles, moving deeper into the yurt. We're looking to buy some snakebite cure.

Ceana

To say she is appalled by the tentacled mess is an understatement. The look of revulsion is plain on the druid's face as she gawps at the specimens of the sea. "By the fates! What have we stumbled into?"

Kainaxarthos

He studiously avoids the tentacles dangling from the ceiling, thinking that it's not the first time he's had to think that. Kain nods slowly at the live displays, getting an appreciation for the proprietor.

"A follower of Kthulhu, maybe? Your collection is impressive. The Dreaming God would approve."

Kain bows slightly to the shadow but keeps his eyes up and hands ready.

The Deep

The bizarre gurgling voice continues from over the tops of the shelves. "Ahhh, yesshh. The Mighty Katshulshu approvessh of thish intshroductshion. You musht be one of themsh slavesh?"

The figure waddles out from the end of the lines of tank covered shelves, finally making himself seen to his visitors.

Maxon
Maxon takes a step back, his hand falling to the hilt of his scimitar. There- There are beautiful creatures throughout the world, but some of them are deadly. We're looking for a potion to cure poisoning by snakebite.

Kainaxarthos

He lowers his head slightly in greeting. "I am not indeed. Merely someone knowledgeable and curious. Antivenin? It was said that you might have some."

"I do admire your collection, though. Did you collect them yourself?"

The Deep

The strange looking fishman nods his huge head at the request for antivenom.

"Thatsh correct. The shea ish filled with beauty ash well ash dangersh."

"And yesh, theesh are all my babiesh. I'm glad to know another enthushiesht of majeshtic shea creatuersh."

"The Deep hash jusht what you sheek, friend."

He moves to the back of the yurt and digs around on a table for a moment, returning with a small vial of blue liquid.

"Thish will reduche the deadly effectsh of any poishonsh. Jusht pour it over the wound or drink it. Eashy peashy."

"Normally I chargsh 100 gold coinsh for shuch a treashure. But for a fellow lover of the shea, I will let it go for sheventy five."

Ceana spots movement through some of the clear tanks, but nothing she feels will be a threat to their negotiations.

Kainaxarthos

"Sounds about right. The church would require a sizable donation to neutralize poison if we went there. I mean, curing diseases, and removing blindness and poison are what pay the bills. That and the whole raise dead thing." He whispers back to Ceana. He looks at the skeptical faces illuminated by lights filtering through the tanks. "But I can see you were hoping for something else."

Kain turns to the piranaman and nods. "That may be a bit too rich for our situation, sir. Perhaps we could work out a trade of sorts? Surely there is something you need."

Maxon says nothing. He winces at the quoted price, but begins counting coins. He'll let the negotiations go on as he does.

The Deep

Ceana peers into another nearby tank, not liking what she sees in there either. The normally stoic Kelt is starting to feel a little creeped out.

The huge eyes of the fishy looking man dart towards Maxon and his coins while he responds to Kain's request. "Ha! Thish ish a shteal at that pricsh, and you knowsh it."

"Howeversh, there might be shomething you could offer to schweeten the deal, show to shpeak. You got any ambergrish?"

Kainaxarthos

"Ambergris? I don't have any right now, but I'd go looking for it in a place just like yours. If you're looking for it, it must be difficult to acquire. Do you have a source in mind?"

Kain smiles, deep in bargaining mode. "Perhaps we could get some for you, provided you see fit to provide the antivenom as a down payment. And you are able to give us the means to retrieve some."

He looks over at Ceana and recognizes that he needs to hurry this along. "How's this? You tell us how to get the ambergris, plus give us the antivenom, at a discount, and we will get you what you need. I suspect it can't be easy to go about town freely with all the prejudiced people around."
