Character Generation Discussions

I'll set up threads for each finalised character once they are more clearly defined.

This thread is for discussions during the development process

And for testing if you can each write comments to this forum!

PROCESS
  • Agree Character Genetics/Culture and associated notes and DMs
  • Initial Attribute rolls for each character agreed
    • I will generally allow an extra d6 cutting the lowest for 3 attributes
    • I'll also be using Sanity (SAN) based on 1d6+6 and luck (LCK) at 1d6+6. Some term events may decreasealter SAN pre-game.
  • Childhood to be agreed including birth world
    • If the birth world is near Million Subsector then we can discuss family in detail, otherwise just in general
    • Each character gets the skill Language(<Native>)+2 for whatever their <native> childhood language was
  • Term Resolution
    • Events/Mishaps in each term to be discussed - They'll be tailored to the region/local history
    • Retirement Rolls at end of each career agreed (n.b. Ships and Ship Shares will result in other benefits instead)
    • Aging Rolls at the end of each term!
  • Connections Finalisation
    • With three players, you will either (to be sorted between yourselves):-
      • each get a connection to the other two or
      • one has a connection to the other two, and the other two each have that connection and a connection to an NPC henchman
  • Package Skills Selection
    • Skill List: Distribute picking 1 at a time in turn until each character has 2.
      • Pilot(Any)+1
      • Engineer(Life Support)+1
      • Engineer(Jump)+1
      • Mechanic+1
      • Electronics(Any)+1
      • Gunner(Screens)+1
      • Leader+1 or Tactics(Any)+1
      • Vacc Suit+1
      • Athletics(Dex)+1
    • People and Things List: Distribute picking 1 at a time in turn until each character has 1
      • Contact(Dzarrgh Federate Navy)
      • Contact(Khouth Criminal Boss)
      • Contact(UFA Customs Official)
      • Advanced Probe Drone
      • Psi-Helmet
      • HUD/VR Contact lenses, Computer-5, Software up to Cr100,000
  • Initial Equipment Allocation and Purchase
    • Allocated Equipment
      • Ship Bag including uniforms, business and casual clothing, toiletries, towel, and general day-to-day items.
      • Computer/0 with translator software for Aekhu and your native language (or one other language if your native language is Aekhu)
    • New Purchases limited to TL-10
    • Second hand purchases of higher tech (usually looted) equipment possible during play
n.b. I won't be watching over your shoulder for rolls - make a character you like and feel for.

The hook is that you are being hired to recover a ship that the Dzarrgh Federate have mislaid.

But you are going to have to pull together a crew and guards, get there, get the vessel, fix it, get back.

The patron recognises that he hasn't the status and charisma to carry off such a coup. But needs to find someone who will deal fairly with him and get him rich as a result.

He recognises that he hasn't the influence to keep the ship, but has lined up a buyer at the UFA. Obviously he hasn't told you everything yet...

n.b. You can use Mongoose 1 or Mongoose 2 for character generation - but skills taken will be converted to the Mongoose 2 skill set.

And Flyer(Grav)+1+ gives you Pilot-0; Pilot(any)+1+ gives you Flyer-0 (House Rule)

And Trade() becomes Profession()
And Zero-G becomes Athletics (DEX)
and Prospecting becomes Profession(Belter)
And so on.

i tend toward skills/tech and psi characters

i usually play Vargr in Traveller, but i like the idea of Zhodani psi
Ursa seem interesting too - but not as high on the tech end??


if we all end up with Vargr - we could be a pack, or remnant of a pack

Sazqelimqar, part of the support personnel on a ship headed for a nearby consulate that was attacked by corsairs, is sold with the other survivors on Hesaurus to Faraway mining, where he escaped. Shortly after he joined the others.

I'm good with whatever...but its really up to your colleagues!

also Ursa stats would be:-
STR: 3D6+12, DEX: 1D6+1, END: 2D6+3, INT: 3d6 cut highest, TRN: 2D6, SOC: 2D6 (Max 11)
n.b. EDU = TRN/2 and may never attend college or university. And only 2 possible homeworlds: Shishkala (Corridor 1607) or Tamilaa (Corridor 2006)

Vargr get +1 DEX; -1 on STR and END. Several Vargr homeworlds in Corridor...Serk, Rrev Rigr or Gzorraeth are plausible and nearby - or Aga Sugek at a pinch

Zhodani (as you probably know) are complex - but this one would be a noble and something of a witch...and very out of place. I'd recommend ANTS as a homeworld. Everyone will be seeking to ransom you back to the consulate or hand you back
Your penultimate term must include a career ending Mishap: Kidnapped. Roll 8+ on Melee, Gun Combat or Stealth to avoid Injury. It must be a zhodani career that would plausibly get you to an embassy.
Your final term will be: Kidnap Victim. Training: one skill from Service Skill list at 0. Service Skill: Roll 1d6 for Deception or Science(Psychology) or Athletics(Any) or Art(Performance) or Melee(Unarmed) or Stealth. Event: Escaped. Gain a Contact and an Enemy. Roll 8+ on Deception to avoid rolling on the injury table.
You get Melee(Unarmed) as a rank-skill and may roll for promotion (END:5+) for a prison skill from Inmate, Personal or Service per page 54
Neither of the last two terms gets a term or promotion benefit, but both count for ageing.

Choice of Human Engineer, Aslan Engineer or Vargr Engineer

As an Aslan Engineer you would almost certainly have to be female and have to be an Outcast or Outlaw in at least your final term. (Or a Mercenary using Imperial Careers)

If Navy, being a UFA or Duchy of Atsah resident would fit well...depending on whether you want to use Vargr or Imperial Naval career tables.

Which is most useful, narratively?
The UFA Navy is a bit more stay-at-home than the Atsah Ducal Fleet. The question is are you a Vargr's Vargr or an Imperial Lapdog?
That decision will drive whether this is to be played on home turf or is it an away match?
If you are UFA, then your character's family will be available as contacts more than if you come from further away.

Both the UFA Navy and Ducal Fleet have been bumping heads with the Dzarrgh Federate for years so these will both be equally at odds with them.

FYI the Initial "_" missing - the 4 of 1d6 need to be viewed separately! [_4d6] is what you needed to get the system to roll.

And Wow - That was 5+6+5+6 or 6+6+5+5 or 6+5+5+6 etc. That's good rolling!

Given those rolls it doesn't make much odds

1) You are from a Major Clan
2) You are from one of the greatest clans in the Hierate (TRALYEAEAWI)
3) Your grandfather died gloriously and was rewarded accordingly
4) Your father had an SOC of 8+ as a result. I'd recommend that, somewhere in your formal name (near the end), the clan name TRALYEAEAWI features.

So, could you please roll [2d6] and [2d6]. The first will be how your father's family did and the second will determine your station in your family

You start aged 14 Imperial Years

For stats you need to roll STR:[2d6]+2, DEX:[2d6]-2, END:[2d6], INT:[2d6], EDU:[2d6]. You don't have to take a particular roll if it is bad! (e.g. 4,0,2,2,2). Keep going until you are satisfied the character is playable.


Please also [1d6] and [1d6]. These will determine how you get through your right-of-passage (Akhuaeuhrekhyeh). Oddly, the lower the better.

Oh yes, Please pick a short name for your character.

Those threads will be for equipment, character notes, etc. But the first entry will be my official view of your characters.

I will continue to update the first entry as your characters are developed.

Please use those threads for finalised stuff, not questions, etc. They can go here.
