I'd say that without any opposition, we should go with Western Lands.

I'm a bit reluctant to get into the magic system just yet (wow, considerably more than half the archetypes use magic... There's also a lot of "NPC" archetypes), so my choices are leaning towards:

Arimite Knife Fighter
Arimite Revenant
Thiasian Performer (for a non-Western Lands archetype but sounds like they often travel to the Western Lands).

I'm going to be off to the beach for the week. I will have my laptop and phone, but likely won't have that much time to check in.

I will try and make progress on a character as we get more of an idea of what people want to play, though it will be very awkward to do chargen on my phone...

I’m not an alcohol person but beach lounging and river kayaking will be involved.

The Western Lands sound great. (Sorry for the late response - just started reading the setting material over the weekend.)

Archetypes -- I'll go with a magic-user type. I'm thinking:

Aamanian witch hunter
Zandir charlatan
Gao sea rogue (not from the Western Lands, but definitely a traveling type)

Depending on what the rest of the party is, I'll go for one that fits in better.

That makes sense to me! ... but doesn't affect me, so this is purely an opinion, not a vote.

On step 5 of personalization, skills, where are the list of background skills? And the pick 2 general skills is from the first batch of skills? What ranking do these skill picks have?

Background skills are listed at the start of chapter 4: urban, rural, nomadic, wandering.

Picking skills from the list under your archetype, if it offers a choice.

Then picking 2 more "Common skills" from that list in chapter 4.

OK, yea, I saw the backgrounds, but it wasn't clear how that translated into a skill. Or is the background itself the skill?
