Wrydwood: general thread.

#1 Post by Spearmint »

as the campaign grows I may split this thread into other specific locations or when dealing with named NPC's.

May 14th 1066

Leibish & Sigrid

In the early evening, as lantern lights are turned high and the forest shadows grow deep and dark under the overcast canopy, an elven patrol returns to the settlement. There is much furore and celebration along with mourning. The rangers on patrol have encountered weary travellers escorting a daughter of the commune home to safety. With Harmony are the characters Sigrid , barbarian mage and skald from the northern steppes and the half-elven wanderer, smitten Leibish. Two hired hands torchbear for the trio, wide eyed and curious at the surroundings.

Arriving in Wrydwood concludes the 'Destiny with Harmony' expedition. a summary of that expedition is noted in that thread.

Harmony's story has come full circle. Once part of an expedition herself, the group adventured to uncover sacred barrows only to be ambushed by Bullywug minions and held captive by a swamp Hag. One was fed to the python, others sold or traded to an unknown fate. Harmony kept prisoner until the barrow was raided by those on the 'Secret of the Saurons' expedition. Once freed from her prison, the named characters promised to escort her safely home. Trekking along the riverbank encountering various creatures and the stronghold of the druid Bjornark travelling via Bogtown and surprisingly escorted through dangerous forests on the last leg by a bagpipe playing troll. Now here she is, delivered into the arms of concerned and thankful parents.

Vivaldius, father, Wrydwood elder and cleric of Silvanus receives the group. In thanks he humbly washes each of your feet. It is a ritual blessing to honour those people that trekked to bring his lost daughter home. An evening feast is attended which is both celebratory for her safe return also a wake for those who did not.

Sigrid & Leibish , you can each give your testimonial regarding the trek. Harmony shares her story and as the night draws in, oiled leaf lanterns are lit and released. Each memorial floats as a balloon might, rising with hot air drifting up between the canopy of trees and softly blown across the valley.

You stay at least two days, recuperating from the wounds received and setting time aside to restore knowledge of cast spells. As part of the Thanksgiving, Sigrid is mentored by a mage to improve her spell craft and she gains a new spell of choice.

Leibish is also blessed. "You have set your feet upon the path of the pilgrim. A stout wood should accompany a stout heart and serve to ward your steps.

This was once mine and served me well. You have returned a rib to close over my heart, so take this beam from my hand."
Vivaldius refers to his daughter and her absence as though his heart was exposed should a rib be removed and offers a heirloom quarterstaff in thanks. He noted from your story that you lost your own over the Moorwash and you consider clerical vows as you progress in life. The quarterstaff is a favoured weapon of Silvanus clerics (see deities thread) and you will be able we to strike twice with it once you make certain your rites.

He also tells you that this staff is imbued with an innate trait to cast 'Find snares and traps' (as per spell) which enables any wielder that extra instinct of detection for hidden devices that might endanger them.

May 15-16th you are entertained by the elven community. actions, comments and questions please

Though not privy to the conversation between Leibish and Harmony, she gathers there is some hesitation on the elven maiden's part but she knows better than to pry into such a sensitive subject. She spends the day learning a bit of elven customs though she finds their tongue difficult to master its intricate beauty almost a song in itself. She even spends time with an elven mage who teaches her a new spell they called Shield, which she expects will come in quite handy considering the trouble she often finds herself in. Though unlike any here, she feels welcome and content.

And when it comes time to give a testimonial about their adventures, she makes sure to portray Leibish as the selfless, brave leader, whose canny guidance lead them to the safety of the village, which of course was only her speaking the truth. She will even sing a brief song extolling the fearlessness and perseverance of Leibish in reaching their goal of returning Harmony. She listens to the others tell their tales and partakes of the feast, ending the evening watching the lighted leaf lanterns rise into the dark sky spreading their light as they are carried aloft by the breeze. That is my future, she thinks, but does not vocalize, a lantern in a vast sky of darkness borne aloft by forces she does not fully understand. But nonetheless she feels the breeze that brought her here is a good one.

Over the two days following their arrival in Wyrdwood, Leibish begins to realize the deep significance of their accomplishment in safely returning Harmony to her home. He graciously participates in the foot washing ceremony, partakes in the elven feasts, and accepts the quarterstaff Vivaldius presents to him as an hierloom.
Upon seeing the lanterns rise in honor of those lost in the elven expedition, he remains quiet and somber until the last of them disappear into the darkness. He feels all eyes fall upon him, silently calling for a public address. He rises, turns to the gathered crowd holding his newly acquired quarterstaff, and clears his throat.
In a calm and modest tone, he speaks: “My fellow elven cousins and esteemed companion, Sigrid, forgive my unprepared reflections which emerge from the heart. Our mission in life is not to shake up the world, but to fasten it firmly to its pegs. We are not bidden to climb the highest mountains and holler from their peaks but walk humbly upon the ground among the quiet shade. May these memorial lanterns illuminate the darkness before us and keep us on the path of wisdom and peace. We are planted in this world to bring order to chaos, step by step, until the nurturing light of Silvanus is arranged firmly in our world.
He glances at Harmony momentarily and then back to the audience. He sits and requests a song of catharsis from Sigrid.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery: “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

Sigrid listens quietly to Leibish's speech, thinking it quite lovely especially the part about not shaking up the world but to firm up its pegs. Skilvar had said something similar to her when she left the village when he instructed her to use the thread wisely and only when necessary. When Leibish calls for a song she thinks for a few moments and decides to sing the one Svinni had sung to her on the day she left her homeland. She rises brushing back her long hair, standing straight, and sings that song:

After the feast she finds Leibish and talks privately with him, "I know bonds of the heart hold you here for now, but my path leads elsewhere. I must leave on the morrow. And if our paths diverge, I hope you find all you seek here." And with that she retires for the night, though those lanterns of light floating into the darkness stay in her thoughts and dreams.

Wrydwood

May 17th 1066

Harmony has been brought home, though Destiny causes the adventurers to part ways. Sigrid determines to return to Helix having sojourned there in search of magic and lore.

It is plain to her learned eye that something is not quite right in the elven commune. Whatever that 'something' may be, its effects are felt in unspoken ways.

An elf patrol, so at home in the woods that they would walk as silent as leaves fall come tramping to the ruin, snapping branch, talking loud. Dwellings that should be filled with merriment and light atrophy with mould and dereliction. A Market Square that is barren of trade and the bustle of merchants, forge-fires whose embers are dusty remnants to once sparking industry.

Wrydwood is dying a slow death. Perhaps there are underlying issues that the Patriachs are addressing? Maybe they are ignorant, dismissive, contributors?

Whatever the cause, the barbarian mage is happy to move in and an elf patrol is organised to accompany her and any others back to Bogtown where she may arrange transport onwards to Helix.

I randomised some encounters that might hold up the travel but with none produced, you can arrive at your final destination a day later.
May 18th Sigrid arrives in Helix. I will post your arrival in the Brazen Strumpet Tavern thread. Please deduct one week's worth of upkeep and in the tavern thread, meet and greet fellow adventurers who prepare for next expeditions.

Wrydwood: evening soiree.

May 16th 1066.

After the first day's arrival in Wrydwood, the adventurers go through a whirlwind of introductions, receiving gratitudes of lei flower wreaths and acknowledgements from commune members for Harmony's return but also many questions that they cannot answer. While the quartet are entertained in the settlement, Harmony is absent from fellowship for much of the time.

There is an inquest, conducted by the sound of it to much rage and anger though behind the closed doors you can only hear the berating. It seems Patriarch Vivaldius takes the opportunity to scold Harmony for foolishness and the loss of kin on her ill fated expedition. And more than the deaths but the failure to achieve the intended goal of locating some ancient artefact that holds precious significance to the commune. The unfolding story of the tragedy perhaps undermining his position within the elven hierarchy and rather than accept some measure of responsibility it becomes easier to scapegoat survivors, even one as your daughter.

The joyous homecoming short lived upon her face as you meet over an evening feast. In the evening, Leibish and Harmony can promenade the forest glades and she shares some Wrydwood history and stories of her youth. Unspoken by her and not brought up by you, the impulsive proposal though it is another unanswered topic that is brought up and spoken by another. On the evening of the second day, May 16th, as Sigrid is away in another locale mentored in her newly acquired spell craft,
Vivaldius summons Leibish.

"This nonsense has come to my ears as the bellowing of an ox. My daughter, impressionable to any young bullock who comes along and a half-breed at that. Have I not blessed you with a ward to guide your steps that you would also rob me of my heart too. That I could say, "she has an older sister and custom demands that she marries first". But that has taken place and I am bereft of customs and ordinances to shelter behind. Instead my wrath and indignation are my shield and my word my sword."

Clearly the marriage proposal has not found favour in his eyes.

"She cannot say yes. It is not her place to do so. But I cannot say no for that place is neither mine. I can only set the dowry."

the practice seems that suitors provide a dowry or complete a task in order then to get permission granted to ask for the maiden's hand. Subject to the dowry, the permission gets granted and then the girl can say 'yea or nay'. Either way the dowry is lost. So suitors have to be fairly sure of a positive affirmation or getting married to 2nd, 3rd, 4th choices could prove very expensive indeed.

Harmony is brought forward. "My Father." she courtesy's formally then towards you, "My Lord." she acknowledges Leibish using the title reserved for the prospective groom.

You notice a large scale has been erected and he command her sit on the tray and counter balanced against it he pours grain until the trays rise to equalise. "Well, any daughter is worth her weight in gold. She should be worth more and fattened like a suckling pig, that harrowing journey wasting her flesh and bones. 6st, 8lbs. I will forgive the ounces. Converting into gold, her 92lbs weighs in at $18,400gp.

You wish to secure her future. That gold will secure the commune's. She can give her answer then. You get a year and a day or she gets betrothed in the Thornswild."

He seems very austere, prideful even, thinking he has set the bar too high and unachievable. it might be because you present not just as a bi-racial offspring but without much visible means of support.

He dismissed the pair of you and you can promenade once more to share collective thoughts.

Harmony gives you a gift. The pearl she took from the clam fishers and never sold to Sylvester has been inset into a gold ring. "They start life as an irritant in the gut of clams, coated over and again with mucus and polished into lustre by the pressure from without. From a grimy speck comes something beautiful. Keep this and keep hope." she slips it onto one of your fingers.

Leibish, comments, actions and thoughts going forward.

Leibish accepts the ring and pearl from Harmony. He asks incredulously, "Your father's temper flares at a time when your survival should be the greatest source of joy and gratitude? What artifact did you seek and what purpose could it serve that he values above your wellbeing?

Leibish talks with Harmony trying to decide upon his next actions as Sigrid looks set to depart back to Helix. Does he stay, does he go, can he quench the Father's wrath and satisfy his dowry demands?

here are the other comments made regarding Harmony and her expedition.
A young elven woman, bedraggled and frightened comes forth. Her name is Harmony and she says that she and her companions, traders from the Wyrdwood were ambushed as they trekked the Moor.

"We came through Bogtown but never stayed there. Elias had a basic map and was trying to locate some hidden barrows. We found one and stayed three days excavating it before we moved deeper into the moor."

The named person, possibly the one eaten by the snake seemed to be the group leader. The shortbow is elven made. Not hers though most elves do train from a young age with bow and sword.

"We sought an old barrow upon the Moors, a tomb to a of old. To pay respects and give our prayers.

But the frogmen attacked us and we were dragged here. Those who survived anyway. The hag seemed to hold some sway over the Wugs, serving her purposes. Some men came here, traders but not like my comrades. They took other prisoners away. I shied away from them too, hiding under the blankets in the cage lest they picked me out."
So some conclusions. It is obvious the party were more than humble traders and explorers. Harmony and Vivaldius are of the Silvanus faith as are most of the Wrydwood commune but some adhere to Herne tenets. There are Silvanus temples in Bogtown and Ironguard but none of the Herne shrines..

The Elkhorn shortbow you have is a prized domain weapon of clerics of Herne. The expedition seems to have been a joint enterprise to retrieve some relics which would aide the community revival. One is an old war horn, once blown by heroes of old during the War of Desolation. They also sought ancient scrolls containing rare and unique knowledge and divine spells.

What you are finding is that just as the Wrydwood slowly atrophies, so too the ability of the priests to commune directly with their God. You may note that for clerics, the first couple of levels of cleric spells are accessible to all priests however 3rd level + spells are gifted via divine intervention; an apostle of the faith lays hands in you to receive a specific gifting, a priest might receive an angelic visitation or via inspired dream or vision. Higher levels only by divine unction subject to piety.
So the priesthood here are not grasping more spells beyond 3rd level and the feeling is this is down to disfavour or some unbroken generational curse.

"My Father is angry but it will pass. His concern not just for me but for those we left behind. His hopes are deferred."

Harmony, it is my desire that this commune thrive so that we may make this our home - where you are most comfortable and familiar. Yet, something is not quite right here, a curse apparently has cast its shadow over Wyrdwood. Perhaps the absence of Herne shrines is what has brought this curse upon Wyrdwood? Perhaps there is some heretofore undiscovered offense that must be atoned by some worthy individual? Give me three days to investigate the matter to see what I can gather. I will return to you then, here.

Leibish further suggests the following investigative next steps to Harmony over the next three days:
  1. Socialize among the communal residents to find a follower of Herne tenets.
  2. Present the Elkhorn shortbow as a symbol of his solidarity with followers of Herne
  3. Propose an alliance between followers of Herne and Silvanus.
  4. Investigate what has brought the apparent curse upon the commune and servants of both gods.
  5. Identify what is required to break the curse
  6. Return to Vivaldius with a plan of action, offering to lead the effort

apologies for delay. Getting back into the swing of things health and campaign wise.

Wrydwood

May 17-20th 1066.

Leibish considers his options, reluctant to return to Helix with Sigrid and reluctant to leave Harmony without being able to address the community misfortunes.
Socialize among the communal residents to find a follower of Herne tenets.

Present the Elkhorn shortbow as a symbol of his solidarity with followers of Herne

Propose an alliance between followers of Herne and Silvanus.

Investigate what has brought the apparent curse upon the commune and servants of both gods.

Identify what is required to break the curse
Return to Vivaldius with a plan of action, offering to lead the effort.
Taking each point in turn. You meet with Phaeus, a young ranger and follower of Herne. One of the elves who patrolled by the Neanderthal Ruins. He can commit to journeying with you for the remainder of the season as addressing the ills is also a continued concern for him.

As to the shortbow you have acquired. The former owner, deceased in the Bullywug attack left no nearby kin. It is a favoured weapon of Herne clerics and potentially taking a cleric class rather than straight advance is your preferred choice. It makes sense to keep the bow and indeed you get the feeling that the community feel it is in worthy hands.

There is already 'an alliance' of the faiths, in the sense there are no factions fighting among themselves in the Wrydwood. Though you meet with Vivaldius disapproval regarding any betrothal, the elves are generally courteous and welcoming. You find hospitality and welcome though you are quick not to outstay that. There is no open intolerance towards half-elves. You can certainly propose something to the town council, especially if you consider undertaking a quest or expedition.

The expedition of Harmony's to recover various relics and scrolls was a failure but was started in an effort to resolve the lingering curse or ill effects.

You can make your case for further action.

Glad to have you back in the game!

Leibish turns to Phaeus asking "What other relics and scrolls need to be recovered? And if you are not aware, please lead me to who I can ask to join any planned expedition. Is it only Vivaldius?"

Leibish concludes, "I learned much from creatures of the moors and even more from its treacherous terrain. I understand it will take everyone's contribution to turn the curse over this community into a blessing. If I am to marry Harmony, I must put all my lot with this community and its welfare."

Hopefully there are choices of adventures ahead. Otherwise, perhaps rejoin Leibish with a current thread and we can make it a shared goal/objective for convenience.

Since I personally wanted to play through some obstacles courses with the Leibish character (with or without monsters are both appealing to me), I propose an obstacle course for an encounter. I also like chases, (similarly indifferent to being the quarry or the pursuer.) Any ideas for those game elements?

Wrydwood

May 17-20th 1066.

Phaeus considers the words of Leibish .

"My understanding is the expedition was undertaken to discover a hallowed crypt somewhere in the eastern wilderness of the Moor. A place of antiquity like an old library. To recover relics and tomes that might aid the distress that Wrydwood suffers.

The actual location was only rumoured and the maps were lost with the death of the leading cleric. Harmony does not know though the location they excavated was close to the barrow you found her.

That may be a good starting point?"
the ranger suggests.

As far as any answer to betrothal is concerned, Vivaldius has given you 'a year and a day' to meet his conditions. Discovering the relics that he commissioned the original quest for will obviously 'be worth their weight in gold' and may substitute actual gold value.

The other consideration is the Wyrdwood affliction is slowly progressing so though the elves are living in a commune that is suffering atrophy, it may take a few more seasons before the place goes from serious decline to critical to dire. So you are not pressured to an impending deadline.

Phaeus will accompany you in your travels, (at least for a year and a day). So the next question is how you want to proceed. You can return to civilization (Bogtown, Ironguard, Helix) with a view to initiate or join an expedition. You can retrace steps to investigate and perhaps excavate more of the Hag Barrow.

Or anything else.

chases are a staple of any expedition. Either hunting or being hunted ...

Wrydwood

May 21st 1066.

After much deliberations and heart tugging in a few directions, Leibish decides to take on a renewed quest to find various relics which may help replenish the health and vigour of the elven commune.

The reward, not gold or glory but the hand (and heart he hopes) of the fair elven maid Harmony. The mission though is fraught with danger and many unknown obstacles. Not least locating the reputed burial place of the relics are stored. Few clues to go on besides revisiting the Hag Barrow. With a timescale to achieve this given as 'a year and a day', Leibish can take some time to research and study, recruit and further help in wise sages, priests or mages or hire extra security with an armed group. For now, he is content to travel with ranger Phaeus and via a stopover in Bogtown, trek to Ironguard and avail himself of the library opportunities.
