jemmus wrote: Thu Jun 23, 2022 8:41 pm Sorry, I kept forgetting to reply to this post. Hiroshi lost On and carried his coins with him to the battle. He still has them, except for 15 sp for inns traveling from Chiyoda village to Kofu. I suppose he left his other stuff at the inn. He would have shot some arrows at the battle, but the rules down mention arrows depletion in Battles. So N/A.
Yea, Taisho is going to have to play those 15 sp. Hmm, is there any rules for ronin slumming it? Ronin should regularly be traveling about looking for work without enough coin to stay at bushi levels.

Things Hiroshi certainly took to war with him and the disposition (retained, lost, unsure):

Straw hat and raincoat - he went off to war in winter so we would have worn these on the road, not worn into battle though - lost in camp

Food for travellers - I assume he took these with for the campaign. Lost in camp.

??? Geta - he certainly would have worn these on the road, but not in battle? Lost?

Pouch with coin, flint and steel - retained at a loss of On

??? Furokishi sack with bandages and healing salve - can these be carried in battle or left in camp?

Bowyer's kit - carried on campaign (this lets him repair his arrows so would justify no loss during campaign) - left in camp and lost.

Sake - carried on campaign, left in camp and lost

??? Water bottle - carried on campaign, but can this be carried into battle (for quenching thirst during lulls in the battle)?

I'm not sure what he was collecting heads in (Land of the Rising Sun has a bag for collecting heads in its equipment list...)

??? I'm guessing the 2nd furokishi is also lost. Maybe that was what he collected heads in.

The second belt pouch seems reasonable to keep as part of keeping his coin pouch.

I think that's all his equipment other than weapons and armor which he obviously carried into battle and did not lose.

I don't see any rule about ronin being able to slum. The rules make the strange situation where poor ronin bushi Hiroshi pays 5 sp, but rich samurai shugenja Haruto pays 5 cp. Maybe because of bushi pride, no matter what the caste? For example, a ronin can make a deal to sleep in a warehouse or peasant's house? But lose a little On as a consequence?

No great deal. Taisho will spend the 5 sp as pay for escort.

We have another consideration for Hiroshi's possessions. In the contemporary art, samurai only had:
-Armor
-Dai-sho
-Yumi and quiver
-Sometimes an extra bowstring on a kind of reel
-Sometimes a folding fan.

Ashigaru had:
-Armor
-Katana or wakizashi (never both)
-Yari, naginata, or yumi
-Water flask
-A bandolier of uncooked rice tied into cloth packets.

Ronin tended to be closer in function to ashigaru than to samurai. For example, they might have to dig trenches or build field fortifications with the ashigaru.

So I'm going to say that Hiroshi still has his coin pouch, water flask, and furoshiki with bandages and salve. Everything else was in the camp. Some Taira ashigaru probably has them now. He knew he wouldn't be paid for the heads, so he left them behind when he escaped the Surrounded situation.

The pay for the yojimbo duty is 4 sp per day. One sp short of paying for lodging. From the rules' equipment and services prices, I estimated that that's what a thrifty merchant would offer.

(By the way, Bushido missed one kind of important historical fact: only samurai could carry the dai-sho. It was an indicator of their samurai caste. Ronin could only carry one sword).

OK, replacements purchased. Hiroshi is going to have to rely on Taisho being a bit generous though it seems like a bushi escorting a merchant should be paid at least lodging cost. Wouldn't the 4 sp/day be above lodging cost?

Oh, what clothes do bushi wear/take on campaign? What do they wear into battle? Hiroshi lost any clothing not worn... But may not have brought all on campaign.

I went through the rules on downtime jobs, and one of them is yojimbo guard. Jobs are generally for a month. A yojimbo earns the Danger Rating x his Level in sp. The Danger Rating is 2d5, +2 for Freelancers like you guys. So an average of 7sp. For 2nd Level Hiroshi, 14sp per month. Not even enough to pay the 5sp inn cost per day. But the rules say that chars can earn a lot of money from Hazardous Jobs such as yojimbo. They also rules say the GM can reduce the pay period from a month to some other period.

So taking that into account, I'm going to say that 2nd level Hiroshi and Akemi are paid 8sp per day. 1st level Buru gets 4sp per day. Room and board are paid for by the merchant. (Buru and Akemi's cheap lodging is a good deal for him).

Frank, did you see that there's a new RP thread up? https://www.unseenservant.us/forum/view ... 95#p616495 Taisho's up for an action.
