The pilgrims walk on the road under the gray winter sky and reach Fujikawa-cho. In front of a house beside the street, there is a stall for selling goods. An old merchant's wife grandmother, or maybe great-grandmother, putters with arranging teapots and an ceramic sake cups. She sees the pilgrims and smiles a mostly toothless smile. Konichiwa, pilgrims-san! Then to the guide, Konichawa, Heitaro-san. Thank you for your hard work. Then to the pilgrims, Thank you for your hard work, pilgrims-san. I have heard of what you have done. It has been a long time since anyone has stayed all night on The Mountain in the winter. There used to be a lot of dangerous yokai on Fuji-san at night, but I don't know about these days. Now there are so many people in Nippon that the yokai hide away. Anyway, it is an admirable thing you have done. Your ancestors are surely pleased and honored.

The doddering old grandma seems to ponder something for a while and perhaps lose her train of thought. Oh, and thank you for your hard saving the pilgrims lost in The Forest. What happened was very tragic, neh? She nods a few times, brow furrowed, affirming her thoughts. Then looks up and smiles again. Well, please have some nigore-zake (cloudy unfiltered sake). It's homemade and just finished last evening. She pours hot sake from a teapots, one cup for each visitor. The guide says, Thank you, I shall partake. He sips and says, It's delicious, grandmother-san! Thank you very much. The pilgrims also drink, and the nigore-zake really is delicious. More delicious than any sake they've had in any inn. Behind the initial sweet flavor of the liquor is the taste of the rice it's made from itself. Healthy, vigorous, sun-grown and wind-blown rice. Grown at the foot of and in the presence of sacred, magnificent, huge and majestic Fuji. The pilgrims look up at it's huge form, now from the ground again. It seems as beautiful, distant, and otherworldly to them as before. Almost. Somehow, it's an overwhelming beauty that seems more approachable than before. Like they've gained a little understanding of the nature of the vast, multitudinous nature of the holy mountain. And somehow become a part of it as a friend. A magnificent, awe-inspiring friend who knows them remembers them, and forever befriends them as a part of her/it as well.

+65 On for Haruto and Taisho for getting to the top of Fuji-san and staying to see the sunrise. In winter. Taisho has 10+ shungendo to add, based only on exorcising two Spirit Rank 5s

Haruto has escorted the kuge to Kofu, encountered a kitsune along the way, been acting ninyo and successfully resolve a situation, fought a yurei and an oni, and gotten back to home base Fujikawa-cho. He goes to Level 2, with shugendo set at 12 (instead of 10, the base for moving to Level 2. Next level at 20 shugendo, I believe.).

Taisho's shugendo
We need to calculate Taisho's shugendo for the pilgrimage. I don't know the Power used for the various spells.

Day 1 - In the forest
Exorcise shoryo - 5.0 shugendo
5 Blessing - ? shugendo

Day 2 - On the mountain
Exorcise oni - 5.0 shugendo
3 Blessings - ? shugendo
12 Healing - ? shugendo

Day 3 - in the forest, Back to Fujikawa
1 Perceive Truth - ? shugendo

The pilgrims arrive before Haruto's brother's house in Fujikawa. The young budoka Saburo says, We'll continue on the the inn. I suppose we'll travel with bushi-san-- he nods to the ronin-- To sell what was on the oni's body. To tell the truth, we need the money. We have to get it wherever we can find it along the way in our pilgrimage.
Which is really also a quest for testing and improving our skills.
His female budoka friend Rumi says, I hope this is not farewell and we will meet each other again here in Kai. But if you ever need food or lodging-- very humble lodging-- or help-- in Etchu province, please only ask my family. They are in Aoibayashi village. Saburo says, And the same for my family in Tamura village in Etchu. It was our honor to see the Sun rise from Fuji-san with you. The two bow to the Haruto, the ronin, and Taisho.

The ronin with scowl line wrinkles on his face looks at Haruto and Taisho and simply replies, If you're coming with us to Kofu tomorrow morning, we'll sell the gems and comb together. I'll tell you honestly, I don't know at all what they're worth. And I don't haggle about sell or buy prices. If you aren't coming with us, write your names down and tell us where to send the coins to. He takes three items out of his left sleeve and holds them before each pilgrim's face, and the guide's too: a woman's comb inlaid with mother of pearl in a wisteria vines design; a small pearl; and smooth piece of jade with a hole bored through it.

Haruto and Taisho enter the compound of the residence of the ninyo of Fujikawa-cho. The groundskeeper and his assistant are sweeping light snow off of the stone pathway to the house's entrance. They step off of it and bow low. The returned pilgrims scale the steps to the veranda and stand before the door. Haruto's sister-in-law slides the door aside. Thank you for your hard work, Haruto-kun, priest Taisho! Your father and brother will be very proud of you, Haruto-kun. And I'm sure your family will be proud too, priest Taisho.[/dialog] The samurai wife's face reveals her concern for her husband and his father, gone off to battle against the Taira, and no news of that as yet. The little kids of the house peek from behind the door lintel, excited and beaming at having their friends and uncles in the house again.

Considerations for actions:
Rumi and Saburo have issued an invitation to support the PCs in Etchu (two provinces away, north of and adjacent to Shinano. Need a Strategy roll to get the current significance of Etchu. Otherwise, need dialogue about whether you invite them also, or just be polite and say nothing.

The loot from the oni is not so insignificant. You can go with the pilgrims to Kofu tomorrow, or stay in Fujikawa-cho, live for free, and get news from the front first.

Actions?

Taisho could help them sell the loot if that isn’t out of place for a Shinto priest.

We need to get back to Kofu at some point anyway to meet with the others when they return from war, so Taisho at least will accompany the pilgrims and utilize his commerce knowledge to make sure we get a fair price for the loot. He will do some training while waiting if he arrives before the war party. I've lost track of the timeline - hmm, could we use Google Sheets or Google Docs to make a calendar and then show when various events happened?

As I understand the culture, Shinto priests are mostly not full time, so Taisho is a merchant AND a priest. Correct me if I've got it wrong.

There's a thread named "Log - PCs Tracking.
There's a shared Excel sheet that has info on the PCs' current, location, events that day, current HP, etc. I think the bushi are around 8 days ahead on the calendar. So you have a few days to train while you're waiting.

OK, Taisho is off to Kofu with the pilgrims in the morning. Is Haruto joining him? Or is Haruto going to wait here for his brother to return?

(Quick note while I have time - Haruto will want to stay a few more days with his family, having a feeling of real purpose and wanting to see his brother. Even seen his father away from the new wife. He will scry on them at dusk as is his habit, now that he's back off the mountain, and in so doing perhaps learn of their success and whereabouts. After their safe return, he is bolstered by this encounter on Fuji-san and will wish to gather his friends and set out on the longer pilgrimage to the Ranja-san shrine.

...that said, there's a lot to narrate in there, so have at it. :) )

For Shugendo, Taisho gets .2 per healing, so 9 x .2 is 1.8. For blessings, he gets .6 (55/100) per blessing (but remember each blessing affects 2 - so not sure if that 5 is blessing on 5 characters). I think just 2 blessings succeeded so that's 1.2 Shugendo. Perceive Truth is not listed for Shugendo awards (but if it follows other things, it would be .2 for 2nd level).

OK, so 13.2 additional shugendo for Taisho, new total is 23.2. (He was at 10, the minimum for going to Level 2).

We need calculations for Haruto's shugendo also, but no rush. Whoops, I just said that Haruto gets 12 shugendo and doesn't have to calculate, didn't I? :)

So Haruto stays in Fujikawa for a few days, but Taisho heads to Kofu. Will post soon.

The evening of arriving back at his brother's house, Haruto enters the kakuriyo and observes his father and brother. They are in camp. A physician is tending to a slice his father has in the skin in the back of his left hand. His brother is attending to a puncture wound through his left tricep, apparently made by an arrow. Haruto is able to understand his brother's state of mind more clearly than his father's. He shares only his father's blood, but he shares both the blood of father and mother with his brother. Haruto is close to his older brother. Growing up, they didn't fight like most siblings. His brother was older, and Haruto a sensitive, deep-thinking child. His brother, like about everyone else, treated him with fondness and unspoken affection. He was a unique child, and everyone thought-- somehow special.

It seems to Haruto from his brother's and father's thoughts that the first engagement of a pitched battle with the Taira was inconclusive. The falling of dusk interrupted the killing and maiming of the two armies at each others' throats. The forces have retired to their respective camps, to bind wounds and prepare for the battle coming in the morning. Haruto's brother and father seem in firm spirits, resolved to fight to their utmost ability and uphold the honor of the Takeda clan. And of the family.

Haruto and Taisho see that the wife of the deceased samurai is still a house guest. Yayoi has empathy and leaves the lady alone with her grief. To have one's husband possessed by a yurei and forced to... make himself no longer present..., she says to Haruto and Taisho. The sadness must feel is cannot be imagined. She feeds her brother-in-law and her familiar guest Taisho hot rice, salted and roasted little trout from the nearby Fujikawa River, hot tea, and warm sake. Little by little, the mage's and the priest's bodies forget the deep cold of the past day and night on Fuji-san. Colorful extra blankets are neatly folded on the floor beside each young man's futon sleeping cushion. They go back and forth from sleeping like logs to having dreams of the events of the past two days appear before their mind's eyes.

Horses and bushi proudly march up a road. Then, march back down it. Like red ants, marching to fight their natural enemies the black ants. Who might be waiting at home, in whatever numbers.

A banshee flies above summertime trees, groaning, then ending with an mournful wail. Saying, “All's bad with the world.”

The gakusho and shugenja have vivid dreams of their toes being frozen and lost. And regretfully discarded on this cold night. It had to be done.

A horrible face, an oni monster from the world of childhood nightmares, bares its misshapen face, long upper and lower fangs and shakes it shaggy head and long dark eyebrows at the pilgrims. We are many, and you are few. Do you think you enter the kakuriyo lightly, little boy and spotted and identified bad priest? It probably just an and out, back and forth dream. The tired pilgrms barely notice when thick blankets are formally draped over the shoulders and they sleep, warm.

Taisho's travel to Kofu with the pilgrims up next. He'll need a Wit ST + 1 for his Merchant background to get a fair sell price for the items from the sleeve of the Fuji-san oni. 10 - 75 sp per char, depending on a Tricked to Artfully Found the Right Collector roll. A successful Wit +1 roll wil get 51 SP per char. Effect Numbers vs. the ST will apply.

On the road to Kofu, Taisho inspects the pearl, drilled jade piece, and mother-of-pearl inlaid comb. The pearl was a valuable gem, and the comb had good workmanship. But the jade had some white mottling, so it turned out to be less-valuable jadeite. He estimates the value of everything to be around 275 to 280 silver moons. But the jadeite pendant or charm appeared to be old. It was in a style from at least a generation before. It could be valuable to a collector.

When the pilgrims arrive at the city's edge, they are inspected at a checkpoint by grim-faced and very stern Takeda bushi. They are allowed to enter Kofu, but aretold to report to the Special Duties Commission office for inn passes immediately, without stopping at any other place first. The people on the street seem variously agitated, distressed or somber. The ronin looks around at them, observing and considering. Three young, dirty street youths approach them. Porter services for carry your property out of Kofu? one said. Saburo replied, Out of Kofu? Why? The teenager looked at him with an incredulous look. Did you just come out of the boondocks? Three copper days for the news. The budoka produces the coins. The ronin listens with perhaps professional interest, but face impassive. The Takeda and Minamoto got beaten like turnip thieves and came back with their tails touching their stomachs. No one has seen Yoritomo's face, he's running away so fast that it's hard to catch sight of his arse. Kofu Castle is wide open for a siege, and all of this.... He sweeps his arm grandly at the residences, shops, taverns, warehouses, teahouses, brothels and clan government offices around. ...Is wide open for fire. The ronin kind of nods to himself, as if it is what the professional soldier had surmised.

Taisho and the pilgrims report to the Special Duties Commission office to present themselves to get permission to stay in Kofu for some days. The four low samurai clerks in the front room seem variously worried, grim, or mournful. The sliding shoji doors to the Commissioners and the scholar's room behind are closed, and the travelers are not invited to go beyond them. The travelers state their names, registries are searched, and names are found. The outsider inn guests are issued passes to stay in inns for three days in Kofu. The ronin spots a hot tea kettle on low coals in the clerks room. with teacups around it. Some tea on a cold day for us travelers, friends? He drops four silver moons on the issuing clerk's desk. He takes out brush and paper and issues full week 10-day passes.

Taisho leads the pilgrims to various likely merchant shops he has observed during his three months stay in Kofu. But he was unable to find anyone especially interested in the jadeite pendant or charm. They may be buying conservatively because the Takeda defeat. But more likely, they don't think the old think has a good buyer for profit. Taisho knows that a Nippon merchant is no less of a disciplined warrior than a bushi-- when confronted with adversity, they weigh the odds, risks, and benefits, and act with cold self-discipline. He sells the three items for 276 silver moons total, about what he expected. He borrows the merchant's abacus and does the math. 51 moons and 6 days per party member. He divides the coins and gives the ronin and two budoka each their shares. He keeps Haruto’s to give him when he arrives in Kofu. Or if not, to give to his sister-in-law Yayoi in Fujikawa-cho.

When Taisho arrives at the Yoroh-no-Taki (Elderly Person Waterfall) inn, and found Akemi there. She's happy to see Taisho. Taisho-san! You're back! It seems she wants to give him a sisterly hug-- but that is not done in Nippon, except by sisters to young little brothers. But she doesn't formally bow either, the way one would do with a someone who's outside nakama inner circle of close friends. Taisho expects her to ask about the pilgrimage to Fuji-san, but instead she says, The Battle of Okitsu in Suruga is over, but Kentaro and Hiroshi have not returned. It seems she has been waiting for a long time to discuss her news with a friend. I tried to find them but... the Minamoto controlled the bodies of the not-present on the battlefield. I think they went north, through Suruga, instead of directly through the pass back to Kai. If they did that, and were healthy and didn't stop, they could be back only four or five days from now. Tomorrow, I will check the pass again. She looks down and look of care and worry crosses her face. She looks up at Taisho. Many unexpected things can happen in the confusion war. Isn't that right, older brother Taisho-san?

Taisho and Haruto get 51 sp, 6 cp each. A successful BCS would have gotten more, but I didn’t dock you for the failed BCS. I was going to do it by plus/minus 5% per effect number difference, but that didn't seem to make sense. If we did it that, all parties with no one with Commerce skill would need to roll a critical success not to get docked when selling their loot.

Taisho can train for up to 6 days before Hiroshi and Buru arrive at the inn. Haruto in Fujikawa's evening in the kakuriyo for this coming next. If your chars want to change actions or intervene at any point, just let me know. Trying to get Buru, Haruto, Hiroshi, and Taisho all back on the same day. :)

Yea, some of the skills in Bushido, you don't want to use if your BCS is not greater than 10, and some really even if it's not significantly greater than 10.

What can I easily find training in? I assume with less than 10 days, I just get some days training towards the next increment.

Here's a list of the training places in Kofu: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6h25a1rjd15ty ... s.pdf?dl=0 I'm not sure how much you could gain in 6 days, but I suppose every bit helps.
