May 20th 1066

in Ythgar's absence I will move this on.

The collective of adventurers and local rogues decide to go on the front foot and investigate the connections of the minion who attacked them. A few cottage industries were near Miss Quirrell's home but a stable, smithy and farriers was not among them though such a business is not hard to locate. Gunter at least has met Ivan the Ironmonger (in the Bogtown business thread) and he can point you in the right direction.

the minion:
One has a few tools on a waist belt, awls and small hammer. A pouch of short nails. Possible a farrier with his hoof shoeing tools. It might at least lead to an identity if you want to follow that line of enquiry.
You arrive at a small forge and tack shop. The place has a boundary wall around the workshop, a small stable to one side where some pack ponies graze. The place is a clutter of refurbished tools for general crafts and around the shoeing shack, several castoff shoes have been welded or screwed into various trinket designs. While the NPC beef if the team hang back to case the joint, Gunter, Golgarth, Froedo & Sidkrake enter.

Three men in leathered aprons are about various tasks, one greets the inquirers.

"Can I help you?"

"Well met, me mates and I have acquired some new horses and wanted to see about your services." Gunter will engage the minion in "shop talk" and arrange to have their 4 horses brought in for shoeing.

While the man is engaged with Gunter, the rest of the party can look about for signs of their quarry, or evidence of the withering men.

Golgarth

yes, bringing the horses under a guise could be good work.

While the man works, he will surreptitiously cast a Detect Evil spell and try to hone in on any corrupting influences.

If none are found, he will bring out the toolkit taken from the minion.

"Recognise any of these? Came from a fellow that we met out yonder."

A good idea to shoe the horses as an excuse to conduct business, two of the labourers set about the task. The third watches over the yard and Golgarth who sports his Cromm-wear rather obviously.

"Denny's, must have pulled a sicky, haven't seen him all day. Out yonder? Unusual he normal sticks to the flophouse and tavern." the foreman comments. He hurries his tradesmen up to service the horses, though the yard is not busy.

Casting a Detection spell (magic or evil) is a rather obvious action as you have to present your holy symbol to read and auras and radiation. Ordinarily, casting such would be considered rude and offensive if not invited to do so. It makes the foreman nervous and openly angry, he protests at the suggestion that 'evil' is present in his yard.

Which it is of course as several horse shoe designs, in the shape of insects or ticks in particular give a 'ping' as imbued with unholy influences.

Gunter can spot the labourers wear baggy shirts under their work aprons but each has a small spinal lump near the collar that in your view, hides a rather large feasting tick.

Golgarth

" Witherman Denny is dead. His body submerged in the boggy moor. We slew him as he assaulted us and killed the parasite leeching on his spine.

You don't have to go the same way. Deliverance is at hand for the repentant. Tell us how we can help you?"

He speaks to the foreman, reaching for his holy symbol rather than his Warhammer. I am trying to figure not all the cultists adhere voluntarily, some may be coerced.

Gunter listens to Golgarth's address to the foreman and adrenaline hits his system knowing a fight is coming. At the same moment he notices the parasites on the laborers.

"To arms! The farrier's men gots ticks!" he yells charging the nearest and hoping the children's scarf actually helps protect his mind from evil influences.

Farrier's Yard.

Gunter reacts with speed and power, swinging his axe which cleaves the yard labourer in the skull. He splatters brains and tick halves under the horse's feet.-7hp.

Sidkrake & Froed attack the second as he shoes a horse. Seeing death dealt out he jumps upon the unsaddled horse and gees it towards the yard gates. A flying dagger stabs him in the shoulder -2hp.

Golgarth tries to talk, reasoning with the suspected cultist but once weapons are drawn the man throws ashes from the forge into the priest's face and runs into a workshop. He begins to mutter in strange tongues.

In the yard, you hear a grinding and clanging as some of the scattered tools are knocked over by dozens of horseshoes that whizz by to interlock and frame themselves into a metal mastiff. Some of the shoes begin to heat up, glowing a fiery red as though heated in a forge.

"We want at least one alive so we can talk to them/it.

I will focus on the Farrier, you three get the horseshoe creature, hope the others get the rider."

Casting a Sanctuary spell upon himself, he enters the workshop unarmed, trying to reason again with the tick afflicted guy.

"Fookin hells, shouldda never left the farm..."

Gunter looks around frantically as the metal beast assembles hoping to spot a source of water or quenching oil. If he finds anything suitable nearby he'll try to quench the beast. If nothing looks promising he'll run into the workshop following Golgarth and the Foreman.

Farrier's Yard.

The labourer trying to bolt on the horse is quickly surrounded at the yard gates and though he parries a number of attacks, the horse is restrained from leaving.

A pail of water at hand, Gunter immerses the dog-on-heat, a billow of hissing steam sizzles from the hot irons. Froed and his hound Kolt go hammer and fang against the creature which in the form of a large dog, tries to bite back. It snaps at Sidkrake who stabs at it, warding it away with his blade. The dwarf gets in a hefty blow and send one of the multitude of horseshoes scattering across the yard.

"If we can break it, we can kill it." he says.

In the workshop, Golgarth tries diplomacy and reason. The Farrier is very hesitant and picks up a large tool but does not swing at the Cromm priest.

"I know who you are. Another Reformer. But your time is over. The wind blows a change and the Pestilence has been released."

He taunts the priest in an odd voice though you can tell from his twisted countenance that he struggles with the possession he suffers.

"There ya go Froed!" Encouraged by the dwarf's success in causing some damage and hoping the water helped make the metal beast more brittle he joins in the attack.

Golgarth

He keeps his weapon to hand but wants to continue conversation. This is the closest we have come to actual cultic encounter that wasn't just melee. So my thoughts are to keep the distance between us while the Sanctuary spell is still in effect and get the guy to talk.

There are so many questions I could ask. Who are 'they'? How does the cult work. Where do they meet, who is the boss. What are their aims?

Questions regarding Barraclough and any significance to the refurbishment of the Bogtown Well.

If he attacks I will then reciprocate but I would rather get him talking, taunting, boasting, revealing details and plans.

Farrier's Yard.

Gunter lunges at the Construct but his axe swipe is dodged aside. The dwarf and dog continue to assault the creature, Sidkrake managed to stab into it but his blade only seems half as effective against the hollow metal animated sculpture. The invoked creature continues to grind and snap, glowing with fiery irons but unable to clamp down upon an opponent.

At the gate, the labourer escapee is dismounted and beaten by the quartet of aides.

Golgarth perseveres with a passive aggressive approach, hoping to disarm the Farrier physically and mentally. The man twitches under the leeching of the giant tick which manipulates his nervous system.
Inside the cabin, the Farrier talks, spewing threats and boasts.

"She is reborn. A mother of nature, hidden from ages past. What are men but vanity in the wind, an empty sighing. Even the Elves feel the doom coming, the tide turning, the forests dying. A time to atrophy and decay. Unless a grain of seed dies it remains a seed but if it dies it shall become much more fruitful."

The Farrier speaks some cryptic words to the priest of Cromm's questions. The inference is perhaps towards a resurgent Impurax cult which rumours of wilderness pestilence would testify to.

actions please.

Gunter give me three attacks as I will try and resolve the yard combat with the Construct.

Golgarth give me three specific questions and three Wisdom checks for each. Successful passes will garner more understanding of the answers

Gunter strikes twice with his axe but it clangs and skids harmlessly across the metal beast.

"Down with ye ya rusty cur!" he yells , finally connecting with a solid blow.

Golgarth

"I seek peace not trouble. And wisdom to learn. I am just a humble itinerant, a man of faith in a world of many faiths.

Who is your priest? Your intercessor, your teacher and guide?

These familiars that help you commune. How do you receive them. What do they do in your devotion?

Elder Barraclough, the mason priest who restored the Well. Where may I find him?"

Golgarth: Wisdom check vs 13 (any Cravat bonus?) [4d6]=21 [4d6]=12[4d6]=17

He has a feeling that the questions are wearing thin and with his Sanctuary spell reaching its duration, begins to caress his Warhammer ready for action.

Farrier's Yard.

The battle in the yard continues for a few more frantic rounds. After coshing the fleeing labourer off the horse, he is ganged up on and summarily coshed again. The flat of blades, fists and pommels turning his lights off. Dellboy,& Rodders bind him roughly as Solly & Thommo rush to aid the group in conflict with the Construct guardian.

The red hot animated metal mastiff wards it's master furiously. Targeting Gunter -4hp with a bite that grasps his torso, his thin armour blackening under the forge-fire heat and his skin branding on ribcage and shoulder as the beast tears into him.

The cry energises the group who muster more attacks and under hammer blows and half-damaging blades, the beast is shattered. The killing axe blow falls to Gunter with a revengeful stroke.
Inside the cabin, as the melee wages outside, the infected Farrier continues his tirade.

He answers Golgarth's questions.

"Like followers of Cromm Cruach, is not each man pastor of his own home and hearth? But you seek the 'Prophets'. They come regaled in their finery and summon Her amongst us. We receive each of Her hand, a Familiar, a Guide. It is in becoming one flesh that souls are joined. A matrimony sweet with promises for eternal life. Are we not all born to die. To blossom forth only to corrupt and wither. Old and infirm. Speed up our fleshly demise, let us be reborn anew, incarnate of one hive mind.

Your friend. He walks in newness of life, he has taken on incorruptible nature. Find him at the altar he serves."

The man taunts, almost boasts. Especially when it comes to the missing elder. The inference is that he has switched allegiance though the implication is that his 'newness of life' is actually some form of 'after life'.

Almost certainly you feel the Her is directed towards Impurax which makes sense with the references to pestilence and disease. Fleas and ticks are oft major carriers of such which also ties in to the 'plague doctor' outfit spied in Verne's store and the tick familiars that leech upon devotees.

Where this 'altar' and presumably temple if occult activities may be is not clear. The main place of worship in Bogtown that is maintained is the Silvanus temple. So probably the location is elsewhere behind closed doors, in a mining creek nearby or underground in unexplored caverns.

As the Farrier finishes, he does attack but surrounded by eight to one, his defiance is futile. With your wish to take folk alive for questioning, you now have two men, the Farrier and one labourer tied up.

actions Golgarth & Gunter. What would you like to do with them and where to go next?

Golgarth

Perhaps taking these to the elf temple, the Silvanus place might be the best place, especially if they are supposed to have a group of bounty hunters connected to them and they must have a cell of some kind as they kept (ooc knowledge) the werewolf prisoner.

I wonder why though, these bounty hunters are not chasing the cultists out.

Still think the town council may be infiltrated hence the ragtag Duchy militia not really rooting the problem out.

So for actions: hand the Farrier into the care of the temple if that is possible and then let us go search the skeleton cave.

"Oi Stonefather, that metal beast nipped me a good one before I stove it's head in. Would you be able to pray for healing before we search the premises?"

Turning to Sidrake, "Sid, why don't you and I toss the place together but be wary of traps or more of them ticks. This lot's clearly been up to no good so who's to say what they got squirreled away round here."

Gunter and Sid will carefully search men, the immediate area and any outbuildings for anything of interest.

Farrier's Yard

Golgarth who has used up his healing spell abilities does some triage in the injured Gunter, restoring +1hp to the branded fighter.

You pick up the deceased labourer, covering him with a blanket and carrying him into the cabin. The two captives, the Farrier foreman and a junior labourer are bound. Their leeching ticks removed. The best method seems to be a red hot poker applied to the tick's carapace which shrivels them as their host minion is still being feed upon. Once a host dies, the ticks seem free to crawl away. Listening to the boastings of the Farrier, it does seem the ticks are summoned via some kind of ritual. Once the tick is removed, the manifestations of jerkiness in movements, facial expressions and control is released.

You search the yard and frisk the men. Plenty of trade tools abound but few treasures. You can rob the yard of their takings, 100gp but the cleric would disapprove especially if the money has been earned through honest trade. You do find though a thick leather belt, like a weightlifters support. It has six of the horseshoes tacked on to it and etched upon each are the words "under the hammer of the gods'.

Without any way to detect if the belt and horseshoes are more than just ordinary, you might have to trial any experimental use. Sidkrake
"Put it on and chuck one at the next skeleton you see. Who knows it might crack a skull or bring us luck."

Then as more digging about through crates and cupboards happen, you stumble upon an old chest with a padlock. It can be easily bypassed by the rogue dwarf. Froed opens it up and inside are three more festival outfits similar to the one that you noted at Verne's.
Deciding not to draw attention to yourself by dragging bound men through town to the Silvanus Temple, the captives are bound and kept under watch here by Rodders & Dellboy, one taking guard and one running to the temple reception.

It leaves the others to return down Bogtown Well , a few tools in hand and cultist garb in sacks. You 'shoo' away folk ascending and descending with water pails, chained the entrance and descend yourselves once more down the spiralling shaft.

Inside the cavern cistern and against the back wall, Solly & Sid hack the crevice a little wider to allow armoured folk to pass through. No doubt the thudding if picks will have alerted the meditating skeletons though checking through the crevice you see no movement beyond.

actions Gunter & Golgarth going forward I will npc Froed with Yhtgar no-showing.
