After an appropriate bow and such to the luge, Trish will fall back as instructed and will help one of the ronin with his trunk.

Akemi comes forward. Haruto-san, if you will allow me, I will carry your chest to Kofu. I suppose it would be an indignity for a samurai to do it, but it would none for one of my station. She doesn't state what that station is.

Shino has an alert look on her face. The coy, cute demeanor is gone. Instead, her face shows a keen intelligence and sharp awareness. She backs away a few steps and says to Haruto, in a kind of sharp, crying out voice, You are correct, shugenja-san. I am a kitsune. But I did not lie to you. My father was caught in a trap and killed seven days ago. The same woodsman found our lair and my mother and siblings four days ago. Only I and my brother escaped being snapped up and shaken to the death by his dogs. That man was of the family of one of you. He has probably already sold my father's, mother's, brothers' and sisters' skins to another human. She gives no indication with her eyes which one of the travelers it could be.

I wanted vengeance. But I am only a young kit, and the woodsman has many dogs who are stupid, but have with keen noses and strong jaws. So I came for the brutal woodsman's relative, rather than for him himself. But I, just a young kit, failed to be a convincing human. In her forest animal night-cry voice, she says to Kentaro, and now Taisho and Akemi, You knew and didn't slay me. That I will not forget. And for that, I will commend you to my brother. At four-legged speed kimono-clad Shino runs to the side of the road and disappears into the the weeds and shrubs. The sharper-eyed travelers spot motion on the browns, reds and golds of the steep forest floor above the shrubs. The sharpest-eyed of them see the white tip of the tail of an orange fox, stopped and turned to look back at them. Before it runs again, goes over the ridge, and disappears from view. Only the browns, reds and golds of the silent forest floor remain.

Does Haruto give Akemi permission to remove his chest from the horse?
Does anyone attack the kitsune, either by sword or bow?
jmcatty, actions for Omi and Ito? If not, I'm going to NPC them for the remainder of the scene to Kofu city. Then turn them loose until you're ready.
Any other actions?

Omi exchanges a look with Ito. They seem to be having an argument without really saying anything audible to the others. Finally Omi shrugs and begins to lead the party down the road to their destination. Ito has a smug look on his face and also moves ahead. Both carefully store their gifts from the Kuge.

WB jmcatty! Need Omi's and Ito's calls on something to proceed. Wearing above AC 3 on the highway is prohibited. But the samurai back in the village where you guys started gave you passes to wear full armor while escorting the noble to Kofu. But not in Kofu itself. I NPCed Ito as hiring a porter to carry his armor, because he didn't want the embarrassment of taking off armor in public to enter Kofu. The cost to Kofu is 20 silver.

But I NPCed Omi and choosing to wear his on the road. To enter Kofu, he may have to take it off in public and lose some On. Did he decide it wear it, hire a porter, or carry it himself? Again, a porter is 15 silver for the 10 ri to Kofu. Removing it in public would cost up to 2 On, depending on the conditions. Carrying it himself would cost 1-2 On, for the same reasons. Or a fourth option is to wear it and just not enter Kofu. Ito has the same choices, of course.

You played Ito correctly. Omi will wear his armor and we can roleplay the entry into Kofu.

It was Haruto, not Kentaro, with the kitsune story. ;)

Kentaro treats the gift reverently. He has no thoughts about further renumeration... after all, he is currently carrying more gold than he has ever had. He follows the Kuge's direction and falls back with the other ronin. He has his letter allowing his armor and if Omi doesn't remove his, then neither will Kentaro.

As Kentaro falls back, he dismounts. He lets his horse be saddled with the extra trunks, nobody mounted but the Kuge.

Haruto planned to expose the Kitsune to the guards, but well enough that she flees.

Kentaro is slackjawed at meeting a Kitsune and takes no action. He tries to make sense a story, not understanding how any of them are related to a woodsman. He struggles with it, trying to make rhymes for a song as they walk.

A summary of this long post will follow. The party is entering from west, on the straight road marked Koshu-Kaido.

Image

The procession continues along the Koshu-Kaidoh, which is now a straight highway running along the flat floor of Kofu's valley. The travelers can see why a city arose here. The mountain ridges to either side of the long vale have travelled have parted, leaving a wide valley. Over the ages it has filled in with sediment and organic detritus from the mountain slopes, leaving a broad, flat floor. Hundreds of rectangular rice fields stretch from mountain ridge to mountain ridge. A river runs rather slowly north ot south through the valley. Small fishing boats sit still upon it, and bigger merchant boats move along it, upstream and downstream. The rice harvest is already done in this lower elevation. In the fading sunlight, peasants squat beside smouldering heaps of husks in the dry fields and thin plumes of smoke rise tall to the sky. The homey scent of burning rice straw is in the air.

The kuge seems anxious, and urges Omi’s horse forward to approach the city of Kofu proper. The travelers gain a clearer view of the city’ castle. It is built on a rise. The triangular area at the top of map. For map scale reference, it’s right around 200 yds wide at the middle. The river borders it on the west and fills a moat surrounding the castle’s other two sides. The bushi among the travelers know that it wasn’t built to repel invaders. It’s a yamajiro. A mountain stronghold designed not to prevent an attack, but to let the attackers in little by little and murder them from all sides.
Image

The group enters the edge of the city proper. The normally discrete Nipponese townsmen going about their business stop and stare at the kuge-garbed rider. Ahead, where a street intersects the highway, there is a checkpoint. A group of six samurai bushi in full o-yoroi armor stand before the bridge, one of them mounted and in the more ornate armor of an officer. Ten armored ashigaru with yari and naginata stand beside him. All watch the procession with interest. The officer commands, Meet and escort. The samurai and ashigaru proceed toward the group, but the mounted officer stays behind and observes.

The kuge rides proudly, head slightly back, chin up. When the soldiers approach, he stops Omi's horse. The ashigaru bow crisply and return to upright, followed by the samurai. It seems a strange variation of decorum. The on-guard heimin soldiers wouldn't be expected to prostrate themselves like peasants in this situation. But the bowing in sequence was odd. Perhaps the bushi didn't want all heads down and off guard at the same time? The kuge seems to consider and appraise this for a moment, then quickly speaks in formal court Nipponese. I am Fujiwara no Sanetoshi, son of the Emperor's Lieutenant Minister of the Buddhist Institutions and their Properties Fujiwara no Kunihiko. I have come to visit and speak with the Takeda daimyo. They samurai seem keen on observing the kuge's mouth as he speaks. And it seems that the kuge notices that and is equally keen on revealing that his teeth are indeed dyed black, according to the fashion of the kuge. The samurai bow again, followed by the ashigaru. The officer says in formal Nipponese, Fujiwara no Sanetoshi-sama, we will escort you to an official who will arrange that and your accommodations. I’m sorry, please wait a moment.

He turns to Omi and Kentaro. Why do you wear o-yoroi and carry dai-kyu like brigands? You surely know that the law does not allow it. Assuming that Omi presents his pass. I see. This is permission to wear o-yoroi and carry strung dai-kyu while protecting the kuge. But you are no longer protecting the kuge. The Takeda clan is. You cannot enter Kofu in o-yoroi. You must take it off immediately, right here. Or depart the city. The samurai bushi all scowl at Omi and Kentaro, poised to cut them down if needed. The ashigaru are alert and shift their grips on their yari and naginata. The kuge observes from horseback, but says nothing.

Hiroshi, Ito, Kentaro and Omi (the bushi) get 3 On for being seen escorting the kuge into Kofu. (This is from the Honor Bound module). Please mark your sheets.
Omi can retcon not showing his pass, if you prefer.

Haruto introduces himself humbly to the officer, not subject to censure for armor, at least. "I am Takeda no Haruto, herald for the Kuge, and have promised to accompany him to introduce him to my family," he also indicates the horse he leads, "it is my honor to ensure the Kuge's goods are transported as well, unless you wish to hire porters."

Kentaro blanches under the initial rebuke, but finds courage behind Omi's firm words. He mirrors Omi's stalwart stance. "I am the Kuge's yojimbo," the thick, muscled man rumbles, "and am his to command."

A few heimin townspeople have arrived and watch the scene from the fringes. The samurai, ashigaru and kuge block their way along street as they go about their business, and they dare not pass through. Others further up and down the street stop what they're doing to watch the encounter, but they don't approach.

The mounted kuge says, You are dismissed, herald, bushi-san-tachi.* He dismounts from Omi's horse and hands the reins to the nearest samurai. He makes formal gestures of adjusting the lapels of his robe. It seems that a set thing for kuge to do. After some hesitation, he says, Well done. Thank you for your hard work. It seems that he even glances to Taisho and Akemi, 10 paces away to the rear.

The samurai captain gestures to the ashigaru. Take Fujiwara no Sanetoshi-sama's property. Two of them hand their yari to their comrades, step forward, and untie the trunk from Haruto's horse. They place the carrying beam on their shoulders and trot to the rear. The samurai with Omi's horse leads it to him, then returns to his place.

The officer says, Takeda no Haruto, you are discharged from your duty to the o-kuge-sama. You may send a request for a meeting between him and your family to the castle. His tone with Omi and Kentaro is now more formal and respectful. Former yojimbo, you are also discharged from your duties to the o-kuge-sama. If you wish to enter the city, you must doff your o-yoroi and unstring your kyu. Or you may continue in some other direction. The choice is yours.

*I'll mention again that -tachi is for plural, so he means all of the bushi. (Not a Japanese grammar lesson, it's just that if he just said "bushi" we wouldn't know whom he's addressing).

This a sandbox game, the party isn't forced to enter Kofu. If the party is interested in studying to improve skills (either now or later), Kofu is a good place for that. But the party can head back the way the came toward Shinano and do the traditional "listen for rumors" in villages or on the road. If the want to make a pilgrimage to Mt. Fuji for On, the only convenient way is through Kofu. Otherwise it would be a hard slog through the mountains to bypass the city. Which could be interesting, because venturing into the mountains anywhere is likely to generate encounters of the beastly or monstrous kind. But I don't know how profitable they would be in terms of loot. If the PCs want to split into different groups (e.g. some entering Kofu and some not), we can run separate threads for each. Just want to mention all options.

I am not clear on the options.

We strip here on the road and lose On. (How much?)
We leave(?) And don't.

Can we go to a nearby stream and wash up, returning redressed?

What's the nearest place "elsewhere" and stay then return?
Do we have time to make it that far before dark?

Ronin Kentaro would lose 1 On for doffing armor here. Samurai Omi would lose 2 On. These would be subtracted from the 3 On you got for escorting the kuge.

It's just before dusk now. You both have horses, so you could be back at the inn where you stayed last night in 2 hours. (That would mean splitting the party, of course. If everyone goes, it would be an 8-hour one-way trip). A 4-hour round trip, so back at Kofu around 9:00 PM. That would mean nighttime travel, which no honest person wants to do, and which you haven't done so far.

Or you could ride 15 minutes or so, trespass crossing some rice fields to the forest of a mountainside, and take off armor there. Or just travel around half and hour, wait for dark, change by the road, and take a chance that no one comes along the highway. Getting down to AC 3 would take a little more than a minute, by the donning armor rules. Based on the traffic rate you've seen on the highway, the chances of someone coming along in that minute are maybe 1 in 20. But at night, who knows. Probably less, unless it's someone being furtive or a non-human.

Is there any other game (except maybe Hello Kitty Online) where changing a PC's clothes is such a big deal?

So what would historical or fictional bushi done in a situation like this? Presumably our PCs are aware of the issue.

I think they would have done anything to avoid taking off their armor in public in front of strangers. It would probably be something that's unthinkable and just not done.

Kentaro provides the correct respectful bows to the samurai captain, remounting his horse and watching as the Kuge departs. He pats Tafu on the side of his neck, contemplating the city gate and the guards before him. His duty is discharged... he has no further goal here. He has a pouch of gold which will feed him for a decade if he returns to the mountains, stories far beyond those of his village which he can cherish memories of into his old age. He caught the bandit and would have other work from the Matsumoto in time. He misses the mountains, his simple life that has been all he's known.

But there is war coming here. There is change on the air, like the loamy smell before a mountain storm. His grandfather's voice whispers to him... he can do more. His grandfather wouldn't go home and sit by the fire, hunting bandits for a lord who treats him as with little more than smirk. He has served a Kuge noble as yojimbo.... but then again, that noble has no more use for him. Who will he serve?

He resolves to enter the city. He doesn't need ten years worth of rice... he can stay a bit longer. Learn a bit more.

He turns his horse from the gate, debating whether to return all the way to the last inn or go crosscountry to a simple stream. The latter is more his way, but he feels out of place with everything here... he has never seen a place so... occupied. It feels like there's people everywhere, always watching. He considers finding a stream but, well, he's already cleaner than he's ever been, actually. He's bathed three nights in a row!

He looks to Omi, watching for his choice as the more experienced, as the samurai.

(He won't cause embarassment by stripping here. He's more inclined to go find a stream or private place to change, but will follow Omi's lead if Omi doesn't send him away. He's tacitly seeking leadership.)

Haruto gets his own supplies from his horse, writing the letters requested in exquisite hand. He sends them with the samurai captain. He then enters the city, finding an inn. He will stay together with the others if possible, inviting them with him and helping as a guide.

Omi watches the kuge leave. He sits astride his newly returned horse considering options. He would like to enter the city and find someone he can study with, he also is loathe, for some odd reason to leave Ito and particularly the younger bushi. After a few minutes of consideration he says, I will find a stream to wash the dust off in, then I will return to enter the city. Perhaps such companionship as we have shared will loan itself to shared accomodations?

Ito wonders why Omi is making such a statement? Surely Omi and Ito do not like one another. Respect perhaps? In any event Ito lspeaks to Kentaro I too will seek a stream to clean the dust of the road off. Mayhap we should remain together? I can use some training in bushi arts.

Akemi says, I asked you bushi-san and Taisho-san if I could travel with you to Kofu. But now that we're here, I have no acquaintances and no destination. If you don't mind, I'd like to stay with the group as you go to the stream and return to the city. I apologize for burdening you with this request.

I realize that Akemi's question was to the group, and people may not want to make a decision for the whole group. Let's say that the convention in Nippon in the situation is to say "I no objection" or "I have an objection," as a minimum. PCs can say more if they want, of course.

Kentaro assents to Akemi immediately and then invites her to stay with them in the city as well. "I... I enjoy your company," he blushes.

Haruto has no objections, being new and only faintly acquainted with her.
