May 15th 1066.

The intrepid 'Raiders of the lost amps' set off once again, following ranger Tamson down the westward trail to the Barrow Mounds, some ten miles and six hours trek away.

Included in the group are Savant and Dalin who walk abreast of mercenerary warrior and mage, Redruth and Sundance. Bringing up the rear is Eamoon who leads a mule, Eeyore that bears the expedition packs and supplies.

You have rations and fresh water canteens for a couple of days, ropes, torches, a lantern and a dozen flasks of oil, iron bear clamps, a hammer and pick for excavation and strapped across its back on a large bamboo frame, a two-piece stable doors model design portal and iron attachments to secure into the Potter's Barrow entrance.

You leave the security of the patrolled forest and start trekking into the misty moor. An hour along and the mule whinnies though you see no apparent danger about. Eamoon pulls on her reins but she is obstinate and refuses to budge.

It is eerie and silent, even the croaking frogs and buzzing gnats are stilled. Then a twig or branch snaps loudly.

actions and a d6 roll from you both please.

Savant

Savant, standing in the lead by Tamson, brings his bow to bear and adjusts his quiver. He's feeling more secure in his new chain, though he does miss the flavor of his old Elven design. This crew also seems hardier. Tamson and Dalin have good teamwork and a great feel. Sundance has proven herself, and the two additions with mule seem solid.

But he was hoping that maybe, just maybe, they could make it to the damn barrows without running into trouble. Do you have to pay mercenaries that die? It seemed like it.

Truly, this trail is fucking perilous.

Dalin loads his crossbow and has it in hand as he paces around near the mule and does a bit of a perimeter check trying to stay very alert. "I don't like it Savant, it's too quiet." he says in low tones while still being as alert as the dwarf can manage.

Is it better to roll low or high on the d6 for initiative?

if memory serves me correctly lower is better for initiative. Now if it was for surprise I think lower is bad usually 1-2 = you are surprised I think.

From House Rules thread:
Initiative:
During encounters I will roll initiative for any NPC's or critters and ask that the first person posting rolls a Team initiative roll. The higher of the [1d6] scores will act first in my narratives. If scores are tied, I will rule on simultaneous actions with an advantage going to variables such as dexterity bonus, weapon speed factors and weapon reach or length.

Barrow Moor trek to the Mounds

May 15th 1066.

Visibility: poor, mist reduces vision to 60'ft radius. Lanterns held by Eamoon & Sundance.

The sudden crack of a large branch snapping, perhaps it was a bone? alerts the group. Eeyore sensing some danger ahead, pulls on the reins when encouraged forward. Lanterns are dimmed, arrows nocked, scouts prod ahead.

After a few yards, it seems the danger must be hiding from your presence rather than lurking to pounce, certainly the only infravisual sources of heat come from the warm bloodied party. Then looming close by, moving slowly either side of you appear a trio of humanoid like figures though they are oddly shaped. Their arms and legs are thin, twiggy appendages and they look gaunt with large oversized sun hats. Shadows and mist make discernment difficult. Light is raised and you discern quite well though wish you had not.

The figures, one a dwarven sized figure with a shaggy frill of tendril like beard, the others tall human sized though certainly not human in appearance.

The figures lurch towards you, belching a cloud of fetid gas and straining to reach out to touch you. Savant and Redruth both walk into a cloud of choking, irritating spores that sting your skin and feel nauseous to your stomachs.

make a save vs poison/paralysis please.

actions & rolls.

Dalin startled briefly takes aim with his crossbow and fires at the nearest fungi-creature "thing". "Well shave my beard what in the hell is that?" blurts out as he aims and fires.

Barrow Moor trek to the Mounds

May 15th 1066.

Visibility: poor, mist reduces vision to 60'ft radius. Lanterns held by Eamoon & Sundance.

The group encounter a trio of strange skeletal mushroom men, but these are certainly no funguys. Belching spores that poison and debilitate some of the party, the monstrous humanoids reach out to grab the party. Acting quicker, the young ranger looses a volley of arrows into one critter, little eruptions of puff and spores spurt out as the barbs impale the creature in the torso. Eamoon rushes to stab at the wounded funguy, slicing his sword through the creature's ribcage as it falls to the ground, unmoving. -10hp, dead. Erupting spores and gore splatter his clothes. He immediately starts to choke from the noxious substances that cloud around him but a life spent cleaning horse muck from stables has given him a strong constitution and resistance to the nausea.

Sundance invokes a spell that ignites a hood of flame that surrounding the head of one creature that writhes in silent agony. -4 hp

Redruth along with Savant both fall victim to the choking poison and failing saves, begin to choke for breath, gag on nauseous induced vomit and wipe streaming tears from their eyes.

Dalin aims his powerful crossbow but the bolt misses his opponent.

The burning skeleton-mushroom and the uninjured one are drawn to the affected party members and try to embrace them in skeletal grasps. The elf gets hammered by a boney limb, -2hp

next actions please

for those who fall poison saving throws, I refer you to the House Rules section on Poison and Paralysis mechanics, so that depending on further Constitution saves, you can continue to act for a few rounds while the poison takes effect.

So Savant, make a Constitution check, succeed you may act, fail and drop prone to the floor

Light Crossbow [1d20]=6 to hit, [2d4]=6 dmg

Barrow Moor trek to the Mounds

May 15th 1066.

Visibility: poor, mist reduces vision to 60'ft radius. Lanterns held by Eamoon & Sundance.

The skeletal fungi men, an abomination spawned from the ill fated deaths of adventurers on the Moor, look to claim more living compost for the necrotic bacteria. Attacking the prone figures in deathly embraces, both Redruth, -7hp and Savant -4hp suffer more rib crushing, cranium bludgeoning and lung constricting damage.

Victims to the poison and the Fungicides trying to murder them, they can do nothing but hope salvation comes

Dalin misses, Tamson puts another two arrows into the creatures. It billows more spores from the shafts, staggers a few feet then collapsed to the floor; a withered stalk and inky gill umbrella like cup stained with rotten flecks of the corpse it inhabits.

Eamoon cannot hit the second blazing creature. Sundance masks up and grabs Savant by the boot heels and pulls him from the reach of the last figure.

initiative and actions Dalin please

Dalin unfortunately too busy to mask up....reloads and fires at the closest target. "We should get the hell out of here."

Tamson looses another volley of arrows as Eamoon pulls Redruth out from the belching, spore erupting skeleton-mushroomman.

His arrows, like the bolt of Dalin go wide of the mark. It is left to Sundance who adds more flames to the creature. It withers and cooks, a fetid burned smell as new tongues of fire envelope the creature. Flailing and burning, it wordlessly screams, puffing spores that sizzle like embers in the wind. It falls over in the boggy terrain. Eeyore brays noisily, the only sound you hear.

Conditions: Redruth -7hp, Savant -6hp

The poison begins to take effect upon the two victims who turn blue from lack of air and gagging on the breathed in spores.

actions Dalin

The three skeletal humanoids are dead, your comrades are poisoned but not dead.

You don't have a cart.

Ok my mistake I thought it was a mule and a cart or wagon....
Dalin speaking to whatever hired men are still upright. "I have no idea what to do about poison. I'm not a cleric or one familiar with the use of poisons."

May 15th 1066.

After a serious bout of choking and gasping for breath, the duo poisoned by the Fungicides eventually rise unsteady in their feet. Their voices hoarse, breathing more ragged. It is clear that the spores have contaminated them though what actual damage is insidiously working in their system is unclear.

Tamson offers them copious amounts of wine and freshwater to clear their throats.

Sundance goes over to check the Fungicides, poking the two unburnt bodies from a distance. Anyone wanting to check a body closer needs a 3d6 Constitution check.

As well as the poison effect, both of the fighters are seriously injured, so you need to consider your next moves carefully and chat through the implications of continuing forward to explore the Barrows or look at other options to resolve your health conditions.

chat here between you and actions please.
