Because of the time boundary I'm focusing on a couple of things, leaving the rest vague, and keeping it open for folks who like Star Trek but may not know Traveller.

I missed this earlier, and had to research Operations Branch. In this game it would be a fairly active role, much more than just Communications.

Count me in if there's a spare spot. Vulcan weapons officer or chief weapons officer.

The tactical officer or weapons officer is responsible for coordinating the operation of a starship's weapons and defensive systems.
Chief tactical officer was a senior position for Starfleet officers on board starships and starbases. Tactical officers were in charge of tactical operations, including weapons and shields, and ship's security.
The chief tactical officer was often, but not always, also the chief of security.

On a really funny note, John Scalzi wrote "Redshirts". I gave my copy away, and need another. One of the few books that made me laugh.

Just don't make my char beam down to any planets. As long as he stays on the ship, he should be safe. In fact, he penciled this in on his job description: "Travel not required. Stays on ship, does not beam down to planets with other redshirts."
