The walk through Goblintown proves interesting. Most of the town is going on about their business as if there wasn't a deadly Orc attack only an hour ago. The streets are packed with growling, snapping, and, yes, laughing Goblins hawking their wares, plying their trades, and generally living life. You have to keep your hands on your purses as you go as you feel more than one attempt at the old "bump and grab" along the way. Luckily, none are successful and you arrive at the southern outskirts of the town with all your belongings.

The encampment is a large flat circle of packed earth and the caravan has formed a laager in its center. The cattle of the settlers are pinned inside the circle, as are the horses, and children. Master Ross, on his horse, is riding around t he laager keeping watch. Several men and women are scattered around the outside of the lagger armed with crossbows and spears. They all seem to relax a bit when they see you approaching.

"How did it go?" asks Ross leaning down in his saddle to talk to you.

Valerin says "It went well. We're all still alive and a bunch of orcs aren't, including an officer of some sort...big and nasty anyway..." He absently rubs his chest. "The King was appropriately grateful, and only half-heartedly tried haggling us down. More for form than anything else, I expect. We are to collect considerable gold at the palace. There was mention of you meeting with him this evening; we thought to accompany you at least to the palace to collect, as I expect we'll be decamping tomorrow?""

Then we get to make the run back through town with a sizeable fortune on our persons...at night. Whee!

Callista also fastidiously tidies up her appearance, despite not looking in any way dirty or disheveled in the first place. She seems to pay special attention to her very long, black hair, taking the considerable amount of time to comb it out until it looks just about perfect.

Re: (004) Raid on Goblintown

#115 Post by Eris »

It appears my long post was eaten by the internet because it isn't here! :( Sigh! I'll have to try to reconstruct it...

Everyone eats a light meal in the late afternoon and the sun set over the laager a party of 8 uniformed Goblins marches up.

"They are here to escort me to the Palace." say Ross, "Come along."

The Goblin escort surrounds you as you walk into the town keeping the locals at bay as you walk through the still very busy streets. It is not yet dark, but it will be in a few minutes. You don't see any kind of street lighting, so these streets are going to be pitch black before long and anybody that doesn't have dark vision is going to need a light source.

This part of the town is a bit nicer than the part you were in earlier. The buildings are all adobe brick of one or two story. Here most of the buildings have smooth painted walls with colorful, perhaps to you eye, garish designs. Most have flat roofs, but a few have peaked roofs with clay tiles of various colors. You are being escorted toward a large building in the center of the settlement.

King Bosco's "Palace" is a compound surrounded by a mud brick wall a good 8 feet high. When you pass through the guarded gates into the compound itself, you see the main building is a large three story building...the largest in the town. The palace's construction is much like those you passed on your way here built of adobe and with a flat roof, but this one is larger, taller, has more windows...some even appear to have glass in them...and there are four steps leading up to large double doors at the entrance.

Leonis is standing at the open doors and welcomes you saying, "Well! Ross the news we got that you were roasting on a spit seems to have been untrue. That is not a bad thing!"

With a slight frown he looks at the rest of you and says, "But you didn't need to bring your heroes, Ross. The Great Bosco would have seen your throat was not slit as you returned to your wagons tonight."

Ross chuckles saying, "Seeing what went on here today I thought bringing along some guards would be prudent. Besides..."

Leonis finishes for him, "Besides, they are here for their reward, yes?"

"The Feast of the Fallen has already begun, Ross." says Leonis as he escorts you inside the building, "You will join His Majesty in the festivities, will your employees also join in the feasting?"

"No, they are ordered to remain sober and on guard." Ross says looking at you with a wink, "They will not partake of the fallen."

"A shame seeing as they felled the main course." Leonis says as he escorts you down a short hall toward glass paned double doors at it's end.

The corridor is whitewashed and has several tallow candles burning in wall sconces giving it light. There are black streaks on the white walls where the burned grease from the candles has collected. It stinks in here. There are no doors along the walls of the corridor here, but you can see small openings at regular spaces along it near the ceiling on both sides.

Leonis pauses at the glass paned double doors. Through the glass you can see an inner courtyard. You can see green shrubs, a pair of small trees, and a water fountain. Across the courtyard you can see an overhang that provides shade to part of the area and two levels of rooms with walkways and balconies overlooking the courtyard. You hear loud banging and clanging through the doors...music?...cacophony to your ears. There are also loud voices, caterwauling in time to the banging, music combined with cackling laughter and loud shouts, all in the harsh language of goblinoids. Leonis opens the doors and steps inside followed by Ross. Leonis turns to his right, stops and bows as does Ross.

"Master Ross to see the King!" Leonis announces and Ross disappears to the right.

From the doorway you can see that over on the right side of the inner courtyard there is a lot of activity. Drawing your attention first is the Orc on a spit roasting over a fire. Cooks are carving off meat to put on platters that serves are taking to a long carpet placed on a tiled floor. Along the carpet are bowls and platters all being eaten from by a group of Goblins seated behind the carpet with their backs against the inner wall.

Beyond the roasting Orc you can see the source of the cacophony and caterwauling. A group of Goblins are there banging on cymbals and drums while a troop of mostly naked Goblin females are dancing around and singing.

Leonis turns to you and says, "Come along and I'll get your coin. I want to get back to the feast before all the good meat is gone."

Valerin smiles, and bows to Leonis "Certainly, Minister"

Practical question...just how much does 480 GP weigh? I'm always amused by tv shows and films showing folks nonchalantly loading up their vehicles, horses or backpacks with absurdly large numbers of gold coins and bars

OOC: I'm going with 5e's 50 coins (of any type) to a pound. So you can get overloaded quick if you have all your wealth in silver and copper. :)
In your case, 480/50 = 9.6 pounds

Volume is a different matter. :) I did a little rounding, so... coins are ~1/16 (give or take a bit) of an inch by:
  • Copper: 1.2”
  • Silver: 1.0”
  • Electrum: 0.8”
  • Gold: 0.75”
  • Platinum: 0.5”
in diameter.

The only coin that would be noticeably different than 1/16" thick is Platinum, it's more like 1/14" thick.

The gp is pretty close to a 1/4 oz gold bullion coin in weight, so I'd presume it's about the same dimensions, too.
