Cycle 1063 (Winter): Day 14: Dancer (group)

Cycle 1063 (Winter): Day 14: Shift 1 [Antley Knob Light]
Jacques Bonnet, Remy Hernandez, Mercutio Routledge, Samuel Linkletter, Josephine Baxter-Smith, Nathaniel

As your host, Lawrence Matthews, poured the cups of tea, exchanged formal introductions, engaged in the pleasantries expected of any but the lowest social strata in Britannia society, he listened to your sense of urgency with calm indifference. At first, you suspected that Nathaniel had overstated his acquaintance with Lawrence, but you soon accepted that objective impartiality was an innate trait of Mr Matthews. You were in a hurry, but Lawrence was going to take his time no matter what.

Resolved to the inevitable, word was sent to Jo to shut down the boilers and join you. Antley Knob Light was a source of information … both good and bad.

First the good news. Every KEEPER, the TAS term for the Mechanic-Scholar that operated a Communication Light, both maintained a general library and was an expert in some field of study. Antley Knob had a KEEPER and an ASSISTANT KEEPER. Lawrence Matthews (age 263 cycles) was a Scholar in the general study of Social Sciences with a specialization in Commerce, communications, and transport. He would make an interesting and useful contact and person to know in the future, but his library would be more useful in the immediate quest for maps to coordinates than his knowledge. In a slightly risqué turn of events, Lawrence was engaged to his much younger female assistant keeper. Candace Buchannon (age 208 cycles) was a Scholar in the general study of Geography and history, which made her an expert on exactly what you were looking for … information on maps and map coordinates.

Now for the bad news. The TAS is not charitable or egalitarian; it exists to serve ITS INTERESTS and those of its MEMBERS. Lawrence was no longer part of the ‘Society’ and for a lifetime Society Man like Lawrence, had somewhat betrayed his oath and duty. Most of your party was clearly not ‘cut from the right cloth’ as the SOC conscious Britannia Society would put it. Jacques was a Gentleman and a Nobleman, even if not a TAS member, and THAT is what interested Lawrence enough to assist you all. The cooperation of the TAS would cost more than money, it would cost a quid pro quo of information.

Lawrence cared nothing about your quest and pried for no secrets of what you wanted at those coordinates. He was fascinated with what brought people with such diverse backgrounds together to form a common commercial venture. Lawrence will question each and every member about how they met, why they formed a social group and what your individual and collective commercial plans are. The process takes all of shift 1. Then Candice will provide you with the information on the coordinates and sell you a general navigation map to the location.

Jacques can decide for the group if you wish to delay 8 hours to answer questions, or choose to sail without a map and trust the Navigator to “dead reckon” a course to the coordinates. It just makes the task a little harder so it may increase the time to find it.

Assuming that you stay 8 hours: Each party member must decide for themself if they have any questions for either Lawrence or Candice and if they will make any attempt to befriend them. You can do nothing and they will remain like a shop clerk that waited on you once (no relationship). You have the option to attempt to make an ally or enemy by interacting and generating a reaction.
1 year = 9 cycles, so if anyone cares to convert ages from cycles back into more meaningful terms … divide the age in cycles by 9 to obtain an age in years.

As a handy guide to ages:
100 cycles = 11 year old adolescent
200 cycles = 22 year old young adult … an apprentice learning and growing in his craft/trade.
300 cycles = 33 year old adult … age a man starts a family and a woman should be married.
400 cycles = 44 year old … make a name for yourself.
500 cycles = 56 years old … made your mark and thinking about your legacy.
600 cycles = 67 years old … retired / golden years / setting affairs in order.
700 cycles = 78 years old … approximate average life expectancy.

Nathaniel

Confident he could sail under the stars, he still thinks additional knowledge from experienced men will not drag an anchor to our travels. The time spent here could shorten a sea journey by more hours than we invest.

The rough explorer, himself also falling from the TAS graces like Lawrence, talks 'shop' with him. If he can he will bring a bottle, some wine to share over talk. Specifically Nathaniel is interested in the commerce moving between the Britannic and Gauloise communities, especially since peace treaties had been brokered. He would be certain of various smuggling activities going in to border communities and lesser identified cargo perhaps listed as 'industrial spares', 'agricultural implements' and the like might actually cover for weapons.

He would like to get to peruse any files and customs books that are kept as open records. Making note of other craft and their supposed cargo in the region over the last month.

Mercutio Routledge sips his tea and makes his best play at being a "gentleman." But he can't remember whether to hold his pinky out, or if that's seen as false airs these days. It's so hard to keep track of etiquette. The great thing about machines and injured patients is they generally don't give a damn—ah, there's one of those uncouth words again—about who in the blazes his parents were. Oh, well. At least a proper gentleman like Lawrence is still bound by custom to call Mercutio "Doctor"—and if Mercutio detects a hint of irony in his host's voice, well, maybe that's just the Doctor's imagination.

Tending the ship's engine—now that was a good time. He didn't spend many hours in the engine room during his short, ill-fated time in the Navy, but now he sees the appeal. In fact, he even has a few ideas about how the entire mechanism could be improved. Thus do his thoughts drift from matters at hand.

The tea seems good, anyway. He wonders where it's from.

Nathaniel strikes up a conversation with Lawrence that goes very well. Lawrence was initially rather stiff and formal, eventually admitting that he had regarded you with some suspicion based upon your reputation. Lawrence was clearly a product of Britannia society with all of the innate preconceptions based on the rigid social caste that permeated Britannia. It was a wonder how he survived in the wilds of New Britannia with his old-world prejudices.

Fortunately, your shared interests and a natural “click” of personalities overcame the gap in your social status and Nathaniel and Lawrence actually formed a budding friendship. With respect to your questions, Lawrence was more of an academic than a clerk … dealing in forecasts and trends and social forces that shaped markets. What he did share was more of a statement of ignorance and a request for information. You were venturing into a ‘no-mans-land’ too far from any significant population centers to allow the TAS to gather much information. That made it EXACTLY the sort of place where the activities that you were interested in would be likely to occur.

Lawrence advised you to keep your eyes and ears open as you travelled NW and urged you to report back any snippets of information that you might gain on your travels. The TAS remembers it friends and those to whom it is indebted. Official cargo seldom passed directly from New Britannia to the French Republic. The dominant trade routes passed through the German Federation to the north and around New Britannia.

Mercutio Routledge enjoyed the tea more than the conversation and remembered why he had left the rigid social hierarchy of Britannia for a little breathing room in the New Britannia frontier. Lawrence imports the tea from the City of Britannia … “The only place where one can get a proper blend.”

Your obligation to Lawrence met, Candace Buchannon was happy to help you with your map needs. There were three TAS 100km Hex maps that provided general information on the area covered by your journey (priced at Cr 100 each).

The Gwynedd Hex map covered the present hex and revealed the limits of the reef zone and the beginning of the deep-water zone (where a ship could travel faster without fear of hidden reefs). There were numerous islands and several major reefs identified, with the Village of Gwynedd being the only identified population center in the Hex. TAS Maps only identify settlements with a population greater than 500 people.

Hex 46N-25W was NW of the Gwynedd Hex, but the map was completely blank. Candace explained that TAS had conducted an exploration survey on the hex, but this particular hex is 100% deep water with no identifiable islands, reefs or settlements greater than 500 people. You could either skip the map since it contains no information, or purchase a copy if you wanted to chart positions and any minor settlements you encountered. The price is fixed at Cr 100 by TAS and not negotiable. Candace is indifferent about whether you purchase it or not.

Hex 467N-26W was NW of the 46N-25W Hex, and contained the coordinates to which you were heading. Candace explained that the hex contained no major population centers, so TAS had little up to date data on this remote region, however the exploration survey revealed several major reefs within this hex. Some of these reefs could be above the water at low tide, so you should keep an accurate log of your position and exercise caution when approaching one of the reefs (to avoid sinking). Your specific coordinates of interest are very close to “Shepherds Reef” … one of a string of 6 reefs forming a 40 km line.

Cycle 1063 (Winter): Day 14: Shift 2: 2 Bells [Hemisphere Dancer: 5 km W of Antley Knob Light]
Jacques Bonnet, Remy Hernandez, Mercutio Routledge, Samuel Linkletter, Josephine Baxter-Smith, Nathaniel

With the aid of the Gwynedd Hex map and 2.5 hours at quarter speed, the Hemisphere Dancer clears the reefs and reaches deep water. The ship changes heading to due N and sets out at cruising speed (10 kph) to clear a few outlier reefs shown on the map. At 4 bells, the ship has crossed over into Hex 46N-25W and changes course again to the NW … deep water from here to your destination.

Mercutio Routledge is relived to return to the ship's engine room. Unlikely though it may seem, he likes the air better here—oily and smelly though it may be. And it's a great chance to learn. He finds the machinery fascinating. The large scale particularly captures his attention; he can't help comparing the huge boilers, valves, pistons, turbines, and gears to the delicate machinery (or human anatomy) he's more used to working with—so few of them respond well to a wack on the side with a spanner! He asks Jo to explain every detail of how it works, with special attention to her repairs and modifications. When he feels he has a suitable understanding of the mechanisms, he even asks for her thoughts about a few ideas of his own on how the machinery might be improved somewhat.

Jo Replacing my previous post

Jo is more than happy to discuss mechanics with Mercutio. She argues, good-naturedly, with every idea he has about modifications and upgrades, and on mutiple occasions asks for sketches to clarify details.
Jo seems.. different in the engine room. With black muck under her fingernails and a smudge of soot on her forehead, she's somehow more relaxed and cheerful- possibly even flirty. The engine room is obviously her true home.

Cycle 1063 (Winter): Day 14: Shift 2: 6 Bells [Hemisphere Dancer: Hex 46N-25W]
Jacques Bonnet, Remy Hernandez, Mercutio Routledge, Samuel Linkletter, Josephine Baxter-Smith, Nathaniel

‘Dancer’ was steaming WNW with the glow of the eastern horizon behind. The scattered cloud cover left plenty of stars visible to accurately plot your position. Out past the reefs, in the open water, a Moderate Breeze (24 kph) from the west threw two and a half meter waves at the ship that slowed your forward progress to just over 5 kph as the ship was forced to climb over one wave after another. Just another day on the open water.

Inside the cabin, the 50 F ocean made it cold, but not freezing, and a hot mug near a warm stove made those safe inside comfortable enough. At 6 bells, the watch spotted lights more than 5 kilometers ahead in the distance. Your course was taking you within a couple kilometers of a small fleet. The decision had to be made to hold steady and pass by (about 2 km separation), or to change course to intercept and dock with the fleet to talk with them, or to steer a wider course around them and increase the separation.

If anyone has a “telescope/spyglass”:
It appears to be a small fishing fleet belonging to an extended family:
There are three (3) fishing boats and three (3) agricultural barges.
Nathaniel would estimate a fleet of this size to support fewer than 20 people.
You will either pass them or make contact by around 7 bells (in 1 hour).

"I do know the basics of raw mechanics, I am more gifted with crafting and shipbuilding but I can find my way around cogs and wheels if needed." he says, happy to help out in different scenes where necessary. It is good to understand all the points, strengths and weaknesses in the vessel he is on though he has limited specialisms. Still he can use a torque wrench and hammer.

Nathaniel: mechanics skill check (0 metal, stone) + 1 Edu [2d6+1]=9+1=10

When the fleet come in to view he adds his counsel.

"Do they have anything we need in trade? Probably not. And I wouldn't trust that a clan of corsairs and marine vagabonds are not masquerading beneath the merchant flags they fly.

Let's keep moving, perhaps with a bit more speed if we can. They can't fail to have noticed us but we should discourage any pursuit or encounter."

Agreed. We should not seek out trouble- at least until there is no choice. I will make sure the engines are ready for full speed at a moment's notice.

Cycle 1063 (Winter): Day 14: Shift 3: 8 Bells [Hex 46N-25W: 33 km WNW of Gwynedd]
Jacques Bonnet, Remy Hernandez, Mercutio Routledge, Samuel Linkletter, Josephine Baxter-Smith, Nathaniel

The Dancer passed the small family fishing fleet without incident and it disappeared over the horizon shortly before 8 bells sounded the change of shift. Nathanial, the ship’s navigator, calculated your position at 33 km WNW of Gwynedd with approximately 120 km to your destination and an average speed of 5.2 kph. Jacques at the helm, recorded the information in the ship’s log.

Jacques has been at the helm and Josephine at the boiler for 8 hours … who will relieve the “pilot” and “engineer” for the next shift?

At 4 bells (mid shift), you spotted the lights of another fishing fleet 5 km ahead. On your present course, you would pass at a distance of about 1 km. Unless the group states otherwise, I will assume that you pass by all future fleet encounters without either stopping to visit or delaying your trip with a detour ... unless the party announces otherwise.

If anyone has a “telescope/spyglass”:
It appears to be fishing community:
There are ten (10) small fishing boats, over two hundred (200+) agricultural barges and seven (7) larger ships. Nathaniel would estimate a fleet of this size to support a community of about 200 people.

I am glad to see you, Mercutio. Please keep a close eye on the forward piston linkage.
I thought I heard some excessive vibration from it. I shall be in my cabin.

"Is there any interest in socialising with this fleet? It would seem quite an organised community, every family has its barge and some larger vessels. Deep sea miners? Trawlers?"

Within the party, do we have any personal needs that could be addressed like medical? Can we source extra fuel here? How are we funding this boat presently? Do we have armaments in board?

No spyglass here, and no reason to retro one for Linkletter, he has no skills that he would expect to have taken a position on the ship that would justify a spyglass.

Jacques

"Curse my foolishness. I only assumed that the ship would have a spyglass with it. Carrying one around seemed like an unnecessary burden." Jacques tries to squint and spot the fleet ahead.

"Perhaps we should stop and trade for one? What do you all say?" He yawns and looks around. "We'll get within hailing distance and keep our guard up."
