Vann Hector takes a seat, getting a stack of chips and a slim, svelte wench to massage weary shoulders and coo nonsense in his ears.
The game is poker, a game of chance and bluff. You might do ok or bust out early. Give me a [4d6] Charisma check to see how you fare.
As far as Cockfighting, there is the midnight challenge and tonight, for extra entertainment, some fine leghorns and plumed bantams are going to be strutting their stuff.
For now, you try to be 'cock of the green baize'.
Other players include local merchants and adventurers. Those fresh from the Barrow Mounds leverage a few shiny trinkets or uncut gems to wager. One, a cleric who must be out of luck and piety pitches his holy symbol. The crown symbol on the mountain peak, a Crommite sigil has a single blue gem that glints with light though the iron symbol is rusty and dull, much like the cleric who tosses it aside. "It was as though He was silent. The forces of darkness retreated not, relentless and ravenous." he tells a tale of a Barrow Mound raid that went awry.
Another, an elf with, a heavy bandage around his throat that covers a wound which any deeper may well have half decapitated him, adds in a locket. It is on a slim gold chain and flipped open reveals a small silvered mirror. "Worth as much as your stack. If I go All-in and lose, it may be yours."
Cards dealt and many low stake hands played. Over a couple of hours you learn a couple of testimonies relating to explorations.
As far as 'other concerns', the favoured escort is pointed out and you can slip your bonus gem stone to the floosie unseen with a pickpocket to keep payments discreet. (Though it is not out of the ordinary for escorts to be tipped for whatever gentleman's pleasure or favour).

I am in the tavern a day after Orgoth so cannot tespond to him.

Seems not on his best poker face. I will ignite the provocations of the 'locket man'. Such trinkets seem quite common and possibly come with some residue leftover from the barrows. He thinks of the haunting ghost of Sister Magdalena. Mirrors reveal more than just a reflection, he doesn't want to add to his many recent curses.
The cleric, despondent and on the grio of loding his faith. I just wonder if he too had encountered 'a gargoyle skull' as the ill-fated Reuben 'of the muttonchops' did. We blessed a mound but it favoured him not. Still I want to encourage the priest and if I can win his jewelled holy symbol, I will try for that and at a convenient point outside of the gambling tables, go to seek him out. You can never have too many clerics, even backsliding ones. Maybe I can return his holy symbol, encourage the man and recruit him for my nrxt endeavours.

Sure, but there is something about the guy I don't like. I am going to risk it, but act with some sleight of hand to gain an advantage. Not that I am one for keeping an ace up my sleeve but producing one on my cut might be nice.

nice, the elf and Blackadder cut the deck, shuffled expertly and with a flourish beforehand before being placed face down on the table. There is little room to touch the deck beforehand so slipping an Ace in is not possible unless you have one matching card up your sleeve which you do not.
The man takes first cut, deciding that twenty gold might be won on the twentieth card and turns over a Jack of Clubs, a picture card but not the highest. Vann calculates the odds of drawing higher, better than one in four.
I went to random.org to shuffle a random deck which is time-stamped prior to this post. Pick which card, from 21 through to 52 that you draw. I will publish the draw and you can collect or pay up.

The first grins, turning over a Jack of Clubs, oft associated with murderers or assassins, a dark knave clubbing the unsuspecting, quite appropriate to the shady figure who gambles.
The elf looks, you know the significance of the card and can do with some lady luck. You reach to cut what is left of the card deck, turning over another picture card, a Queen of Hearts. In the brothel, perhaps the most appropriate too.
"Say your prayers with it." the disgruntled man passes the jewelled holy symbol over. Game over, the tables clear, twenty gold down but the medalion up and "a maiden of hearts' around your waist.

I managed to survive yet another adventure or two and make it back to see your smiling face." after a moments' pause he chuckles "I passed along your message to our mutual friend." he says with a hand blocking his mouth from the side so hopefully nobody eavesdrops on the convo. "What do we have for tonight's excitement? Any games? Maybe some of the ladies wish to hang out around ol' diggler?" he smiles and blushes mildly, then laughs again. Not forgetting his manners he introduces Freod "Oh, and where are my manners this is my new buddy Freod. Freod this Perni, owner of this fine establishment."

You can 'talk shop', introducing Froed and share testimony from Bogtown and Ironguard. The 'clan' smuggling and black market racketeer Ness Costner comes up. "Something about him more shifty than usual with rogue types." she says, suggesting that on any Ironguard return you do a bit of snooping and infiltrating of his operations.
As far as local enterprise goes, business is as usual. Adventurers come into the tavern to rest weary souls or spend lucre garnered from Barrow Mound raids.

"Yes, well there was a lot of odd things happening out bogtown way as well as ironguard. You heard about the crazy cults, and folks being turned into trees? Well that's all going on out there as well. And before that my near death experience in Crooked Yew with all sorts of crazy bugbears worshiping a god of disease creating their own cult following there is a lot going on out there that is more than just adventuring out in the borrow moors looking for fortune and fame. With the dealer feeding 'Diggler' first and 'Badger' second, the dwarves bid on their hands. Dalin receiving pocket Kings and the flop providing two pair with nine's but deceiving the other player as it feeds him a second jack to make a lesser comparative pair. The Turn and River provide no knave of spades or diamonds and Dalin cashs out +60gp in profit.
