Helix: The Foul Pheasant
Helix: The Foul Pheasant
The Foul Pheasant
Is located down some alleyways away from the market. The further you travel down the alley the more dingy and run down the area is. The rats are larger, the dog has three legs and the toothless crones wait by red lit doorways to entice the vulnerable to licentiousness.
The tavern is a shifty looking place, sagging beams look to tilt the barn conversion to one side. A brick chimney churns out woodsmoke from the rooftop, covered in grey skate tiles. The windows to the place are rounded in style, behind which candle light lanterns shed flickers of light.
The tavern is run by Pernicious. 'Perni' is a halfling matron, welcoming and effervescent, who swans around with several strings of pearl necklaces and fingers wearing a multiple of gemstone rings. She has a gold toothed smile to greet patrons.
Entering the front door, a gruff bouncer sizes folk up and insists in checking in weapons bar a single sidearm.
The interior of the tavern reinforces the outside perception. A seedy little joint which entices the low life. There is a long bar and several low tables with plush velvet couches set amid secluded corners and sections of the room. The decor is burlesque. Some stairs go to an above floor, whose floorboards, depending on your time of day or night, might might creak rhythmically for short periods.
A couple of green doors lead to private rooms where various cards and dice games are wagered.

Re: The Foul Pheasant
Dalin arrived at the Foul Pheasant seeking more adventure than the Brazen Strumpet offers.
The bouncer takes your 10'ft pole. "No room for that inside. 10" inches yes, but this is way too much." he sniggers and with a penknife marks it too your height. Placing it to one side and putting your equipment in a large Hessian sack to store.
"Easy to understand eh? You fill this sack with your tools and weapons for safe keeping here and you empty your other tools and sack in there.
Enjoy." he opens the door for you.

Dalin does as instructed "Very well." before entering he asks something in the secret languages of the thieves "Is the guild located within?"

The bouncer, 'Rooster' Rogan fills a sack with your stuff giving you a chit to collect it. The sack is stored in a locked cupboard with a multiple of shelves. By the number of sacks, the place already has a number of patrons. He doesn't respond to your guild question, simply shrugging, a kind of 'I don't know what you are talking about'.
You enter the saloon. It is as described, putting on a veneer of poshness and etiquette but underneath is not that upmarket. Smoke from traditional tobacco pipes and tables of fragrant hookah fill the room. Few locals are present. Most of the crowd made up of gambeson wearing adventurers of all races. The atmosphere is relaxed. People come here to let off steam, have a good time, spend some coins and from the creaking above, get some cleavage. A group of men drape on chaisse lounge by a table filled with empty bottles. Another pair of half-elven are locked in quite conversation over a hookah. Some men sit at the bar, chatting amicably with flirty escorts.
Further along a group of dwarves talk in a room beyond your view though the door is ajar.
"Hello dear. A new stranger. Well let us get to know you and you won't be a stranger for long." the barmaid acknowledges you presence. There is not a great range of drinks. It seems whatever is in stock. Ale, stout, mead, whisky, wines.
"The first is free. We want to welcome guests after all." a glass is poured and slides down the tavern bar to test half on, half off the edge like an expert shove at 'halfpenny'.

Dalin attempts to garner information "Thank you. Uh I don't suppose there is a place for folk of a uh sleight of hand." he attempts to phrase the sentence in a manner that one might understand his meaning... he then takes a swig of the drink.

"Sweetie. I am unattached as a madam and unaffiliated as a concern. If you get my meaning. There is a guild reputedly operating out of Bogtown, but they have yet to infiltrate my establishment I hope.
Mind you one can never be sure. Maybe I should send you to them so you can report back on their activities to me? But how would I know if you are not already reporting me to them? Would hot gelding tongues get you to talk or maybe pretty Lucille can squeeze that info out of you while straddling your thighs?" she jests with you.
"Sleight of hand? Go on then. Show me what you've got. I have a silver dirk strapped to my thigh and a letter tucked inside my blouson."
Pernicious challenges you to pickpocket an item as she walks by to collect glasses.

Dalin smiles at the challenge "I assure you madam. I currently report to no one. Yet." he makes an attampt to snatch the dirk first. Then in the next pass the letter.

Re: Helix: The Foul Pheasant
with those rolls, I can't let the opportunity pass to have some fun.
The Foul Pheasant
Rising to the challenge, Dalin tries to prove he has 'quicksliver' hands but instead he sticks a sausage finger where the sun don't shine and fondles unnecessarily down the landladies bosom. The attempt to snatch her dirk and lift her chicken fillets is woeful and not only cumbersome but in this disrespectful place, noticed by the sharp eyed elves who inhale from the hookah.
"Oi! Tarquin. Did you see that dwarf. He had his hand under her skirt, the filthy little beggar."
" Algernon, I do believe he was having a little diggle at her dirk. Look at him ferret among her corset!"
"Bleeding dirty little Dirk Diggler. Let's get him!"
The two leap up outraged that you would assault the lady of the house in such a manner and proceed to throw pugilistic jabs at you.
The first one swings above you head while the second connects with two foppish and limp wristed uppercuts that tickle your chin.
You are in a fight. Perni steps aside laughing at you. "No blood, no blades gentlemen. Now, let me see what you have got."
So with B giving you 'an attack of opportunity' you may roll to attack him as a counterstrike then roll again to hit either.
Then roll initiative modified by Dex reaction bonus for second round and I will narrate results.

Dalin attempts to defend himself "She did challenge me to try and get her dirk or letter in her bosom...I was just trying to prove I could get them..but apparently drink has slowed my reflexes."
sorry but page 72 confuses the heck out of me so I don't know if I need more rolls or what here.

Re: Helix: The Foul Pheasant
So you need 67 (50 for AC + Dex ) or less to punch one and then damage is from a table of effects. Roll 1d100 +/- to determine effect.1/2 Elf A to hit vs 67%.[1d100] punch -12% [1d100]
1/2 Elf B to hit vs 67% [1d100] punch -10%. [1d100]
So with B giving you 'an attack of opportunity' you may roll to attack him as a counterstrike then roll again to hit either.
So I need a damage roll for your successful first punch.
Then a second punch plus damage.
Three [1d100] please.

Re: Helix: The Foul Pheasant
it's not that straight-forward in the DMG and the macros you had are for a half-elf so I did not know if that was the same for a dwarf with different stats. Here are the 3 more rolls requested.Spearmint wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 10:30 amSo you need 67 (50 for AC + Dex ) or less to punch one and then damage is from a table of effects. Re: Helix: The Foul Pheasant
The rough and tumble in the seedy tavern with the two half-elves trading blows with the stouter and more dextrous dwarf.
Dalin soaks the blows and sends a jab back as 1/2EB opens his guard. You connect a glancing blow with your first swing (-4hp) which allows a follow up uppercut which misses.
The three men rise from stools and pulling up shirt sleeves, menacingly approach you, reinforced in their bravado by overwhelming numbers and some extra courage found from their empty glasses. (I will treat them as slowed).
"Come on then Mr Diggler. Let me see what you've got." says the landlady who heads back behind the bar and pours a stiff whiskey, clearly entertained.

Re: Helix: The Foul Pheasant
Dalin faces off against three bruisers.
He dives straight in, taking them on one by one. He throws two punches to A's ribs, his knuckles impacting the man's ribs through the thick studded gambeson he wears. The man grunts and the plucky dwarf has an opening for a rabbit punch to the liver before the others swing punches in return.
roll me 2 x 1d100 please.

The Foul Pheasant
Strike again effect for Dalin vs [1d100]=79 damage -10% [1d100]=84
So I reconcile your boxing as thus: you strike with left jab (-2hp) but effect 'off balance' nullifies further left hand punches.
You strike with your right impacting in the ribs for a glancing blow (-4hp) and open him up to a right hand uppercut from a 'strike again' effect. You hit him for (-6hp) 'solid punch off balance'. Your routine ends.
Man A takes -12hp which is enough to pile more bodies in the floor.
Men B & C engage with their returned flurry of blows.
The pair swing blows but only one succeeds in tapping the chin of Dalin. -2hp He stands his ground and rally's for the next session.
The noise in the tavern goes up a notch as seats and tables are moved aside and torrents of encouragement from the bar voice the men to 'get stuck in' and wagers are placed on the Diggler'.
roll me 6 x 1d100 noting punch & damage X3. I will roll if you need further strikes.

The Foul Pheasant
The scrap continues ... Dalin taking on all comers.
First left hook gives ineffective blow, strike again opens you up to counter punch, which misses.
You then have your right hook combo. It gives same result as above. This time the counter punch connects to jolt you for another -2hp.
Your attack ends. The two remaining pair square off but one, having hit you staggers about allowing his buddy to interrupt his routine. He might regret it though as both of his wild haymakers impact with such softness as to be almost stroking your cheek lovingly. You may counterstrike him back using next macro. You headbutt him for -6hp and a fourth man hits the deck
However your joy turns to blackout as regaining his balance, the second man finally coshs you and the lights go out as you join the pyramid on the floor, just briefly catching the dwarfs from the other room rushing in for the free-for-all and too late for your defence. -6hp.

The Foul Pheasant
Dalin awakes, thanks to a bucket of water which brings him around. The melee over and the tavern cleared. You look around at some broken furniture, a window with a dwarf sized hole in the shattered glass and several teeth, thankfully not yours, being swept up as one of the ladies mop the blood from the floor.
'Rooster'Rogan looks you over. "Fine show young man. Fine show. Bit more work in the shoulders, dwarves ain't got reach so go for power and keep those feet moving."
You are propped up by the bar.
"Fine mess Diggler. Lost some good patrons for the day and I got to glaze the effing panes again. I would say what, 100 gold in damages? Let me see now." Perni has a few wallets and purses collected on the bar and bites into a platinum piece to test its authenticity. She pokes through some trinkets and holds an earring up, still with an ear attached. "Hello, hello, can you ear me?" she says into it to a gaggle of laughs from others.
"Another fight, another day. You get to live another day too. Alice gone fetch one of the clerics to come patch you up.
So what we going to do with you then?"
