Round 3: The Dusty Arena

Welcome to the Thunderdome!

Outside the city weeps and cries out for help. The populace is poor and lacking, while the ruling class treats them as commodities to be used, bought, and sold for profit. But INSIDE, the Arena provides.

Here you are treated as treasure, given all you need to eat, drink, or be merry. All that is asked in return is that you amuse the crowd. Today that amusement comes in the form of unarmed combat. A brutal blood-filled decadent display of brute force and savagery. The crowd, and therefore the patrons, love the contrast between the golden sand beneath your feet and the crimson blood about to stain it. For the duration of the spectacle, the poor souls watching can pretend they are better than you, that they can demand vengeance, that they are above someone. You know your place. Now give the people what they came for!

Act 3 Scene 1

A four-ring circus.

The eight of you are gathered in the corridor leading to the arena floor. The bright sun casts a shadow from the lowered portcullis on the ground. A weathered balding man addresses you in his uniform.

"For this exhibition, the rules are clear. No weapons, no armor, no killing. Fight your opponent only. Put on a good show."

You all are well versed in the dance, most of you have been here months if not years. While an uneasy competition lies just beneath the surface, on the surface all fighters are friendly. In these moments before the show, some feel nervous, others find a sense of inner peace. The tumultuous noise from the crowd indicates that the show is about to begin.

"The announcer will pair you up when you are announced. Be sure to play up your entrance. Evan, I'm looking at you."
"There are four one-on-one fights, winner continues on to fight again. The eight of you are the lucky ones who get to fight first."

You have a chance to give the announcer your intro or chat with the others. The gate will rise soon.

Evan Schris

The swashbuckler enters the arena bouncing on his feet and getting loose.....when the gate goes up, he goes in with a diving roll flourish and pops up with arms outstretched and a beaming smile for the ladies!!!!!!!

He turns to his companions, his voice quiet and serious in contrast to his antics. "Okay guys; take deep breaths, play it smart and if everybody's still standing and up for it afterwards....first round at the broth.....err.....bar is on me!"

Vonn

Vonn strides out, a grim face glaring at the crowd as he scans it. Once he is at the center of the arena he makes a rude gesture at the crown and waits for his opponent.

Lug bounds through the corridor leading to the arena. An absurdly large dire-wolf cloak is draped across his absurdly large shoulders. Behind him, a band of minstrels hired just for the occasion play the rousing "Lug Theme Song." It's hard to make out the words amidst the sound of the bells, horns, and various percussion instruments in which the musicians appear to specialize, but the general gist of the verses—of which there are several—is that Lug is not only an intimidating fighter with a long list of accomplishments, but he's also fun at parties and a great guy to be around.

He sheds his cloak into the arms of an attractive young attendant, raises his arms high, and mugs for the crowd. A big goofy grin is on his face. "Let's get ready to rrrrrr...FIGHT!" he shouts.

Sorry about the delay. I didn't see that the new threads had been set up.

Act 3 Scene 2

As the gate rises and the trio makes its way into the early afternoon light, the sizable crowd goes silent and then erupts. Five thousand fellow countrymen line the stands, eager to witness the spectacle and brutality of the show.

First out, before the gate is even fully lifted, is Evan. Trumpets blare and somewhere an announcer is spouting nonsense. "Quick as ever, there's Evan! A rough and tumble lad, famous for his tricks and flourishes. I have it on good authority, ladies, that he isn't quick when it counts."

As Vonn strides out, he comfortably plays the heel. The announcer has no problem switching gears. "Who let that guy in again? I thought we tossed him out after last time? He must really have the goods on someone, and it's not me! Back again, hopefully, for the last time, it's Vonn! Yeah? Right back at you big man."

The announcer makes a motion to silence the crowd and trumpets. "Oh! Can you hear it? That can only mean one thing. Lug is in the building!" The crowd listens in and quickly the whole arena seems to be joining in on the singing. Even the announcer gets involved.

"Who's a man among men?
And then say it once more
Who's that hero next door?
Who's a super success?
Don't you know? Can't you guess?
Ask his fans and his five hangers-on
There's just one guy in town
Who's got all of it down..."

After a few more introductions, most less memorable than the above, the other combatants file in. There are four areas marked off, for four concurrent fights.
Evan is matched with Geoffry, a human of unremarkable nature.
Vonn has drawn the Gnome Sared, in what seems to be an intentional ploy to play up his bully nature.
Lug faces Ulfang the Black, a large half-orc with a crowd-pleasing tendency to lick the blood of his opponents

Another fight is arranged nearby, two dwarves in what promises to spark an inter-race rivalry.

The announcer finishes his hype and finally introduces the patrons.
"Citizens of Argas! Stand and cheer for our generous patrons, without whom, none of this would be possible." He motions to a few areas in the box seats, where lavishly dressed men and women sit surrounded by courtiers and obvious security. "And now, I draw your attention to our beloved Mistress, the fair, the lovely, the magnanimous Lady Tarielye!"

A beautiful and young looking Elven lady stands and waves at the patrons. She addresses the fighters with the customary words: "Those who are about to fight, I salute you."
The crowd cheers and all heads turn towards the fights.

One horn...
Sared voices his concern to Vonn: "You're not really a bad guy, right? This is just a civil fight."

Second horn...
Ulfang the black licks his lips and you suspect from the dark liquid coming forth that he has already bit his lip to taste blood..."One more horn pinky, and then I'm coming for you..."

"Let's put on a good show, eh chap?" Geoffry winks at Evan and reaches his hand out in greeting.

Third horn...

Actions!

Normal attack rolls with post, please. I can roll damage. If you want to incorporate what each attack roll would be using the chart, feel free.

Evan Schris

Evan smiles and throws a few salutes to the crowd while being introduced and then happily shakes his opponents' hand and with a disarming grin says; "You seem a great sport Geoffrey....after this, I'll be HAPPY to introduce you to some of the lovelies I know!"

(Assuming he wins Initiative...if he doesn't, this post may be modified)...Evan steps back and waits for the horn. When it goes off, he dances forward, dives into a roll and pops up with a (pummeling attack roll):

1d20 = 3

....a vicious right hook....

(2 points of damage +1 for STR 16 = 3 points of damage and a 12% chance of knockout....do you want me to roll that?)

OOC; Am I supposed to make an attack roll first and THEN roll the d20 to see what it is? Just thought of that, if so, sorry!

Lug grins at the goblin man. "Bring it on, man—er, gob. Orc. Whatever." He awaits the half-orc's charge, then feints at the last moment just enough to turn to the side and attempt to grab the half-orc in a hold.

Act 3 Scene 3

At the final horn, the four pairs rush each other in a display of reckless hostility. The crowd erupts once more and cheers for their favorites.

Evan dives at the feet of Geoffry and pops up just under his opponent's fist, missing it by inches. Evan counters with a savage hook, catching the man right across the jaw spraying blood across the virgin sands. At the first sign of blood, the crowd whips itself into an even greater craze. Above the din, you can make out a few voices shouting "Kill him! KILLL HIIIIM!"

Vonn and the smaller gnome smash together, the quick gnome strikes out and Vonn feels something lightly hit him on his outer thigh. The gnome must have been treasure hunting but missed. 1 dmg Vonn easily grabs the gnome and wraps him into a headlock, slowly squeezing the air out like a bagpipe. By rule, you are able to continue this hold until your opponent, or someone else breaks it. Damage via hold is cumulative. In this first round the damage is 1, if held, the next round it would be 2.

Lug grins at Ulfang, calling him a goblin, which only serves to enrage the crazy half-orc even more. "BLBLBLBSS" Is the only response you get as he sprays his own blood everywhere and charges you. You grab the large half-orc in a bear hug, tightly gripping and squeezing the bloody and smelly man. In return, Ulfang manages to strike the back of your head in an unsporting move 3 dmg, causing you to see some stars for a moment. You too, have your opponent in a hold that can be continued next round.

In the other fight, two dwarves face off in what seems to be a severe mismatch. A big brawny red-bearded dwarf laughs heartily at his rather wiry opponent until that same opponent copies Ulfang and punches the arrogant dwarf in the back of the head.

Lug laughs again—the big gob thinks Lug's head is a vulnerable spot? Hah! That's much better than other places that could get hit—not that Lug would suggest them.

The big bear of a man tightens his bear hug.

Evan Schris

Evan dances back, staying on the balls of his feet, completely ignoring the crowd screaming for him to end poor Geoffrey's life. When he sees his opponent is still in the fight, he'll dance close and attempt to pummel him again....

Attack roll: [1d20]=15

If that hits, it is a: [1d20]=2

Evan ducks, leans in and cuts loose with an Uppercut, attempting to end the fight with a quick knockout blow.....

OOC: 2 Damage, 15% chance of KO

Act 3 Scene 4

Mayhem and cheers and the order of the day in the arena. Four fights, each captivating the attention of the crowd, rumble on.

After narrowly avoiding a painful punch, Vonn has the smaller gnome in a nasty headlock. Sared the gnome can do little to prevent the inevitable, lashing out at Vonn's leg but finding no purchase. His face is bright red at this point and he starts scratching at your arm.

As if reading Lug's mind, Ulfang finds a better place to hit, gouging the eyes of the big barbarian Lug. Sharp pain is made even worse by the smell of the half-orc's fingers and the thought of what he last touched. 2 dmg Ulfang takes the opportunity to break free of the bear hug and resets the fight. "Laugh again, pinky!" As he scratches his ass exaggeratedly with the hand that poked you.

Evan, on the other hand, is having a blast. He dances around Geoffry, waving his arms to the crowd. It's most likely your imagination, but you swear you hear someone in the crowd scream "I love you!" Evan slides into Geoffry's space dipping under a blow that glances off his back 1dmg and connects with another nasty punch. It rocks Geoffry back on his heels, staggering the outclassed man.

Urin the Red Dwarf finally stops checking out the competition in the other fights and focuses on his current opponent. He feints and gets Telchar to throw a wild punch, missing as Urin sweeps the left arm of Telchar, slightly turning him to expose his back. Urin deftly lands a resounding blow to the lower back of the other dwarf. Even from your position, and in the middle of your fights, you all can feel the blow and hear the crowd wince collectively. Telchar crumples in a pile of used dwarf.

Evan Schris

Evan moves in close to Geoffrey and says quietly, "Just drop to the ground, okay....no need to get really hurt for these blood thirty folks" while throwing what LOOKS like a vicious blow, but one he pulls (trying to just 'tap' him).....

Attack roll: 1d20 = 17

(I'll let you decide what to do with this particular situation)

Act 3 Scene 5

The fights drag on. With one less pair of fighters for the crowd to focus on now that Urin has discarded his opponent, more attention is on the PC's.

The well-trained gladiator Vonn is quickly putting an end to the uppity gnome, pressing his headlock for yet another round. The poor gnome is no longer touching the ground and suddenly goes completely limp. Vonn drops him into a pile as the crowd cheers in appreciation. A few articles of clothing are thrown his way and someone in the crowd screams "Hold me like that tonight!"

The crowd is really starting to focus on Lug's fight. He may not be having fun, but it's everything they ever wanted. He dips low to try and grab Ulfang's legs as the half-orc swings wildly over his head. A heady musky scent gets stronger as Lug manages to only grab one leg. He quickly twists and turns Ulfang, dropping the brute to the ground in a painful leg hold. Ulfang screams in pain and starts thrashing about. You can maintain this hold next round, if desired. I modified your 10 to a 9, based on your STR modifier as in the house rules, which resulted in a leg lock.

Geoffry pushes Evan back after the sweet whispers and plants a soft jab on his chin. 1DMG. In return, he 'accidentally twists and exposes his side to Evan. Ever the gentleman, Evan graciously taps him on the kidney causing Geoffry to gasp and flop to the ground in a stage-worthy performance. The crowd gasps and then bursts with cheer. "Did you see that? What a blow!"

Now all eyes, both spectator and combatant are on Lug and Ulfang. The howls of pain reverberating across the sands quiet the crowd as they anticipate a conclusion.
