Denny

Light: None held.
Weapon: smithing hammer
Position: behind Tore (if we walk in single file up the track)

The dwarf wears his smithing apron, the thick leather and forge gloves providing rudimentary armour. He walks behind Tore , a large claw hammer in one hand. He has a small satchel containing a few sacks, the hooded candle lantern, a wineskin and some nibbles. A rope is coiled over his shoulder.

"Sure let us see these abandoned trucks." He peers in to the containers. "Gold nuggets left behind would be nice." he says optimistically.

Light Source: Torch
Weapon: Torch, Shortbow when conditions permit
Party Position (front/middle/rear): Front, Left Side

Christian will take four torches and light one, stowing the others for later. He keeps his bow and one arrow in his off hand, ready to drop his torch and nock the arrow if the need arises, relying on the brighter lanterns to illuminate his shots.

He'll shadow Bigsby toward the passage, but pause near the central pillar and walk to within ten feet of it to raise his torch and inspect it more closely.

Silky

Light Source: None
Weapon: Parang, butcher's knife
Party Position (front/middle/rear): Front

"This looks promising! Mine carts mean something worth hauling, right? And The dust means we're the first ones here." Silky moves to check out the minecarts after Denny mentions gold.

Tore will tap the carts with the dull edge of his spear when he reaches them, testing if any critters have made them their home. He'll also keep a look out from above, for spiders and other crawlers. If its safe, he'll peer aroynd and under each cart and then inside.

Day: Sept 9th
Time: 4:40 pm
Sunset/Sunrise: 6:17pm/6:13am
Weather: 81F; Broken Clouds; Wind: 13mph from SE
Turns Elapsed in Dungeon: 2

For now I am having Bowb and Rand taking guard positions at the top of the sinkhole

TheParty divides and conquers the room:
Tore, Denny, and Silky inspect the Minecarts along the north wall, while Bigsby and Christian take the southern half of the room.

Tore, Denny, and Silky reach the first of the mine carts as Bigsby and Christian travel along the south wall. The minecarts are well used but in sturdy condition. They appear to have been well-maintained. But given the extent of dust in this place, they must have been sitting there unused for centuries or more, as evidenced by the severely rusted rail tracks. Never-the-less it doesn’t keep the three adventurers from noticing the small amounts of coin strewn about the bottom of each minecart. An inspection of all seven minecarts reveals the same, a smattering of coins at the bottom of each, as if the last owner(s) couldn’t be bothered with such an insignificant number of coins. As the search continues Denny begins to notice TheParty’s feet having disturbed the dust coating the floor, revealing broadly scattered across the floor of the room (1-2 coins every 2-3 feet).

As TheParty continues their exploration of the room, evidence begins to mount revealing an utter lack thereof in this room. There appears to be no sign of critters or monsters, including your basic everyday run-of-the-mill house spider, or tracks of any kind (humanoid or otherwise). Other than the dust, the space seems devoid of organic life.

Christian peels off from the south wall to inspect the central column as Bigsby approaches the south tunnel. He finds each pillar has three steel rods – roughly 3’ long, ½” thick, with a 1” diameter ball at the tip – have been secured into holes evenly spaced around the columns at a height of 7’. The rods seem untarnished and in perfect condition. The pillars are smooth, fashioned from cut stones (the same as the surrounding stone of the mine), 3’ in diameter, and clearly fashioned by skilled hands.

As Christian completes his assessment of the columns in the center of the room, Bigsby approaches the south tunnel. A 10’x10’ section of floor at the entrance of the tunnel (see map) is raised above the main floor roughly 5 inches. On the raised floor, centered along the west wall, sticking up out of the floor, are three levers made of steel, roughly three feet tall. (assuming Christian won’t step on that section of floor without further inspection. Stepping into the south passage would require hugging the corner and a bit of dexterity.) Peering around the corner with lantern light shows a 10’ wide tunnel running 15’ before opening up to the East. On the south wall of the passage is a steel cage door, slightly ajar. The room beyond the cage door appears to be empty.

Bigsby inspects the raised floor closer, as well as the ceiling above it, trying to determine if this is some kind of elevator or something similr, operated by the rods in the wall.

"It looks like we got some levers or something over here. And there is another passage beyond this one. I see a cage with a door."

Are there cart tracks on the floor in this area as well?

Denny

Will assist in checking out the platform using his racial dwarven stonecraft skill.

"Maybe we push a cart onto the platform.
Pull the lever with a rope and see if it descends taking the extra weight."
He figures the elevator may work like 'dumb waiter' service chimneys he has seen in the past.

A cage? To keep a prisoner in or a guardian creature?

The cart tracks stop ~6' inside the present room, just inside the East entrance (from which you entered) There are no other cart tracks in the room.

Bigsby inspects the raised floor closer, as well as the ceiling above it, trying to determine if this is some kind of elevator or something similar, operated by the rods in the wall.
Denny: Will assist in checking out the platform using his racial dwarven stonecraft skill.
Platform: There is a hairline crack along the platform where it meets the floor of the room. The edges of the platform have vertical scrapes in places where it touches the floor, as thought the platform moves up and down. Inspecting the roof directly above the platform you note cracks, or rather grooves, that outline a 10'x10' square that match the outline of the platform itself. Inside that 10'x10' area on the roof are worn or scratched lines running perpendicular to the west wall.

Levers: The levers look as though they may have symbols on each one, though you can't make them our from the edge of the platform, and also look as though they may be in different positions.
When facing the platform and the west wall:
  • Lever 1 (far left): Pushed toward the wall
  • Lever 2 (middle): Center position. Looks like it may go forward and backward (toward/away from the wall)
  • Lever 3 (far right): Pulled toward the room, away from the wall
Denny is confident this is an old Dwarven elevator (he has heard old tales handed down from generation to generation, telling of amazing contraptions and unworldly skills of the Tinker Dwarves and Gnomes of old).

Tore pensively combs his beard with his fingers, concluding with a nod to Denny. "Ya, why not? Let's give it a go. Christian, gimme' a hand over here." He hands his torch to Silky and beckons Christian over for help. He walks behind the nearest mining cart and attemts to push it towards the platform with Christian.

When done, he'll dust his hands and offer, "I'd be real gentle and slow using them levers. Give 'em a try, Denny."

The cart resists initially, but then lurches forward and begins to roll with ease. You have no trouble getting the cart onto the platform. Let me know which lever you plan to lasso, and any other details which might help me adjudicate accordingly the results.

'Denny'

Encouraged by what he perceives, the dwarf braves the platform.

"I suspect the ceiling above is another platform which will replace this one should it descend or this becomes the ceiling if we go up in the world."

He can't imagine mine working on a level above as that would be too close to village ground level. He thinks about the levers. Maybe one is a hand brake, another controls up or down motion. A third maybe a release valve to work counterweight, like moving stone blocks with shifting sand or some form of hydraulics.

Before he does manipulate a lever he wants to check those theories out.

"I know some roguish fellows have a knack for discovering mechanical traps. If one of you have a skill like that maybe some observation could tell which lever is most prudent to move first and in what order?"

He would like to use any skills relating to find/remove traps.

"Also a torch bearer needs to volunteer to descend with me while I work the levers."

Collecting what he can of the coins from the floor and inside the cart that is about to be pushed onto the platform, Bigsby speaks softly to the others.

"Your logic about the levers seems sound, but we should do a little trial and error before any of us try to ride it up and down, just in case we're wrong."

With that, he steps one foot on the corner of the platform, putting more and more weight on it if there is no reaction until he can stand one foot on and the other on the main floor.

"Anyone think we should leap across here and check out this hall before doing any more experiments?"

Silky

He accepts the torch from Tore with a shrug. He uses it to examine the columns and odd rods. "These look like handles, you know? But much too high for little people."

As Denny suggests riding the elevator down and needing a torchman, Silky leaps at the opportunity. "I have a torch! Let's do it!" Only Bigsby's wet blanket prevents him from kicking the lever and trying it out.

"Ah. Smart man. Ok. I'll go over and check out the cage and corridor. Who's coming?" He leaps the corner, trying to land on the other side of the platform.

Christian throws in to lend Tore a hand, then pauses to consider Bigsby's logic. "Aye. Let's have a wee look 'fore we clang about overmuch." He resumes his place at the front of the group and peers cautiously into the darkness at the edge of his torchlight and the glow of Bigsby's lantern. He advances into the unknown, eyes open wide and ears straining to catch errant sounds.

He looks at the floor to see if it's as dust-covered as the previous room was.

Tore advances holding his torch raised at his rear shoulder. He scans the ceiling at the edge of the torchlight and extends an open palm in front of him. He sways his hand gently side to side, he quietly mutters to Christian and Silky "When ya stand on tha prow of a ship, with thick mists hidin shoals beneath, ya can almost feel where they are when tha air changes suddenly in front of ya" He attempts to detect any change in temperature, moisture, wind current to ascertain what lies ahead in the darkness.

Day: Sept 9th
Time: 4:50 pm
Sunset/Sunrise: 6:17pm/6:13am
Weather: 81F; Broken Clouds; Wind: 13mph from SE
Turns Elapsed in Dungeon: 3
Marching Order:
(F) Tore
(F) Silky
(M) Christian
(R) Bigsby
(R) Denny

Bigsby’s search of the SW corner of the chamber reveals a platform with levers, which Denny later decides might well be an old Dwarven elevator. An old mine cart is pushed to the platform, the coins within removed (30sp, 27gp, 3pp), and then pushed onto the platform to test its worthiness to support their weight. The platform doesn’t budge. Bigsby then places one foot on a corner and increases his weight slowly. There is no perceivable change, the platform is solid EDIT: and does not appear to have traps of any kind. Silky examines the strange metal rods attached to the columns 7’ up and can’t seem to make sense of them. Then he begins to notice they are all around the room, placed every 15’ or so.

For now TheParty decides to forego operation of the elevator to searching the SW tunnel. One never knows what may be lurking around dark corners…

TheParty resumes marching order and searches the SW tunnel…The floor, still covered in thick dust, looks the same as the previous room. The ceilings all 10’ high, the SW tunnel 10’w x 10’h. Only their own shuffling of feet on the dusty stone floor can be heard. Silky notices the strange metal rods continue down the SW tunnel at the same height of 7’ and spaced every 10’ or so. Pausing just shy of the corner, Tore peers around into the darkness beyond. The passage continues East for another 45’ and ends in hazy shadows of torch light where a lone mine cart huddles against the end of the tunnel. There are six other cells like the one at the end of the SW tunnel, making a total of 7 cells, all with slightly rusty steel cage doors, and all slightly ajar.

The chamber at the end of the SW tunnel (marked with an X on the map) has a somewhat rusty steel cage door a few inches ajar. The remains of a few rotten crates, what may have been a bucket at one time, and perhaps some old bedding are the only apparent items in the cell.

Just around the corner, fixed to the stone wall, are two more levers, similar to those on the platform (see below), but six inches long and roughly 4' off the floor. The closest lever has the symbol of a star or sun on its side and is in the DOWN position, the lever (furthest) has an X on it and is in the UP position. The floor remains covered in dust, with no tracks of any kind. All is eerily silent.

Platform Info
Levers: The levers have symbols on each one,

  • Lever 1 (far left): Pushed toward the wall (Symbol: Star/Sun)
  • Lever 2 (middle): Center position. Looks like it may go forward and backward (toward/away from the wall) (Symbol: Double Arrow – Up/Down)

"Well nothing seems to stir about."

Temptation gets the better of him and he fiddles with the two levers, moving sun to moon and back again and the same with the X.

Bigsby happily pockets the party's treasure for safe keeping as he creeps up the rest of the way to the end of the short tunnel, the pointy end of his hay fork leading the way. He looks into each cell as he passes before investigating the lone cart, poking at it initially before moving any closer.

"Do you suppose these cells were used as living quarters by whoever was doing the mining down here? It seems a strange place to harbor prisoners."
