The Chase is On...Abandoned Suburbs , Late Morning

Those of you looking at the oncoming riders glimpse a growing dustcloud moving from the city gates in your direction. You can't make out who or what is creating it from this distance, but it does seem to be moving rapidly nearer your position.

Arrows fly and some strike true while others thud into the sand, though in the heat of battle it's difficult to tell which belong to whom. A return strike comes perilously close to Gil's head, but all he feels is the wind from its passing. One rider clutches his side and another gropes for an arrow protruding from the back of his shoulder as they thunder toward the wagon. All draw swords and axes for close combat.

Oddly, they bypass the rear of the wagon where their enemies await and lunge straight for the horses, seemingly intent on hacking the beasts down and crippling your escape.

Gil - 36/39
Jasmine - 51/55
Corthalis - 10/10
Alec - 22/22
Shylock 23/23

For those with questions regarding range/hits/etc, there will often be factors at play which modify your characters' rolls. For a little mystery and uncertainty, they aren't made known. So, just as in real life, you might be great at something and do well--yet still fail because of factors you either don't know about or couldn't control if you did. So rest easy. The same applies to the other team, as well. :D

Conversely, you might do poorly and luck out regardless, if fate favors you. These things happen.

Alec

Making the roof see that the thugs are going after the horses so he let's fly with his bow. High ground and surprise.

[1d20+3] = 9+3 = 12 C. Long Bow

[1d8] = 6 Sheaf arrow Damage

[1d20+3] = 10+3 = 13 C. Long Bow

[1d8] = 3 Sheaf arrow Damage

Now that they are closer, how many enemies are there?
“Lash the horses!” yells Gil, with uncharacteristic plainness, as soon as he realizes the enemy’s intent. He hopes the sudden movement of the horses will make it harder for them to be hit.

The barbarian fires his bow again, targeting the man he had previously hit.

Gil short bow +2 Dex mod : [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15 damage [1d6] = 6, [1d20+2] = 10+2 = 12 damage [1d6] = 3

Shylock Cravat

Circles around the melee in the rubble and overgrown weed patches, hunched into a hollow here and crawling by a wind blown dune. He watches the melee and tries to sneak upon one of the horsemen from behind, athletically jumping behind the saddle abd stabbing him with surprise in the back.

Shylock. Surprise backstab [1d20+4] = 17+4 = 21 damage doubled [1d6] = 4 -8hp?

In the Heat of Battle, Late Morning

The dust cloud in the far distance draws closer as the party braces for battle. Another few seconds and whatever is making it will come into view. You have the sinking feeling that the city guard is in hot pursuit.

Corthalis stabs his finger at the approaching riders and two horses crumple to the ground and flip end over end before coming to rest upon the sand, unmoving. Their riders go sailing and land in the dunes twenty feet beyond the wagon. Neither rises.

Gil shouts for the horses to be lashed into action, but no one heeds the barbarian's call. The beasts stand placidly cropping dead, dry grass from between the cobbles. But Gil's arrows fly true this time and a third rider is lifted from the saddle by the sheer impact of the arrow coupled with his forward momentum. He spins off the rump of the horse and it plunges desperately on into the desert.

The sudden appearance of Shylock whittles them down to two, the savage halfling plunging his dagger into a chink in the big man's armor. Spooked by the sudden added weight, the massive horse lunges into a hard gallop and bears both the slumped rider and the tiny halfling down the road at a rapid pace.

Gil squints into the dust and sees but two men remaining. They dodge arrows from Alec upon his high perch and spur their mounts into the wagon's team. Axes rise and fall and one of your team goes down in a spray of crimson, neighing piteously as his short life is ended in savage fashion. Rather than remain and face Gil and Jasmine hand to hand, they seem about to spur ahead to pursue Shylock and their fallen comrade.

Gil - 36/39
Jasmine - 51/55
Corthalis - 10/10
Alec - 22/22
Shylock 23/23

Gil, barbarian skald

Gil lets out a sharp whistle and motions Claw the war hawk.

With a savage yell the barbarian bares steel and charges the short length of the wagon, vaults from the driver seat, misjudges a step in his launch at a guard on the horse, and misses completely! He lands with a splash of sand and a profane curse.

Claw swoops down into the face of the guard.

[1d8] = 8 Arrows

OOC- Do we get attacks for each attack they make on the Horses??

Shylock Cravat

Pushes the slumped over guard off the horse if he is dead. At least his 1/2 ling 60lbs weight should no longer trouble the horse. Seeing the two others riders in hot pursuit, the halfling does the crazy thing rather than whip the horse into a faster gallop.

I am going to try and stand balancing on the saddle, reins in one hand and dagger in the other. I want to charge directly at the two riders and just before a moment of impact like two jousting warriors, I want to leap across from horse to horse and takedown an opponent.

does it loo like those in pursuit will arrive within range next round? if so, another SLEEP spell on them, if not, bow on those still up by us

In the Heat of Battle, Late Morning

Jasmine swings a mighty blow but it flies wide, narrowly missing Gil who misjudges his leap and shoots past the advancing horsemen. Claw fares a little better and lands a gouging claw to one rider's cheek. As the man rears back to fight off the attack, an arrow sprouts from his back and Alec puts him down.

Corthalis lands a blow on the last remaining rider, and the huge man snarls as he breaks the arrow off and flings it down, spurring harder still after Shylock. But the halfling, rather than fleeing to safety, turns to face his doom and stands bravely in the saddle, brandishing his dagger as the horses gallop wildly.

 I want so badly for this to succeed. Give me a hard (4d6) Dex check to make the leap and an attack roll to take him down.

In the distance you see the sun glinting off plumed helmets and tall spears as the dust cloud finally takes human form. An entire company (some twenty men) of heavily-armed cavalry clatters at a steady trot down the cobbled road in pursuit of the mercenary guards. In the space of thirty seconds they will be within range of your bows. And you will be in range of theirs. You've certainly caught someone's attention.

Your mangled horse is still bound to the cart; the surviving beast prances nervously. You aren't going anywhere fast until the poor creature is removed.

Jasmine - 51/55
Corthalis - 10/10

Gilbert O’Sullivan, barbarian skald

“A simple marketplace brawl has the whole damn city after us?!” Gil thinks irritably as he quickly slashes the reins off the living wagon horse. Oddly, the barbarian’s thoughts are not forced into verse as are his spoken words.

“The wagon is too slow
Leading to fatal blow
By yon guards men
Run we must yet again,”

says Gil as he leaps upon his own horse Mount.
If I recall, the wagon had two horses but Gil’s own horse, Mount, (and I assume others?) are also here. Mount would have been tethered to the wagon, coincidentally on the opposite side of the mercenaries.

GIL. STOP. Get the other horse and hitch it up. The rest of you grab weapons and arrows from the dead. Throw them in the back of the wagon. Get on a horse and ride. Let's get out of here. No more jumping off or you get left. After the rider less horse is hitched up. Alec hops in the seat and starts whipping them for all they are worth.

Once reaching the edge of the building he smashed a flask of oil on the nearest building and goes about striking his flint and steel.

These guards want to play hard ball then they can burn. This city is a dried up tinderbox. Burn it! Burn it All!

My thought was guardsmen on horses will inevitably catch a horse-drawn wagon. But us just riding our own horses, with the lead we have at the moment, will likely be able to outrun them. Them being 20

You've got a great point. And I wasn't railroading you there at all, if it seemed so. Just mentioning options. This train rolls on regardless. I will let y'all sort that out. :D

Jasmine

Paladin, Jasmine has Horsemanship, a Barbarian ability.

Darnit I just realised if you look at her sheet I have all her Barbarian abilities noted but no NWP'S lol...... So it would be the 3 + 1

K chose them.

Jasmine hurries and attempts to rein in a horse and jump on its back quickly, waiting for the others. Speed is of the essence and she has no

idea of these new pursuers are friendly or not. She also has no desire to wait and find out the hard way.

Alec

Alec is not willing to give up his wagon and horses that easily. He spent everything he had to get them and the gear in the back will keep us alive. So he proceeds with hitching the other horse up and driving like hell once he has them hitched.

Shylock Cravat

Shylock. Hard dex skill check vs 18 [4d6]=12

Rides into the charging rider, standing on the saddle and whipping his mount into a frenzy. At the split second before impact the halfling leaps like ... well a flying squirrel comes to mind ... and barrels into his opponent.
