Baxtaw- I would take you there, but we need a few more people. The area is filled with Wargs and goblins. And there is mention of white dragon seen in the area.

C'ang died on a battlefield in front of the mountain that was the hall of the goblin king and Scatha's lair, right? That mountain is occupied by dwarves again now, and can be visited as an IC location. Although I think I still need to flesh that location out.

Bremen tells the others of the party that, should he get the skeleton, he will be building a structure to house it. The skeleton will be set up to look as fierce as it was - only a skeleton, of course. If you all want to have statues made of yourselves looking to strike it down, I will be proud to put them on display for you.

Basically this is a way for your characters to make a self-tribute for XP. You get to do this once/level, at 100gp per level. So a 2nd level character can gain up to 200XP for a statue if they spend at least 200gp on it. ;) Bremen promises to not melt the statues down for coin. :P

11 September 2021
Lord Commander Bremen joins Baxtaw and Ywaz for a pint. Ywaz, no disrespect, but your brother didn't kill that dragon. We did. But you could go and pay your respects just the same. The King of the Blackhelm clan is coming north and cleaning those mountains out. Should be safe enough trip, just a day or two each way.

Bremen spreads word around that the White Tower will be hosting a tournament within a fortnight in celebration of the slaying of Scatha, and the large part that the Knights of Baudhil took in that deed. He invites everyone to come to his Tower for the festivities.

Announcement will be posted in correct thread over the weekend.

Amistad

"I believe your brother charged the dragon Scatha as it sought to fly away with that feisty Foxy in its' claws. His story ended there. Maybe you would honour him greater by creating your own saga of adventure. Orcs are massing in the northern territories. I would seek brave fellows to join my quest to contact them. Would you Ywaz and elf spell-blade Baxtaw be willing to come?"

Amistad asks them to consider the expedition.

Ywaz

"There seem to be celebrations in honor of the slaying of Scatha, would it not be more honorable if I stayed to honor C'ang with these tributes, perhaps I can erect a statue in his honor as it be said. Besides one must always honor the dead before the living."

The ornate and curious looking Dwarf looks to Bremen for confirmation, then leads with a smile.

"So my brother didn't kill the dragon from within? No matter, my clan will never know of this. For any dwarf a good story is always better than the truth." With that he smiles, begins to laugh heartily and downs his pint with a foamy grin.

OOC: No shunning on Amistad, Spearmint, Ywaz did come to these lands to know the truth about his brother, though that truth may die in this tavern.

Baxtaw- replies to Amistad. I will go with you on this journey if your trek takes up pass the spot where Cang met his fate to the dragon. So that Ywaz may pay his respects.

Amistad

"The encounter with the dragon was SW by the hills,
at least two days trek from here I believe. I plan to go in the opposite direction scouting upriver, through the swamp and into the northern plains. There are some nearby local ruins, a Boglings lair that caught my eye also but I don't want to overcommit a small enterprising team."

Bremen nods as Amistad talks. True, I'll be off to the White Tower and will need to organize the construction of my museum, and oversee the assembly of Scatha's skeleton. And the tournament will take some time, but perhaps I can trust others to manage that. If Amistad goes north to seek the bogling ruins, that is near enough the White Tower that it concerns me. I will try to come with you, but either way, you may try to recruit some of my knights if you want.

Baxtaw, Cang died at Scatha's lair - the seat of King Drunil. Southwest of here, where we just returned from. You can take Ywaz and be back in four days, at the least. More if you seek an audience with the King Drunil.

Valdus, King Drunil cleared that area of the map, so going to that location is just a matter of posting he is going. There might be an encounter roll, like with Beith's Watch, but I don't think so. Just post your action in the Game Clock thread as 14-16 September for the was there, then another two days for whenever you want to return to Gaul. You can also make a post in the Dwarf Halls thread (Marullus will thank you for advancing the clock.) Then you can leave with Amistad or go to the White Tower, which is another day and a few gold pieces for a trouble-free trip. (Not paying for an escort merely incurs encounter rolls, but that could be deadly for a lone, level 1 character)

All that to say that Ywaz won't likely get an adventure out of going to see where Cang died.

With some issues over getting the craft made on time and to the preferred design, Amistad will delay his expedition until after the Bremen tournament.

A weak, middle-aged man in academic's robe and spectacles wanders into the tavern.

"Greetings, My name is Bede. I am a medium. I have recently come up from the South on the understanding that there are new opportunities for scholars here, without the senseless political competition of the wizarding towers of the old cities.

"I also see an expedition is being planned to investigate an orcish mountain up the river some ways: is there room for another volunteer? I recognize that I must first build up a small cache of wealth and experience before I can rise through the ranks of a tower, and this adventure seems promising."

Amistad

"Happy to meet your acquiatance Bede. Perhaps in your sojourns before we set off after this forthcoming tourney event, you should enquire at Tolls Tower. My friend Earc Orctongue is a young wizard of renown. There might be some knowledge you could acquire that could prove useful."

A mage is good to have, for Amistad has little In the way of arcane knowledge.

Golgarth a young warrior type enters the tavern to look around at the gifted articles from past expeditions and listens to the tale of heroic deeds sung by Regis the bard. He pays for a meal and asks about a common room for 'a night or two'.
He asks Mister Hyde about the tavern patrons and checks out the local bulletin board for offers of assistance.

He will stay in the tavern until October 1st and then venture perhaps to the logging camp or the dwarf holds.

Ablesforth, Pendleton, Idriss, Molay, Jacques, Sigmund, Rhe, and Kerr return from sealing the hellmouth under the old goblin hole. They are rewarded by the Archduke and the Templars of Eruanna for their service.
Ablesforth: The Demon Hole: Part 2 - 30 Aug 2021

01 October 2021

The festival ended, life begins back to normal around the city. Things have a more hurried pace as the days get shorter and the commonfolk move from the langor of long summer days to the fear of the frozen-over winter just around the corner.

Blackjack Amistad, Issachar, Sir Piers Garrett, and their companions depart Gaul with fanfare and a retinue of platemail clad calvary from the ArchDuke. They head up the road towards Beith's Watch and through Lord Earc's demesne and into the forests beyond to treat with the orcs.

Expedition: Blackjack/Emmisaries to the Orcs - 01 Oct 2021

08 October 2021
The nights begin to dip towards freezing, a light drizzle still dampening each afternoon this week. The commonfolk wonder when it will soon be snow instead. The moon waxes gibbous, a full moon only a week away. The Clerics of Gwanwen forecast that the first freeze is likely only six weeks away - farmers clear the last of their fields, housewives busy pickling, canning, and smoking foodstuffs for the months to come.

Sorry for the delays recently. I recommend the new PCs either go to Pinewood Vale and into the forests (GMed by Spearmint) or to explore ruins to the east on the Yoldessi Plains (GMed by Stirling) as both are ready and waiting for an expedition. Hopefully RL calms down soon for Rusty, Zhym, and Alethan.

One night, after several weeks of silence and near-solitude in the Temple of Gwanwen, Tollander Kane seeks a change of scenery. He takes a seat at a table in the tavern and orders a mug of watery ale. After several weeks alone in meditation, he lets his tongue flow freely. Plied with a few more ales by the locals, he decides to regale them with tales of his last adventure.

The Hell-Spawned Burden
(based on The White Man's Burden by Rudyard Kipling

We took up the Hell-spawned burden

Intent on noble deed

To bury it forever

In Gaul’s hour of need.

Across the plains we travelled

To the Spiral Vault

To lay the Orb to rest

And bring the evil to a halt.

We brought the Hell-spawned burden

To the secret dwarven door

Once across the threshold

Ancient dead lay on the floor

Then attacked by vicious undead

Lurking in their nest

We drove them off with violence

And continued with our quest

We took the Hell-spawned burden

Down the stairs into the hall

Our progress blocked by fire

That burned from wall to wall

Frustrated by this magic

We stood there by the well

Then assailed by hordes of fiends

From the very gates of hell

We hid the Hell-spawned burden

In the darkened dwarven hall

Buried there in secret

Unless evil doth befall

Beneath the hollowed hilltop

In the valley far away

The orb has been secured for now,

Until another day.
I hope that nobody is offended by the choice of this Kipling poem as the source material for this. It's certainly a poem about a nasty subject and I apologize if I have offended anybody. I really only chose it because the idea occurred to me of Neegan carrying a terrible artifact that drew evil things to it. This seemed similar to a line in the Fellowship of The Ring about Frodo being "lost in the wild and bearing a terrible burden". If anybody is offended, let me know and I'll certainly delete this.

Fairfax Socrates

The halfling entrepreneur, entertainer and adventurer is drinking an ale in the tavern, swinging his short hobbit legs from the bar stool. Not much doing around town since a plan to explore with the famed 'Brazen of the North' (sure some character whispered that was Ms Foxy's real title).

"Some old lags in here given up on adventure," he thinks seeing silent and scarred heroes of the past slumber into their tankards. Suddenly a vision of hope and fey enchantment walks in, sporting boots and blades.

"Miss please, share my table. New to town? So am I but new to adventure oh no I can regale you with plenty of stories. But I am looking to write new ones, of danger abd bravery and heroic enterprise. Your name? Laila? ... would you care for a walk in the woods?"

Fairfax greets the new adventurer to town and shows her various trinkets and items given to the inn from past expeditions. There was some talk of a forest expedition being muted. So I can begin to investigate that possibility.

Laila

I expected to find a mark, but certainly not this quickly, the young girl thinks as she accepts Fairfax's offer, seating herself opposite the man with delicate grace. A rugged backpack is placed to one side of her stool, along with a fine longsword that seems a shade oversized for the owner's slight build. She stands barely over 5ft tall, but still has to fix her gaze downwards as she listens to her diminutive associate ramble on about one inane exploit after another; though are they all so asinine? As one story deftly rolls into another, Laila barely having to utter a word to keep the conversation rolling at a brisk pace, realisation dawns that Fairfax is no mere commoner. There is perhaps more to this hafling than meets the eye. Luck has seen that our paths crossed, but whether good or bad remains to be seen... the thief ponders privately, ever fancying herself more of a sophist than the evidence would suggest. At the halfling's suggestion to depart the inn and join him beyond the gates, her refined intuition tells her to accept his invitation.

"Lead onwards, friend."

Regis the Bard presents the soulful rendition of Tollander's tribute to the Orb Quest, moving the crowd to a somberness in their cups. Their efforts to carry the Orb of Endless Suffering far from Gaul are saluted.
