Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Jinx will call a bolt of lightning down from the sky to the cluster of the most Giants in a 20 feet diameter. Eyes ablaze with natures wrath, sparks rippling across his fingers as he lifts his small arms and thrusts them forward at the oncoming Giants.

Flam will launch his hammer at the nearest frost giant.
Stay strong here friends! We can easily take this group down if we fight together.
Firesledge [1d20+6] = 18+6 = 24 Damage [1d6+4] = 2+4 = 6 + [1d6] = 5

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Throm & Krom take up their crossbows and aim for the neck and heads of the nearest giants. Though it appears Throm's aim is off Throm L.Crossbow [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6 to hit [1d4+3] = 3+3 = 6
Krom L.Crossbow [1d20+1] = 18+1 = 19 to hit [1d+2] = err dmg
Brax when he is in range to use his magical hammer of the dwarf's will aim his throw for the head of the front most giant. Hammer of the Dwarfs [1d20 +7] = 14+7 = 21 to hit [1d6 x3] = 5x3 = 15 +8 = s/m dmg [1d6 x3] = 2x3 = 6 +7 = 13 lrg dmg

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Surprise Round
Date: Autumn, 432 ca., Campaign Day 15
Time: 9:30 (as of end of post)
Weather: 12 degrees (f), howling wind (over 30 mph), visibility 70'
Location: Entrance to Rift
*********************************
Magic in Effect (all cast as of 9:20)
Jinx: Call Lightning (lasts 10 turns; 1 bolt per turn)
Hollis: Insect Plague (lasts 9 turns)
Andor: PFE 10' R (lasts 9 turns; cast by Flam)
Arqos: Strength 18 (lasts 54 turns; cast by Andor)
Gaerys: Strength 18/20 (lasts 54 turns; cast by Andor)
Brax: Strength 18/10 (lasts 66 turns; cast by Vor)
*****************************************
Surprise Round
Jinx calls down a tremendous stroke of lightning in the midst of a group of giants and ogres. The bolt booms upon the snow-packed earth in a blinding flash, incinerating one giant and two ogres, and severely wounding another giant.
Flambeau flings his hammer at the nearest giant, inflicting a solid blow on a "fresh" opponent.
Throm and Krom fire away. Krom's arrow connects, killing the giant who had (barely) survived the lightning strike.
The remainder of the party is either too indecisive, "packed in" or far to act in the few seconds of surprise.
The party, at least some of it, took immediate advantage of its surprise. The battle would now begin in earnest.

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
If the scale is 10ft per square if not Andor adjust so that he targets the most creatures without harming any of his party.
Andor announces just to the group "Fireball". Andor uses the ring and targets middle of the groups Fg at it's head height, trying to hit all the creatures with the blase but would error on the side of caution to ensure the rear most creatures are hit rather than trying to engulf the front ogre and remaining Fg on the front line. He figures this will still give the archers of the group targets that would be viewable should his spell goes off first.
Fireball 11th level [6d6] = 14 + [5d6] = 13 = 27

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Andor adjust his Fireball at Gaery's request (See OOC by Zyhm)although it is almost identical to his original plan. His would have put the center just a little further back so any melee attempts would be further way from the blast radius but this will do too.

Round 1
The party takes the widest possible initiative, which Andor seizes by blasting a fireball from the ring into the mass of giants and ogres. The power of the spell, combined with the giants' susceptibility to fire and some misfortune on the part of the giants, result in devastating consequences... All within the spell ... and this means most of the giant/ogre force...are blown to pieces, if not ashes!
Gaerys and Arqos charge forward to attack two remaining ogres. The ranger splits the skull of the first, while Arqos does a huge amount of damage to the second -- which is then finished by a crossbow bolt from a dwarf.
Brax drops his hammer on his toe, while Jinx casts protective magic upon himself.
Brax: 2 damage from critical miss
Only two ogres remain...the two at the back of the field. Seeing what the party has done, it is clear even to those dim-witted beasts that their chances are not good. They toss down their clubs and raise their arms. Through the howling wind, a shout of surrender can be heard:
HUMAN...WE NO FIGHT, YOU LET US PASS! WE LEAVE JARL ARMY...WE DISAPPEAR - YOU NO SEE US AGAIN.
The party has impressively made short work of their opponents. They must now dispense with the surrendering ogres and otherwise make their next move - the Jarl's forces certainly will.

HP:
Brax: -2
Arqos: -13*
*Arqos learned during the rest that the wounds from touching the yeti's cursed axe did not heal magically, but only a little at a time through rest.

Arqos shouts back at the ogres. "R'HLLOR IS MERCIFUL! LEAVE THIS PLACE AND—"
"Hold on," interrupts Gaerys. "They might be able to give us more information about the rift. Let's find out what they know before we let them leave."
"Right. QUICKLY! TELL US WHAT YOU KNOW OF THE RIFT, AND OF JARL AND HIS FORCES! THAT IS THE PRICE OF ALLOWING YOUR SURRENDER!"

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Andor says to the group, "Perhaps they know of another way in as well? Don't forget to scan the sky above." Andor keeps an eye on his surrounding including from above. Andor moves to his right a bit so he is in the snow gulley/ditch but able to see the ogres still so he can utilize the terrain to shield him a bit. He felt claustrophobic piled in the spot they are in.

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Brax picks up his hammer spits on his hands and considers throwing the hammer at the ogres. "Best be feelin luck I'm in a forgivin mood." he signals for the other two dwarves to hold their fire. "Be sure if we see yer ogre hides back here in Jarl's army we'll shoot ya dead." he warns the ogres while giving them the evil eye. Clint Eastwood Style

Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
The little druid will move forwards slowly, his Shadowcat accompanying him.
When about 30' away he will ask the ogres about the rift, where the leader of the Giants lairs, how many dragons are within the place and where they are laired, if the whole rift is on alert now the plague of insects is within the top part of the complex, how many prisoners are there and where they are held and who guards them. His scimitar will be drawn in defence

Andor stays put if the gear he has won't support his attempt at utilizing the terrain to better his cover/defenses. Andor says, "We best be quick on talking to these ogres before the next pile of critters come out of that rift."
Re: Siege of the Rift (G2 Part 4)
Round 2
The party acknowledges the surrender of the two ogres. Some move closer to them, some ask questions regarding the Jarl and his forces, others watch the two ogres verrry closely. Andor wisely, very wisely, watches the skies.
It is clear the brutes are intimidated by the overwhelming might of the party...and Brax's intimidating stare. They may be dumb but not stupid.
Gaerys and Jinx demand information from the ogres as a condition of allowing them to escape. They blurt out responses, seeming to answer to the best of their ability.
JARL VERY MIGHTY AND RICH! MANY CARLS SERVE HIM, AND MANY GIANTKIND COME PAY TRIBUTE. HE HIRE MANY OGRES TO SERVE HIM. HIS QUEEN SPEAK TO THE DARK GODS. SHE BLESS SOME FROST GIANT CARLS WITH SACRED SKINPAINT. JARL HAVE TWO DRAGONS, POLAR BEARS, WINTER WOLVES...GREAT TREASURE.
SECRET WAY INTO THE RIFT IS THROUGH HOLE IN BOTTOM OF RIFT...WHISPERS ABOUT GREAT TREASURE DOWN THERE TOO...JARL NEVER LET US GO
WE NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPEN TO RIFT...BUGS COME...THEY BITE...WE RUN!
THAT ALL WE KNOW...WE PASS NOW...WAR WITH HUMANS OVER FOR US...WE RETURN TO OUR HILLS TO HUNT MAMMOTH...
The ogres move until they are about even with the party. They are not attacking at all. They are trying to slip away.
