As the members of SST 11 take a look a the situation, several attempt to figure out some good tactics to defeat the enemy while Koda also decides to use his Talent Ability to see what 'the Spirits' can tell him....

Koda pulls out a small amulet and holds it in his hand as he closes his eyes and starts quietly talking to the Spirits and his senses reach out and study the area ahead of them. He can tell that Major Stone's dispositions are essentially correct; the enemy lies mostly in a line let to right from the left of the pillbox to the intersection of the roads (corso on the map) to the right and number perhaps 40 souls. He can also tell that the pillbox was NOT built here and has only recently come to lie on this particular patch of Earth....as if from nowhere.....

At about the same time Koda activates his power and all the Allied Talents feel/smell/hear his Power being activated, machiengun fire from an MG 42 in the pillbox opens up and tears into the corner of the Farmhouse they are all ducking behind, frighteningly close to where Koda is. The Talents look at each other and all have the same thought....if there's a German Talent in that Pillbox, he just felt Koda's power being used as well....

Bob speaks up and says, "I think if Jimmy and I take 'Gloria' and move out towards the Railway Station over there, that should draw their fire and attention, I can pound them with the 20 millimeter while doing so....that should help some, I'd wager".

During and after Koda's report and Bob's suggestion, Phil and Nahum mull over the tactics and while Heuron isn't really able to come up with anything, Chisholm realizes the drainage ditch is indeed their best bet. If they use Stone's mortars to put some smoke on the slit trenches and then send Bob and Jimmy out on the left flank, that should occupy the attention of the Germans enough for SST 11, followed by most of what was left of D company to move up the ditch and then when they were parallel to the slit trenches, take them from the flanks. Chisholm gives this assessment and Stone is quickly on board and telling his men to gather up all their gear and get ready. Hyde-Smythe waves Bob and Jimmy to get into 'Gloria' and likewise makes sure his weapons are ready while having SST 11 members do the same.

With that done, soon the sounds of 'Gloria' moving out can be heard and the little armored vehicle is soon moving out towards the railway station while its 20mm cannon is pounding away at the German lines. The distinctive sound of multiple MG 42 opening up and lighting up the side of the vehicle with sparks quickly adds to the cacophony of sound and Stone orders the half-dozen men staying behind with the pair of Mortars to start firing their smoke shells and then calls out to Hyde-Smythe, "Let's move Captain!"

Just as everyone starts to head out down the drainage ditch, there is the terrible sound of screams coming from a couple of wounded Canadians out in the field as Gloria unknowingly runs over them....the tall grass had hid them from sight and the scene is enough to sap some of the vigor and energy from everyone watching*. Stone gets them back on task with a "GO!" and they are off....

The trip up the ditch is slow and nerve-wracking, but no booby-traps are found and after what seemed like an eternity, they are right past the Olive grove and near the hedges and pensione building that lies at the middle of the German Slit-Trench lines. Taking a cautious peek over the sides; they can tell the Germans have no idea where they are and smoke is covering most of the far left (past the Pillbox) and far right (intersection of the roads) trenches. The trenches closest to them each show groupings of a dozen German troops with a pair of MG 42 crews to either side (4 total). A fifth MG 42 was obviously in the Pillbox. Stone motions to Hyde-Smythe and rest of SST 11....

"Okay, you boys take the left trench and that bloody Pillbox and we'll take the right to the intersection of the roads. Good luck!", and then the Major is leading his 20 troops in an assault. SST 11 looks out and sees their objectives spread out over 30 yards, more or less in a line perpendicular to the drainage ditch where they currently are....

Closest to them is a trench with 3 German Riflemen lying prone, about 5 yards away. Some 5 yards past that is a pair of German soldiers manning an MG 42 machinegun in a small trench. Then 5 yards past them is a another small trench with 2 soldiers, one holding an MP 40 SMG and the other holding some kind of rifle with a side-loading magazine they'd never seen before. 5 yards past them is another small trench with another MG 42 crew and then 5 yards past them is another small trench with 3 more German Riflemen. Finally, 5 yards past the last trench is the Pillbox; which fortunately did NOT have a slit opening facing their direction.

OOC: I hope that all made sense...but basically over 30 yards are 6 groups of enemies; 5 small trenches (about 6 feet wide and 3 feet deep) holding 2 or 3 German Troops over 25 yards distance and then 30 yards away is the metal pillbox, looking something like this:

On the far side of the Pillbox and to the far side of the trenches being assaulted by Stone and D company are more Germans, but they are currently covered in smoke, so it's hard to tell how many, etc. There is also the Pensione in front of you, from which no movement or sounds can be heard and in the distance, several 2 story houses, likewise, no sounds or movements can be seen/heard from.

*Everyone loses 2 WP from the demoralizing sight....

Porcupine
John crouches in the ditch, scowling toward the pillbox. I wonder if we've got an Enemy Talent that tele-whatzis that pillbox into place?
Signaling to Chisholm to hold position, John lobs a grenade into the nearest trench.

Koda will take a chance, at the explosion, he will pop up on his knees, enhance his javelin and throw it at the pillbox, using a luck point and them diving down prone immediately. He knows he is cutting down his chance with the snapshot, but he hopes the spirits will help.

Phil tosses a grenade towards a farther trench, aiming for the one about 20 yards away (containing the second MG 42 crew).

After this, he will turn around and watch the pensione building for any signs of a sniper coming to an upper window in response to the commotion.

Nado wonders what would happen if the pillbox were hit by a bolt of lightning. All that steel...would anyone inside be touching it? He can't resist finding out.

If the weather is appropriate, Nado will call down a lightning strike on the pillbox. If the weather isn't right, he'll do something else—maybe lob a grenade or lay down suppressing fire, or just fire his gun at any enemy he sees.

The members of SST 11 began their assault on the German slit trenches with Porcupine tossing a primed grenade right over the lip of the drainage ditch and everyone else exploding into motion right after it went off....

In a quick move, SSGT Nahum Chisholm was over the top and diving down into the first slit trench, which now had 3 pulped German Riflemen in it and the veteran NCO saw no threat and quickly turned his attention towards the next group of enemies in line as he dropped down low into the ditch....

From his position in the drainage ditch, Phil Heuron toss a primed grenade at the closest MG 42 team, noticing out of the corner of his eye that Battaglia was doing the exact same thing. They had time to catch each other's eye and grin and then both turned to see that one of the 'nades never went off, but the other one did and it took out the gunner and his loader and they immediately felt better with the powerful weapon out of action...

Captain Hyde-Smythe stood up tall and straight and leveled his M1 Garand at the German officer or NCO with the MP 40 crouching in the slit trench some 15 yards away or so and he fired a shot and cursed when his shot just missed and it caused the German leader and the man next to him with the unfamiliar looking rifle with a side-loading magazine to both turn his way....

All of the Talents felt Koda and Nado activate their powers and both rose up and attempted to utilize their abilities at the same target, the pillbox, when the strangest thing happened....

A strange Talent Power could be felt by all of the members of SST 11 immediately before Koda and then Nado unleashed their attacks and the metal pillbox suddenly turned into a metal suitcase with a loud POP and three men were suddenly visible, just standing in the field. One held the MG 42, one held belts of ammo and the last was holding the metal suitcase.....

The man holding the MG 42 was suddenly completely knocked off his feet as a glowing, metal javelin slammed into him and thru him and sent him flying back at least 5 yards before dropping to the ground, CLEARLY never to rise again as Koda's closed eyes and hand gripped his medicine pouch and sent the weapon flying his way with the aim of the Spirits....

Right next to Koda, Tom Nado stood up and he called forth a Lightning Bolt from the numerous clouds in the sky and a bluish-white arc of light came slamming down into the man holding the belts of ammo and sent him convulsing horribly for a moment, before he fell to the ground, smoking and never to move again....

The man with the metal case suddenly took off at him speed in a crouching run towards the two story houses....

As all the was going down, the vehicle known as 'Gloria' was trading fire with the second MG 42 team, so that pair of Germans never noticed the action going down to their left.....

Phil, whirled around to see if anything was happening from the Pensione near the irrigation ditch they had just launched their attack from and while he saw nothing from that building, he DID see a brief flash from the upper story of one of the buildings off behind them, at the edge of the town. Perhaps a reflection off a scope or muzzle?......

OOC: Okay, there are two Germans turning towards all of you some 15 yards away (10 yards from Chisholm), one with an MP 40, one with an unfamiliar weapon; and then two more Germans manning an MG 42 some 20 yards away who are shooting at the Gloria and don't seem to notice any of you yet. There is a German, running in a crouch towards the 2 story buildings, holding a metal suitcase that apparently can turn into a Bunker and Phil ONLY noticed a flash of light, most likely meaning SOMEBODY is on the second floor of the middle two story house on the map...this is about 75 yards away

Phil will attempt to activate his powers (spending 4WP to increase the chances). He then focuses his talent to freeze solid the location where he saw the glint of light in the second floor of the two-storey house. [damaging version]

Approx. 7:20 AM, December 21, 1943, Outskirts of Ortona, Italy

In the outskirts of the Italian town of Ortona, the fighting between the Allies and the Axis continued in the early morning of the cold, wet, drizzly day....

Tom Nado took aim at the fleeing Ubermensch with his metal box that became a pillbox and just as he started to pull the trigger of his 'Johnny Gun', he felt a sharp pain in his side as something 'stung' him and his five round burst of .30-06 rounds went wide to the right of the fleeing man and he cursed as he fell to one knee in pain*....

Phil Heuron saw the flash of the sniper rifle from the second floor and he heard his teammate Nado curse in pain as he was hit and a second later, Phil's Talent Power was activated and he sent a ray of icy-blue light into the window the sniper was using and saw the weapon 'freeze' in place and presumably, the man holding the weapon did too....

Nahum Chisholm activated his Hyper Dexterity Talent Power and suddenly his form seemed to move in a blur as he cut loose a 5 round burst of .45 slugs at the German solider holding some kind of weapon with a side-mounted magazine some 10 yards away and he riddle the soldier and dropped him to the ground. A moment later, the American NCO was diving into a slit trench himself...

Koda primed a grenade and tossed it at the MG-42 crew soem 20 yards away who were banging away at 'Brilliant Bob' and 'The Maple Leaf Kid' in Bob's modified Universal Carrier vehicle and his throw was right on the money as it dropped into the slit trench and with a muted 'boom' it messily took out the MG team...

John Porcupine called on his Earth-Bending Talent and for a long moment he almost didn't make the connection (rolled a 10 EXACTLY on the Will Power dice); but then he felt it and he attempt to rise up some rocks for the fleeing German Talent to run into (calling this the 'Attack' version of the Power...but unfortunately, I rolled a 13 on the PER/Search to 'hit' and needed a 15 at Medium Range, sorry man!) but he wasn't able to get the rocks QUITE into the fleeing Ubermenschen's path and he cursed as he saw the German scramble into the two story building that nod had ice all around an upstairs window....

A German officer or NCO with an MP-40 fired a couple of bursts towards CAPT Hyde-Smythe and Mark Battaglia, but the other called up his Talent Power of Shields and was able to deflect the incoming rounds with the bubble-like energy shield he summoned up, just in time....

Captian Hyde-Smythe then stood tall and sighted down his M1 Garand and put a pair of .30-06 rounds into the German leader and dropped him to the ground, where he moved for a moment on the ground before going very stiff and still....

A long moment went by, before everyone in SST 11 realized that all of their opponents on their side had either been dealt with or had fled. Turning to the other side, they could see that Major Stone's men had cleared out their side as well, though they suffered a couple of casualties. A long moment later, Bob and Jimmy rolled up in 'Gloria' and as Farraday got out, he quickly moved to treat Nado and one of the soldiers that had made the attack with Stone's team, a PVT named Massey.

As this was happening, Nahum moved to the body of the solider with the unfamiliar weapon and he soon found a rifle with a side-mounted magazine, and was set for full-automatic fire of the standard issue 7.92mm German Rifle round in a 20 round box magazine. The weapon was eerily similar to the Johnson LMG....

OOC: Nado is Wounded, the 'Pill Box' Talent got away, everybody else is dealt with....

Nahum Chisholm

Nahum takes the new weapon and examines it, then shows it to the others. "He had, this looks like a German version of the Johnsom LMG, but smaller for standard issue maybe. This would be nasty if they can get a lot of them issued."

Approx. 7:30 AM thru 3:00 PM, December 21, 1943, Ortona, Italy

In the aftermath of the successful assault, several members of SST 11 explore the immediate area and discover that it's secure and they've succeeded in clearing the area out from German control. Koda retrieves his Javelin and also grabs a German 'potato masher' stick grenade*; Phil and Porcupine find that the sniper had been frozen to his demise in the building but the 'Pillbox' Talent had escaped into the more dense city blocks of Ortona which lay close behind the Pensione building....

All gathered back again near Major Stone who smiled and heartily slapped them each on the back saying with admiration in his voice; "I say, that was MARVELOUS! You're all bloody madmen of the first order and it's an honor to know you!"**He is soon in contact with the rest of the Loyal Eddies and the first group of blocks are rapidly captured by the Canadians, now that the path into the city is clear. The men of SST 11 have the time to interact with the grateful members of Company D and have a decent lunch. It's not until about 2 in the afternoon that a runner comes up to them with a message from Colonel Jefferson.....

Hyde-Smythe takes the message, reads it quickly and then turns to his men. "Alright fellows, Colonel Jefferson wants us to move into Ortona and report to Captain Thomas the commander of Company A of the Seaforth Highlanders. Gather your gear, let's get to it." Everyone quickly packs up their gear and using the Universal Carriers for a short bit, they soon find themselves moving into the large town/small city on foot. A significant portion has been captured by the Canadians already, but the narrow stone streets and numerous 2 and 3 story buildings has the men nervous and looking every which direction. Here and there, bullet holes or smashed apart walls and/or roofs can be seen, showing testament to the mortar and artillery and gunfire sounds which can be heard coming mostly from the North telling them all that hard fighting continues to be happening. Civilians can bee seen occasionally looking out of mostly shattered windows or rushing quickly thru rubble-strewn streets to get from one building to another...

Soon the sounds of fighting are getting much louder and they can see some Canadian troops scrambling about here and there, some bringing back badly wounded men to an Aid Station. They can see a tall 3 story structure with some damage to parts of it and this is where they are soon directed towards as the HQ of Company A, Seaforth Highlanders. They quickly see a lean, muscular man with a hard face and Captain's bars barking out orders to several runners and to a harried looking radioman manning the Communications gear. He looks over and sees then men of SST 11 and waves them over.....

"Captain Thomas, thanks for coming....we've got a bit of a strange situation here....follow me", he says and he moves quickly up a flight of stairs. Hyde-Smythe follows after him, as does the rest of the Talents. When he reaches the 3rd and top floor, he ushers them into a room, saying "Stay low and to the sides of the windows" and proceeds to do exactly that. The room was obviously a bedroom with a bed covered in dusty sheets in the center of the room as the Captain moves towards one of the two shot-out windows and motions for everyone to do the same to get a look at the immediate area. When they do, they see the following....
Ortona1.pdf
(608.28 KiB) Downloaded 19 times
(You all are in the dark building close to the center of the bottom of the map....it's a 3 story building and can see everything on the map, the two 'boxes' at the intersections are where Thomas points too)....

"I've got half a dozen men down hard and bleeding, as you can see from here. There-", he points to the right intersection where 3 Canadian troops can be seen lying on the street, bloody and barely moving; "-is where Private Gibb stepped on a mine. Corporal Roberts and Private Stottomeyer ran to drag him out of harm's way while we gave them covering fire. They set off another mine when they reached him and then finally, Lance Corporal Wade, a Medic, crawled up to try and help them. He sat off yet another mine and took shrapnel across the back, but was able to get back to our lines where he's being treated for his wounds. Here's the thing.....Wade never saw any mines, tripwires..nothing. He told me that he was able to talk to Roberts and Stottomeyer and they saw nothing either. I've combed that whole intersection with my field glasses-"; here he takes off his binoculars and passes them to Hyde-Smythe; "-and I see nothing either."

"Now down there-"; and he points to the left intersection where another pair of Canadian troops are lying on the street, bloody with injuries as well. "PVTs Hastings and O'Hanlon....same thing. Hit mines that we can't see at all." Thomas lets out a frustrated sigh, "Jerry lets us move down the streets to the intersection with no shots fired, but when I tried to flank 'em; a couple of squads with MG 42s and those bloody new auto-rifles they have let us have it. I'm sure you saw some of my hurt men when you came in here. On top of THAT, I'm getting orders to keep the advance going.....but I'm not gonna keep sending my men into a bloody mine-field they can't even see. I'm thinking this MUST be some kinda Talent Powers at work here...which is why I called for you. Can you lot help me? I need to get my men out of there while they're still breathing and then take these bloody streets."

As the Captain wraps up, the Talents can all feel the tingle/smell the odor/hear the sounds of first one, then a second unfamiliar Talent Power being employed, but no immediate effects of those Powers can be seen.....

*The Praise and the Knowledge of a job well done means everyone gets 1 WP back.

**The German stick grenade is a little less powerful than your standard 'nade, but it can be thrown a bit further. (See Character Sheet for stats)

"Do you mind that I look Captain?"

Koda move to the rubble on the Left side of the building, and getting low and taking off his helment and using cement dust he pads his hair and face untill grey (or whatever the color of background)

Using the paitience he devolped in hunting seals he will slowly move to the side of the opening with his eye closed, untill his face is facing the 3 story building across the street with no obstruction, he will slit open his eyes and ask the spirits to assist him with his sight and look across to the building for anything.

From looking at the setting there has to be a place where the mad bomber is creating mine like explosions that he can see both locations. The 3 story building on the map is it, unless they have a Clairvoyant with him, but first things first.
