Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
Re: Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
Swilbosh will move up to engage with his battle axe. He hopes someone will guard the rear in his stead.

We will need an attack and damage roll together with that action declaration, just in case Swilbosh finds something to engage his axe with as the round progresses.

Ogirdor lets his arrows fly as the birds start to attack:Vargr1105 wrote: As Ozborn advances towards the doors the gaze of the crows, in particular the rather well-grown leader type, seems to focus on him intently. As he takes a step forward he breaks some unseen, imaginary borderline that the avians set out and...they react.
The flock master bellows out an extended, fierce crowing which Andrin can understand as his enchantment of animal communication is still in effect.
"KIIIIIILL!!!" shouts the crow leader.
The air around him on the tower battlement's edge explodes with flapping wings, falling black feathers and corvish battle-cries as the flock en masse rises to do battle.

If possible, Andrin jumps forward and smashes his oaken staff at the crow leader.
"So be it!" he shouts.
To hit with staff: [1d20] = 16
Damage with staff: [1d6] = 6
OOC: Now that's one good attack routine!

Re: Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
He was half expecting exactly this, but Ozborn is still startled by the sudden, noisy explosion of feathers and confusion. Almost automatically, he spins, raises his short bow and fires off two shots, aiming for the biggest crow or raven or whatever it is, assuming it must be the leader. Somewhere in the back of his mind, in the weird calm that always overlays the panic of frenzied action, he wonders if Andrin can really talk to birds or if it's all some sort of affectation. Either way, he was right – clearly the birds did not want them here. He wonders if getting skewered by a giant beak will hurt much...

ooc: I have a feeling the birds are coming right at me since I'm the one approaching the door. If possible, I'd like to edge my way toward the north wall to get my back to it, so I can prevent getting surrounded. Or better yet, in the doorframe (if it's deep enough) to prevent attacks from directly above. Not sure how far away I was when they launched their attack, though.

Leaping into action, Thurinor runs after Ozborn and lets loose his well-aimed crossbow at the bird nearest to the thief's position. He whistles his best and prettiest birdsong as he goes, trying to attract some of the dark fowl his way.
Crossbow to-hit: [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17; Damage S-M/L: [1d4+1] = 2+1 = 3/[1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4

Day 4 - Early Afternoon - The Eastern Platform
Round 1
Party Initiative: [1d6] = 1, NPC/Monster Initiative: [1d6] = 3
Segments: Ogirdor/Ozborn 0th, Crows 1st, Thurinor 2nd, Party 3rd
Going back through the posts I realized there seems to be some confusion about the outlay of the scene. The crows are not within range of any melee attacks when combat begins, they are on the edge of the tower's battlements looking down, like being on top a tall house's roof. I will assume described melee attacks are delayed until (or if) a raven gets within range this round.
Also, I think we may have lost Malone. Buzz has not posted since mid-January and his last visit to the forums was early this month.
As the birds begins to fly Ogirdor rains his readied arrows upon the rising flock. Only one meets a mark among the mass of fast creatures and a crow falls back behind the battlement fully impaled by the shaft.
It is clear the attacking birds are swooping down towards Ozborn, the foremost member of the party and one closest to the doors. Keeping his cool at seeing the approaching enemies he looses two arrows at the large crow leader still sitting open-winged on the battlements. The creature easily dodges the first by bobbing away, but that put it square on the path of the second arrow. It drive deep into where the right wing meets the body and the crow leader crowing cry to action turns into one of deep pain- Still, it doesn't fall.
Then the flying ravens fall upon Ozborn. 6 birds perform fly-by attacks trying to wound him with their beaks...
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 16, Damage: [1d2] = 2
[1d10] = 6
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 18, Damage: [1d2] = 1
[1d10] = 7
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 11, Damage: [1d2] = 1
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 9, Damage: [1d2] = 1
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 19, Damage: [1d2] = 1
[1d10] = 3
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 7, Damage: [1d2] = 1
...and a few find a mark.
Seeing his companion surrounded by crows Thurinor attempts to aid him with a well-placed crossbow bolt. One of the large birds flying around the warrior-thief is hit and tumbles to the ground. but it still moves.
Next to rescue comes Swilbosh. Leaving his investigations of the second passage he runs to Ozborn's vicinity and flails his axe around. The crows easily avoid his clumsy reptilian blows though. But the distraction allows Ozborn to edge his way to the doors.
Andrin cries out a challenge to the crow leader and the creatures looks at him, the one-who-speaks, with its beady, hate filled eyes and appears to adopt a posture to jump off the battlement.
Andrin can use his staff attack roll for this turn to swipe at the crow leader if he comes within range next round. That is, if he wants to assume the bird is going to attack him. Or can declare a new action with a new roll. Player's choice.
Stonjuz fumbles about getting hold of his staff and trying to get on an appropriate battle stance.
Since Stonjuz's roll was so crappy and no foes were in range I feel this is a better interpretation of what happened rather than having him waddle to where Ozborn and Swilbosh are.
While all this is happening Malone looks around dumbfounded at events and does not react.
End of Round 1

Re: Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
Aaaaaagh! It turns out getting jabbed by a giant crow beak does hurt. A lot...
Ozborn braces himself, back to the door. At least there's one side of him these flying bastards won't be able to get at. He drops his bow to the ground, useless with all these beady-eyed demons in his face, and draws his short sword. He lashes out at the next one to pass within striking distance:
Ozborn attack with Short Sword, THAC0 20: [1d20 +2] = 19+2 = 21, damage vs s/m: [1d6 +3] = 4+3 = 7, damage vs L: [1d8 +3] = 1+3 = 4
He hears a satisfying thunk! as the blade connects, though it's hard to tell with what in the confusion of feathers.
"Gahhhh!" he yells, stupidly, unable to find words in the moment. He is peripherally aware of the others rushing to help. There's a fraction of second when the feathers obscuring his vision part and he glimpses Malone standing motionless several yards away. Some help here! he starts to think, but is again enveloped in the feathery maelstrom.
ooc: I have now coined the phrase "feathery maelstrom."

Thurinor drops his crossbow and pulls his sword ringing from its sheath, his smiling face clearly enjoying the situation. He takes a stance a bit in front and to the side of the spot where Stonjuz stands in defense of Ozborn, waiting for one of the dark fowl to come in range of his ready blade. "Bats and birds, birds and bats... all... fall... down!"

Day 4 - Early Afternoon - The Eastern Platform
Round 2
Party Initiative: [1d6] = 6, NPC/Monster Initiative: [1d6] = 5
Segments: Ogirdor 2nd, Party 5th, Ozborn/Crows/Thurinor 6th, Stonjuz 10th
Machine-like, Ogirdor keeps reloading his bow and sending arrows flying.
Oh my! I have just discovered the rules for using missile attacks on targets engaged in melee. Turns out the shooter can't select the specific target and the actual victim of each attack is determined randomly. This means there is a 1 in 6 chance any of Ogirdor's arrows will hit Swilbosh (assuming, of course, it bypasses his AC). So let's check for the trio of arrows in order:
[1d6] = 5
[1d6] = 6
[1d6] = 2
All good!
One of Ogirdor's arrows manages to find a crow and hits with such violence the bird start rolling even as it falls to the stone floor, where it bounces a couple of times before remaining deathly still.
By the way, are shooters keeping track of their ammo? That's a lot of missile flying about there.
Surrounded by ravens Swilbosh heaves his battleaxe and strike a dedly blow against one of the creatures, decapitating it in mid-flight. The headless body still beats its wings once last time beffore plummeting down and slamming on the ground. It twitches and bleeds messily for an extended period, reminding the onlookers of what happens when the swarthy-skinned Baklunish people slay chickens for their dinner.
Andrin, with readied druid staff, taunts the crow leader. Stonjuz begins moving to where injured Ozborn lies, avoiding the melee in the center courtyard, while Thurinor exchanges weapons and moves to delve into it in a position between Ozborn and the birds.
The birds flying around Swilbosh take pecks at him...
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 7, Damage: [1d2] = 2
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 12, Damage: [1d2] = 1
Crow Attack: [1d20] = 19, Damage: [1d2] = 1
[1d10] = 1
OUCH! Sorry saalaria, them's the brakes.
Musical Theme: The Blinding of Swilbosh
Only one of the birds manages to wound the lizardman but it does so in a most gruesome manner. Diving for Swilbosh's face the crow strike and flies of with a tasty, crimson morsel on its beak: ONE OF SWILBOSH'S EYES, pulled straight off its socket!
I'll leave saalaria to role-play Swilbosh's reaction at having one of his eyes gouged out. Let's see which one he lost:
[1d100] = 2
It was the Left one.
Musical Theme: The Giant Crow's Flight
The large leader of the crows launches himself off the tower making a beeline for Andrin, huge wings extended, long sharp beak hungry to rend the half-elf's flesh. But Andrin is ready.
"Come over, sparrow!" he shouts as the flying creature is nearing. Just as the leader of the crows arrives the druids swings his staff of stout oak wood and slams it on the huge bird putting all of his force behind it. Andrin is sure he hears something crack in the body of the overgrown bird. Still, the leader tries to drive his sword-like beak into the half-elf's body...
Crow Leader Attack: [1d20] = 5, Damage: [1d4+2] = 3+2 = 5
...but it proves to be a very pitiful attempt, the druid remain unharmed. The crow leader caws noisily in a desperate manner as it beats its wings to gain altitude.
PM Sent.
Bracing himself by the doors Ozborn drops his bow to the ground and draws his short sword, ready to lash out at the next bird that passes within striking distance. None does. Thurinor finally gets in position and swipes at a flying crow while mumbling "Bats and birds, birds and bats... all... fall... down!". His shortsword almost rips off the wing of one of the birds who crows piteously and begins flying about is a bobbing, near-uncontrolled manner.
Meanwhile its hurt companion that was lying on the floor takes flight again and rises up, up above the din of battle.
Stonjuz gets to Ozborn's side by the doors and begins reciting the incantation that provide's Boccob's healing powers. If the dwarf's prayers were heard, the fighter-thief doesn't feel much of a difference.
While all this is happening Malone still looks around dumbfounded at events and does not react.
End of Round 2

Hit Points and Conditions updated: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=652&p=14202#p14202
Situation: Ozborn and Stonjuz are by the tower doors. Swilbosh has one eye less and is in melee range of 2 crows flying about. The crow leader and the crow that was on the ground are flaying upwards and a last crow is flying a bit erratically with a screwed wing and apparently attemptign to do the same. Atop the battlements the smaller crows heads are still observing the scene

Re: Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
Andrin steps back and immediately stops attacking when he hears what the crow leader shouts to his brethren. Being a druid, he never kills animals if there's no need for it, even when they are as despicable as these crows. He doesn't inform his comrades though as he doesn't want to confuse them when they probably still need to defend themselves in case some of the crowes don't pay attention to their leader's words.

Stay on em lads! These turkeys are gonna give up. Just ...gotta....outlast 'em.
Stonjuz will attempt the exact same action as last round with better results i hope.
healing the rogue and if need be, fighting defensively
heal [1d8] = 3 atk [1d20] = 14 dmg [1d6] = 5

Re: Action Thread #7 - The Other Side of the Mountains
Ozborn is confused for a moment, having misread the situation (read: the player is confused, having misread the DM's post for round 1.) : he had been sure the crows were right on his back as he reached the door and drew his sword. Now he finds himself out of range with his bow lying on the ground. Stonjuz stands next to him performing some kind of healing trick, for which he is grateful. Suddenly, to his horror, he sees the lizardman, who was clearly rushing to his aid, get his eye plucked out by one of the crows. Procan's Swarthy Beard! he shrieks inwardly, now even more alarmed (if that's possible). What to do? His options race through his mind - if he picks up his bow to shoot again, he loses valuable time and risks hitting Swilbosh or someone else, due to the random nature of firing into melee that occurs to him. But he must help if he can. There's nothing for it, then... Ozborn rushes to Swilbosh's side to try and skewer a crow if he can:
Ozborn attack with Short Sword, THAC0 20: [1d20 +2] = 16+2 = 18, damage vs s/m: [1d6 +3] = 2+3 = 5, damage vs L: [1d8 +3] = 8+3 = 11
ooc: I didn't add in any bonus for charging, though not sure I'll need it - if there's anything to hit by the time I get there...
