Aristide - Rogue Deluxe

Aristide draws his sword and follows whoever in the group is close by, trying to pinpoint the source of the bad smell.

Tasrem goes straight to bed, and sleeps as much as he can until someone wakes him up.

Seeing no one to fight in an honorable duel—or at least an entertaining brawl—Diego returns to the tent, where he hopes some rest will settle his stomach.

Taranna stays mounted and trots about the camp puking here and there for good measure. She'll keep an eye out for anything odd.

All right. Let's get going! Thanks, everyone, for your patience.

A chill wind rolls across the Sind Desert as the night drags on, and you settle into a weary watchfulness. The guards mutter to themselves, casting occasional suspicious glances in your direction.

Zelaz, high in the air, can't see much beyond the light of the campfires.

About an hour later, your stomachs start to turn again as the same vile odor you smelled earlier returns in full force. The guards, and a few of the merchants who are still awake, start to chatter among themselves, then start to curse in their own tongue. The sergeant, Dakhial, appears to be ordering two men to investigate in the direction of the smell. They disappear into the darkness beyond the light of the campfire.

A few seconds later, you hear a hiss, then more cursing. Someone is crying out in pain. Then, to your surprise, the clang of steel on steel rings through the night air. One of the guards is crying out in utter bewilderment.

Roikos: Cleric
Upon Penny's back, the Cleric heels her into a charge toward the direction of ringing steel.

Combat round 1

You arrive at the scene of the commotion at the same time as several other guards bearing torches. (Is that convenient or what?) One of the caravan guards, hair tousled, half his armor missing, bleeding profusely, appears to have turned coat and is attacking one of his fellow guardsmen. The other guard is parrying the blows as best he can, with a look of confused terror on his grim, ugly face. The rest of the guards, normally a foul-tempered lot, who would have put a sword through the rogue guard under normal circumstances, seem to be either exercising incredible restraint, or are simply too confused to know what to make of it all. The foul smell appears to recede, drifting away from the merchant campfire, and in the direction of your campfire.

Roikos: Cleric

Roikos hold his steed behind Taranna, waiting for her spell to reveal what it will. Grateful for the convenient torches and bright moonlight, Roikos readies his attack, thankful he finished his prayers for the day.

Diego follows after the stench of evil, sensing that it, not the strange-acting guard, is the true threat.

Combat round 2

Taranna, with Roikos and Aristide standing close behind, chants a detect evil spell in the direction of your campsite. Assuming she shares this with the group, she detects a small creature, about the size of a cat, but with wings, rummaging around in your belongings. Diego can not yet see it, though.

Zelaz works his charms on the deranged caravan guard. The guard stops for a moment, a look of confusion and indecision on his face. He turns to the Glantrian mage, then smiles. I like you, he declares in accented common. He then nods in the direction of his fellow guard. Kill him for you, I will. He lunges again with renewed ferocity, his comrades looking on in horrified silence. If only there were some kind of spell one could use to restrain a person...

Zelaz is taken aback! No you fool. I need him alive. Just stand back and let me handle the other guard.

Diego Francisco Villablanca de la Lobos struggles in vain to find the evil little creature. "Show yourself and face my blade, you mischievous little varmit!" he cries, waving the point of his rapier in the vicinity of where the rummaging seems to be happening.
