Fruldrick, Halfling Haberdasher

Fruldrick eyes the spears that have just been hurled at Heltel; sizing them up and gauging if they landed far enough away from the mad-man to risk retrieving one.

Still compelled by the evil writings on the menhir, Heltel presses Rolfo, swinging his mace with brutal force and oblivious of any others about to attack him.

Rolfo, after momentarily backing away, realizes that the shaman is not all there. The dwarf stands his ground and swings his staff at Heltel, intending only to knock him out so that he can be tied up and dealt with. "I'm greatly sorry about this, laddie..."

OOC: I put in a claim for a hauberk that appears to be left over from the room with the tar-belching statue. For Rolfo, of course, not Heltel. I leave it up to the DM if Rolfo is actually wearing it now, since that would be another retcon. If nothing else, Rolfo might die, leaving the hauberk in easy reach... ;)

Initiative
Round 3
Kunno: 16
Bronn: 15
Heltel: 14 - Compelled Through round 4
Goratrix: 13
Crow: 11
Rolfo: 10
Uriel: 8
Darvin: 3
Kunno stands watching the drama continuing to use his father for protection.
Bronn slings a stone at Heltel: Attack with sling: to hit [1d20] = 6; damage [1d4] = 3 but the stone comes out at an odd angle and skips off into the water

Heltel rears back for a vicious swing on Rolfo when the wind catches his cloak and blows it up over his mace. The mace becomes entangled as he brings it forward nearly tripping the crazed shaman over.
[1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2 Heltel's Attack on Rolfo
[1d4+2] = 4+2 = 6 Heltel's Fumble Roll

Goratrix stands protectively over Kunno hoping that someone steps in and stops this insane shaman.

Crow throws his spear at Heltel: Crow ranged attack with spear: to hit, [1d20-1] = 6-1 = 5; danage [1d8] = 4, but it falls short landing hard in the sandy beach. He then pulls and draws his flail.

Rolfo, after momentarily backing away, realizes that the shaman is not all there. The dwarf stands his ground and swings his staff at Heltel, intending only to knock him out so that he can be tied up and dealt with. "I'm greatly sorry about this, laddie..." [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 Rolfo's Staff Subdual Attack on Heltel
Rolfo's attack comes very close to hitting Heltel but the shaman's flailing with his mace and his cloak brings him just below the staff's heavy strike.

Uriel waits out the battle along with Goratrix and Kunno

Darvin throws his spear at Heltel: Darvin Attack with Spear: to hit, [1d20-1] = 11-1 = 10 | damage [1d8] = 6, and his spear flies true piercing through the crazed shaman's back through his internal organs and out to the beach below skewering him to the ground. Darvin then to be safe draws his short sword. Heltel has a glimpse of sanity as his mind returns to him before his body collapses lifeless on the spear.

DM: Made a luck check for it and Rolfo does indeed have the armor, i'll add your name to the party treasure please note it on your character sheet along with the AC difference.
[1d20] = 10 Luck Check for Rolfo to have Armor on
DM: Hey NJWilliam don't sweat making rolls for combat anymore unless you really want to i'm handling rolls now.

OOC: Combat is over please level yourselves up to level 1. If you have any extra characters beyond 1 pick one to be your main. The others will also need to be leveled but they will become retainers under your control. This means the morale checks listed on pg 310 of the book will apply to them along with the daily wages and share of gear. I will make any applicable morale checks as needed. Please also post character actions i'm not going to delay us for leveling purposes we have a new player awaiting.

My apologies if this combat seemed slow I don't know that I have a better solution other than encouraging everyone to post quickly which keeps combat moving. I think a large part of that was everyone except for a few were afraid to engage Heltel so it pulled others out of the encounter. Feel free to take other non combat actions even while combat is going on I can certainly adjudicate more than one thing going at at a time.

Bronn drags his brother Aengus's body out of the water, and collapses to the beach, holding Aengus's corpse.

Crow pats Darvin on the back and says, "I'm sorry you had to do that," and then crouches down near Bronn.

Darvin collapses to his knees in bewilderment at the events that led to him killing one of his companions, he gasps to Crow, "He would have killed more of us, right? Tell me he would have . . ."

Bronn takes his brother's shovel and with his short sword chops off the head and whittles the remaining haft into a crude holy symbol of Klazath. He takes the rings off his brother's fingers, slides one over the whittled down end of his holy symbol until it fits tightly, and puts the other on a finger of his right hand. He takes his brother's mace, stands up, and stabs his spear into the sandy beach. Short sword in hand, he walks to Heltel's corpse, cuts a swath off of Heltel's shirt, and ties it around his holy symbol.

Standing back up, Bronn cuts his forearm with his short sword, wipes the blood across the front of his hauberk, and says, "Chaos was the cause of this, and it will feel our vengeance. Someone who can use it take Aengus's hauberk and that spear."
ooc: Have to take Bronn as level 1 cleric after that encounter!
Sebastian, A Candle in the Darkness
Ulrich, Tales of The Troll Company
Alex Fiord, The Rescuers
Hakon Geirmundarson, Pawns of the North Wind

The enormous thick tentacled monster begins to move a bit closer to the beach and reaches one of it's incredibly long tentacles out towards the beach head. It wraps up the corpse of Heltel and drags him under the sea and then disappears under the water.

DM: If anyone has any reaction to want to stop the tentacle beast let me know otherwise i'll leave it as is. This means Heltel's gear will be gone as well though.

OOC: Awesome I think he will be an awesome cleric, I love seeing RP lead up to decisions like that ;).

Also It ended up not mattering but remember Bronn will be receiving a -4 to rolls until he completes his task for Klazath.

If it's possible that Heltel dropped his mace or any other objects, Rolfo will look to retrieve them. Then he slumps down on the beach, mopping his brow. "Rest in peace, shaman. You've gone to where ol' Burt has gotten to, I don't doubt. Mebbe that thing has had his supper and will bother us no longer... Martha, Martha..."

Wow, that was whacked out! Gotta love DCC! 8-)

I'll try to level up tomorrow, but may be Saturday before I can get to it...

Heltel's mace drops to the ground but everything else goes with him down into the depths. Rolfo grabs it up once the beach is clear of the giant tentacled beast.

You all now rest on the beach along with the ready to sail Dragon prowed ship. Very faint drumming sounds can occasionally be heard off in the distance, in the direction of the ziggurat.

DM: Okay I am going to give everyone until Saturday night to level up and to declare actions. If I don't hear any other ideas I am going to assume everyone wishes to sail the ship over to the Ziggurat.

I also may do a small introduction/explanation for everyone's level up into their class to give it a bit more flavor but i'll need everyone leveled and finished to do that.

Uriel, after making it out alive from yet another dangerous situation strongly believes that his welfare was secured on account of his deity. Standing up he makes his way toward the shore. Kneeling he begins to pray and ask Choranus for forgiveness and guidance.

Fruldrick, Halfling Haberdasher

Numbed by the violence and death, and spurned to attempt to survive by watching others remove items from the dead, Fruldrick looks to the bodies for anything of use in getting out of this perpetual night alive. When at the corpse of Aengus, the halfling relieves the body of the small sack, ration, chalk, flask and candle. He then places his hand-mirror into the bag and slings the container over his shoulder. He holds the sack with his right hand and pats his scissors with his left, "My condolences to those of you that lost friends". Fruldrick looks at the bodies that litter the area, and then to the living, "I think it would be proper if we said a few words before continuing. You know, for those that died. Such a sad state to be driven mad with grief from the fear of never escaping this place". He says the last while looking at Heltel.

While Rolfo slowly collects his thoughts he also piles up a couple dozen smooth, round stones. When prompted, he considers seriously what to say about Heltel. "Well, Martha, I never heard the man swear, by earth nor heaven nor hell..." Then the dwarf gathers his stones into his pack, salutes the sea where several of his former companions have been lost, and boards the mysterious ship.

Leaving the sailing to those who surely know better, he looks about for a good length of spare rope, anything that might serve as a grapple, and a stout board or barrel lid to which he might affix a couple bits of rope for braces on a makeshift shield. If there's still time, he'll try to fashion a crude sling from the split ends of the rope and a patch of cloth cut from his own coarse-woven undertunic. "If we're gonna survive this, Martha, we're gonna hafta do it proper..."

As the ship nears the farther shore, he'll pitch in however he can. "This rope? And what do I do with it? Pull, you say?"

A comforting warmth surrounds Uriel and a light glow begins to build up around him. He notices all around him life begins to sprout up very quickly and then slowly fades. The voice of a young boy can be heard in Uriel's ear's alone.
"My child forgiveness is not what you need for you have done great deeds and grown into one of my finest creations. My power wanes in this place, a evil destructive power resides close and must be ended! Uriel I grant you a medallion with my symbol and a small piece of my power. End this evil so that creation may take hold yet again." In Uriel's hand appears a medallion with a symbol of a white tree on a green background, the symbol of Choranus.

Rolfo finds a spare rope amongst the spare supplies of the boat along with a few spare boards. He fashions the makeshift shield. He also makes what he feels appears to be a workable sling.

DM: I debated back and forth on how to handle making a sling and shield and I think i've just decided to give it to you because it's cool and sounds more fun that you could hand craft a few things.

OOC: I got delayed a bit but tonight i'll push us on to the Ziggurat.

Yeah, wasn't sure if maybe you'd give them some kind of drawback (a shield that would break under certain circumstances or a -1 sling maybe). Just let me know. I'm cool with that!

Uriel, weeps. Not of sadness but of joy." Yes, Choranus, I will do whatever I can to end the evil that pollutes this place. Your will is my desire." Standing up, he kisses the medallion and wraps it in cloth before securing it deep within his pocket. Walking towards his companions he scans them for injuries that might need healing and says," Choranus be praised!"

OOC: That and it allows you to really experience a dwarf in their full glory. If it comes up in some situation I may use it's shoddy shape for flavor but otherwise i'm not too worried about it.

It took several minutes for Eldarial to snap out of the horror-induced trance she found herself in. Lake monsters eating her friends, her companions seemingly possessed and killing each other. It was almost too much for her to stand. After the death of her brother, she has been on the edge...and watching these events unfold nearly pushed her over that edge.
But eventually, slowly, she comes to herself, allows a few tears for the fallen, and says in a shaky voice, "My f-friends...I am s-sorry for not helping. I just...I just didn't know what to do. And with my b-brother not long gone...well, I'm sorry for your losses. And I vow to help us out of this hellhole if it takes my last dying breath."
Eldarial walks around the beach, offering words of comfort to Bronn, Darvin, and Rolfo, and then she stands amazed at Uriel. She smiles and turns to the halfling, Fruldrick. "I...I don't think we've met...officially. I am Eldarial."
Winter is coming...

Fruldrick, Halfling

Fruldrick bows to the woman and says in a somber tone, "It is a pleasure to meet you lady. I only wish we could have made acquaintance in Cinton and under better circumstances." He looks to Uriel, a light glow appearing around the man and fading, and then back to the Eladrial, "The ways of this place and these men are strange. I fear our trials have only begun."

After the hard emotional battle with the tentacle beast and with Heltel you all gather yourself and feel determined to travel to the golden glowing ziggurat in the distance and find out what is going on here You gather upon the dragon prowed longship and with your combined knowledge you manage to make the thing seaworthy.

"The island draws closer, revealing the source of the golden glow: a towering ziggurat, with burning
light radiating from within the sliver-thin cracks between its massive stone blocks.
"

"A wide ramp circles the edifice, sloping to the top of the temple. Hordes of beastmen crowd the ramp, howling to the darkness, hammering on massive hide drums and pushing a terrified string of prisoners to the ziggurat’s glowing peak. High atop the temple, you can make out a fearsome silhouette of an enormous armored figure, wreathed in infernal smoke lit from below. ." The silhouette is of the one eyed cyclopean creature you saw before.

As you pull up to the shore the beasts all of different sizes and deformities are oblivious to your presence as they shove prisoners up to the top of the ziggurat. Blood curdling human screams can be heard occasionally coming from the top of the ziggurat.

For Grognardsw
Krylina you find yourself at the bottom of this ziggurat being shoved forward by a beast creature with Curling Ram's Horns and Bulbous, Oversized Eyes. It's a struggle against the beast's might to break free.
