Perfect.

As an aside, one of the central themes of this setting is a lack of central authority. You're not going to a land with a bunch of kingdoms and settled domains. This is a land of independent city-states, with large tracts of wilderness between.

Bangerang, saved by cost of living!

I think I will keep the wagon – it's easier than recalculating all my expenses and less useful to steal than a pile of money – and we can just send an outrider on a fast horse to deploy it if necessary. As for Villa, I have a portable workshop specifically because I plan on conquest and expansion into the unknown; any house is as good as another when none of them are home.

And credit where it's due, 'twas Rodriguez who knew how saddle bags worked.

The XP progression is pretty steep already, but at least they don't really need a share of the treasure.

I'd vote for keeping the lab at a home base, and doing the research during downtime. With healing from wounds and hiring and such, we will presumably have some. I wasn't planning on having a big purse to make much of a contribution to a house to start, but I could change that, if necessary.

Having a home base is "free", or at least we already have one due to Cost of Living. So I've got a wagon and four draft horses for when I need them, but won't have to bring them if I don't need them. I'll grab some mapping utensils and call it a day :)

Given the current party makeup, I think I may change to a mage or warlock with an explorer henchman.
Would this upset the apple cart too much?
I know some others may have not taken an explorer since I had one in the works.

Your call. I'm pretty locked in at this point, but remember that either choice – being a character or having one as a henchman – works well enough. We also have both a witch and a warlock as henchfolk on another sheet, so we do have some arcane might along with two free communes per week. Unless you are positive that bringing one in will add something we lack, it may just be bothersome for you to rejigger.

Whatever you think would be fun to play, man. We don't need to fill every niche or anything. Magic would be cool, but the explorer will also rock for our overland adventures. We can just pick our battles to maximize our strengths. If you went venturer, that would push us in a different direction, which I could also see working.

Mage with Explorer henchman it is, then.

Unnamed Mage "volunteered" (was chosen) to search the lands for his college to find a location for a new college sanctum. Many of his college are smarter than he is, but none are as ambitious. He brought with an explorer henchman who is from a military group connected to the college, and who had some personal problems with a ranking officer and needed to get away.

1. 4d4 roll for hit points, please.

2. He would also like a familiar.

3. I'd like to trade his clairaudience potion for two formula. If he can choose the formulas, healing and oil of slipperiness.

4. His repertoire is 3, 2, 2. If he can choose spells available for his repertoire, he'd like the following:
1st: detect magic, sleep, magic missile, (read languages)
2nd: invisibility, knock, web, (locate object)
3rd: fireball, fly, (skinchange)

5. Is there a limit, other than cost, to how many items he can create and research before starting?

Thanks.

p.s. Sorry if this is a double post, I don't see that it posted the first time.

No worries. Level of henchman? Mage is 5th level: result of 4d4 hp is 12.

Okay with change to formulae.

Since item creation is a function of 5th level, which you have just reached, I am going to say you have had three weeks of access to a workshop prior to leaving.

I rolled on a chart in Dragon magazine, April 1984 on page 11. Roll of 23 results in "Lizard, small", no attacks 1-2 feet in length, wide angled vision. For 500 gold I will reroll if you're not happy.

That's a nice familiar chart.
I'll spend 500 for another try on it.

Shit, I left it at work. I'm going in for a bit tomorrow morning, and will reroll then. Or, if you've got it I'll just roll and let you read the answer. Rolled a 4 on my phone.

I'd also like to spend 750 g.p. for 3 weeks work on potions he has formula for.

- He will try to make 4 potions of healing and 2 oil of slipperiness.

- As 1st level with formula, I believe each costs 250 g.p. and is successful on an 11.5 (not sure if that rounds up to 12).

He will also spend 1,000 g.p. for the 15% chance at two random magic items.

Gold spent: 10,000 magic items + 1,000 magic items + 750 potions + 500 familiar + 1,400 gear (estimated) = 13,650

2,350 g.p. remaining.

Hmmm. NJW, I'm afraid that you are not going to be able to make the potions of healing.

From page 117.
An arcane spellcaster may never create magic items that are exclusive to divine spellcasters.
Now, there is a passage in the next paragraph that states a wizard can make an item if they don't know the spell, as long as they have the formula (or write a spell). However, I think the quoted text supersedes that.

Let me know what you want to do.
