Ral leaps but falls short, his halfling legs able to take him only so far. The rope saves him from falling down the pit. With a body-jarring thud he slams against the side wall of the pit after 10', battered but not bodily hurt. He climbs and tries again.
You can try again until you get an 8, at which point you do a Dex. check to grab the latch. You can make multiple rolls until you get it, followed by Dex. check, etc. It's a matter of time (as time is being kept for scoring.)

"If only I'd been born an elf," Ral mutters. He shakes his head, pulls himself up, and tries again...
"Ha, ha!" Ral cries as he latches on. "Victory!" He drags himself up and tries to push the door open.

As Ral looks through the now-open door, he sees a short 10' span of corridor that ends in a glassless window, a large opening (3' wide, 4' high, with a 4" wide sill) that faces another glassless window across an indeterminate drop (from Ral's current position.) The thief thinks he hears the lapping of water from the drop beyond the window.
Liking maps, I decided to quickly draw up the Run so far. Ignore the top left circle part. The dotted line in the second room represents the tunnel under the room, that you went in from the shaft ladder down.

Ral makes sure he has a firm grip on the door handle, then draws his dagger and cuts the rope holding him to the other side of the pit. He makes sure to cut as far as his arm will reach, to leave him with at least some length of rope in case it comes in handy later.

Ral sheathes the dagger and pockets whatever rope he's retrieved, then checks the floor before him for traps.
Finding nothing, he proceeds across the space and peers through the glassless window, trying to gauge the space below and before him.

Ral sees a window in the north wall. On the window sill is a note under a short bow and three arrows.

The window looks out on a sloping 15' roof top and a chasm (which from this angle he can't see down) and across the 10' chasm a gallery area 20' lower than Morik's location. This open area is 20'x20' and there are three dummies, two of which are next to each other but six feet apart, and the third is between the two but set back six feet. The front two are women, the rear is a roguish fellow.

The note reads: "Shoot the assassin. You have three shots."

Ral looks down at the three dummies, scrutinizing them carefully to see if there are any identifying marks that might be there to trip him up (for example, if one of the women dummies has a weapon while the roguish dummy does not).

Ral looks at the women. One is dressed in peasant clothes, a smile on her face. The other is in a voluminous noble robe, smiling as well. Neither has a weapon.

Ral takes aim at the rogue. Then suddenly from behind one of the women steps a little man - a halfling - with a short bow aimed at you!

The two of you let loose your arrows. The antagonist halfling's padded arrow thuds into Ral (5 HP), making the thief's own shot fly wildly off mark.

Ral winces and grabs another arrow. He draws down on the enemy halfling and fires.

Ral fires one of his three arrows at the halfling and hits! He winces, moves behind the noble manikin, nocks an arrow, and fires again.

"Stay out of my way!" Ral shouts at the other halfling, then takes another shot at the roguish dummy.

Ral is quicker on the draw. He fires and hits the rogue dummy. The enemy halfling curses and leaves by a secret door in the rear.

The corridor turns south then west for 40' then south.

Initiative: The Runner [1d6] = 4 vs. Enemy [1d6] = 3
