Muttering a quick prayer to Moradin for the safety of his companions, Ulrich looks about the cave, watching for any sign of danger.

IWC: Caelvanna, Lauranna & Ulrich at rock ledge...

#123 Post by Argennian »

~ A few minutes pass as Caelvanna and Ulrich wait at and atop of the rocky ledge inside the watery cave. There is no further signs of underwater illumination to be seen within or beyond the crab den and if there is any activity taking place below and beyond, it cannot be disseminated by those above the surface at present.

So other than the continued sounds of dripping water and the shallow surf lapping gently up against the walls and ledge within the insipid locale, all is quiet and returned to it's natural state again. Demi-human eyes adapt to the low, shadowy light here while listening ears adjust to the subterranean sounds being played unassumingly. Assessing dwarf and elf noses can barely discern something in the air other than the scent of salt water, coastal sea air and freshly-killed and cracked giant crab up at the entrance. It's sharper and perhaps more pungent but so far hard to place the hand of memory or recognition on.

The lapping sounds of the surf seem to lull Caelvanna into a more relaxed state, but the wild elf fights her instinct to relax and attempts to remain on heightened alert.

IWC: Encounter #9 Giant rat attack!

#126 Post by Argennian »

~ Caelvanna and Ulrich continue to hold station at their previous positions within the watery cave. The Wild elf's sharp eyes continue to scan the entire cave skeptically as she holds her already-seasoned fighter fingers on her bowstring trigger. The stoic dwarf cleric next to her continues to peer down into the crab den for any signs of magical light, or anything else for that matter. The two wordlessly communicate between them with nods and smirks, not needing to announce the obvious or admit to any particular feelings of impatience or whatnot.

Although the tranquil, calming sounds of the water try their best to lull the two island scouts into a more relaxed and less alert state, they remain mindful of potentialities and dangers. In fact alert enough to determine that they are no longer alone in the watery cave...

Ulrich is the first to sense another presence, and the first to hear the squeaking. He's absolutely certain of it. His dwarf nose and underground awareness seem to be divinely inspired at present. Caelvanna is the first to notice the slight infravision signatures and reflecting glare of a few sets of beady little eyes just peeking around and then ducking back around the corner about 50 feet deeper in the back of the cave. Rats. Giant rats. Suddenly that smell that could not be discerned is recognized for what it is.

They are flighty and fleeting vermin alright, ducking out just slightly to take quick assessing peeks at the two island invaders ahead of them and then ducking back, not giving Caelvanna much of a target at all. Not wanting to waste an arrow, she waits patiently in her weapons-ready crouch, almost thankful that something might actually be presenting itself for her to impale with more of her flight arrows. Ulrich harrumphs cynically and readies his mace as he watches the rats play their game.

A few moments of the assessing nature transpire when suddenly Lauranna bursts out of the dark water through the crab den entrance at the base of the rocky ledge, shattering the quiet, tense stillness of the moment! Thankfully, neither Caelvanna or Ulrich are surprised or lulled out of focused readiness. Which is a good thing, as the apparently half-dozen or more giant rats suddenly charge out from around the corner and head their way. They appear emboldened by the arrival of the High elf and seem to be taking that as an invitation for a quick island invader snack before what they smell to be a grand giant crab breakfast!

Actions?

******************************************

*** Since Caelvanna is weapons-ready with her bow, she will be able to fire her 3 arrows as the giant rats round the corner, so go ahead and make her attack rolls, Dave. Distance: 50 feet/short range. (This will be considered her action in the surprise round, so she'll get off her shots and then be able to go again in Round 1 ***

POP1 for SocraticLawyer: Ulrich can have already pulled himself up onto the ledge or remained in the water by the crab den entrance, your call, SL. Just as a point of order here: If he wants to defend his companion and make any attacks, however (granted any of those giant rats can make it past the Wild elf Gatling gun :D ), he'd pretty much have to be up on the rocky ledge to do so.

*** Need a d6 party initiative roll and Declared Actions for Round 1! ***

POP2: Any attack rolls made for Ulrich will be assumed as being applied when the giant rats come into melee range, which will be end of Round 1/ on rolled initiative on Round 2, if they make it that far. (Note: regardless of initiative rolled for Rd 1, Ulrich is considered as holding his readied action from the surprise round and will likely be able to strike first if they reach melee range and engage, as he'll have weapon reach.)

OOC: ok then! :P

Lauranna is now back with the duo in the watery cave, although she just arrived and has no idea WTF is going on presently. Ulrich can easily announce that to her so she knows but as soon as she stands up and looks, or more likely hears the twang-twang-twang, it'll be pretty obvious!

POP3: Very nice spot check for Caelvanna and omnipotent listen check for Ulrich there! (I had the spot check as a base 5 or lower). We'll consider that d6 surprise roll as used up as well, even though it was by one of your own! :)

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need any further clarifications!

As the giant rats errupt from around the corner, Caelvanna, with her same practiced motion, looks to greet the vermin with a volley of deadly arrows. Convinced she missed her mark with at least two of her shots, she curses quietly, hoping she has another opportunity to redeem herself before needing to switch to her sword.

Surprise
Short Bow (S: 0-50') [1d20+4] = 4+4 = 8 [1d6+2] = 6+2 = 8
Short Bow (S: 0-50') [1d20+4] = 11+4 = 15 [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3
Short Bow (S: 0-50') [1d20+4] = 5+4 = 9 [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4

Lauranna climbs up to the ledge and quickly snatches her pouch, searching for a little pinch of sand. She tries to quickly turn and cast sleep.

OOC: not sure if it will get off this round....but she is gonna try.

OOC: Ulrich will be on the ledge by this point.

"Rats!" says Ulrich to Lauranna , who already seems to be preparing her spell.

Ulrich swings his mace at the first rat who gets close enough that is, if any get past Caelvanna's arrows and/or the Sleep spell.

To hit with mace [1d20] = 9

"Slippery vermin," he curses, whiffing with his mace.

OOc for Caelvanna, Lauranna & Ulrich

OOC: Lauranna had just arrived to stand up in the water at the rock ledge when the rats moved to attack. We'll say that since Ulrich called out her, she'd be able to know what's going down and at that point could decide her next course of action.

So I'd rule that she could then move to her spell component pouch there on the ledge, get out her material component (sand, cricket, rose petal, whatever) and be ready to cast her sleep spell on the party's rolled initiative in Round 1.

Note: Party rolled a 1, so her sleep spell can begin being cast on segment 6 (of 10). Since it has a 1 segment casting time, the spell goes off on segment 7 (of 10) of Round 1. So it's likely that the rats (with movement: 120 feet/rd.) will be on your position by the time she can complete casting.

Nuke: that being said, I'm assuming Lauranna will be placing the spell so that her companions on the ledge are just outside it's 15 foot radius AOE? If that's the case, I'll take that to mean any of them from the second rack back, i.e. not currently engaged with Ulrich and Caelvanna. Please let me know if that's not the case.

Dave, since those rats are moving at 120 feet/round, and based on what I just rolled for their initiative, Caelvanna will not be able to get off any more arrows before they close to melee range. Now she'll have realized that seeing the speed of their approach as she was firing away, so she'd know that it was going hand to hand in the next round and she'd need her sword from that point.

So that being said, go ahead and make a short sword attack for Caelvanna for Round 1 then!

OOC: Agreed, She will give it a shot, don't need more than a couple in melee range. How narrow is the ledge? How many can squeeze side-by-side? And do we have a body count yet?

With the rats advancing more quickly than anticipated, Caelvanna quickly, but carefully, casts aside her bow and draws her short sword. Thinking, from her current position on the ledge, she can limit the number of rats that are able to reach her at a given time, she lets the vermin bring the attack to her.

As the first rodent enters her space, she slashes out with her short sword and looks to stick the creature with her blade.

Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 15+1 = 16 [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14 [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6

IWC: Encounter #9 Giant rat attack thru end of Rd 1

#133 Post by Argennian »

~ The giant rats launch their verminous attack on Caelvanna and Ulrich, just as Lauranna bursts through the surface of the water at the crab hole entrance, thankfully to no one's surprise!

Up on the ledge, the specialized Wild elf archer fires her readied shot as the small horde of at least a dozen giant rats break around the corner in a surge of hunger and scamper rapidly towards them. She shoots two more arrows right after in quick succession but only one of the three fly true. The shot is enough to drops it's rodent recipient. Now it's the quickly approaching dirty dozen vermin minus one.

Standing steadfast next to Caelvanna on the ledge, with mace and shield to hand and at the ready, is the party's dwarf cleric. The recently leveled priest of Moradin looks back to see that it's Lauranna that's emerged from the crab den below. He offers her a quick, no nonsense and simple situational status in one word as she takes her first deep breath and begins standing up. "Rats!"

The High elf magic-user/thief receives Ulrich's message and once on her feet, looks past her fellow island explorers to understand the word of warning. The reflecting glare of a dozen giant vermin eyes and sets of teeth is fast approaching them as Caelvanna is firing arrows and Ulrich is preparing to make a mighty swing of his mace. Thinking of her sleep spell, Lauranna moves over to where her gear is at on the ledge and begins fumbling through her spell component pouch to retrieve what's needed to make it so.

*********************************

Initiative: Round 1
Party: 1
Giant Rats: 6

~ The wave of giant rats quickly cover the short, 50 foot distance and crashes upon the readied and waiting dwarf and Wild elf as the High elf scrambles to ready her material and somatic components for her intended spell...

Holding his action from the previous round, Ulrich swings his mace but underestimates the slippery vermin and misses the mark. Four of the giant rats attack the metal-armored dwarf cleric but are unable to find their hungry way past his shield and chain hauberk. Four other rodent members of the giant rat attack force move on Caelvanna. Two of them are able to get by her dextrous, leather-armored defenses and land bites, one to her left arm (1dam) and one on her right leg (2dam). Behind the eight giant rats currently engaged, three more look for an opening and jockey to get in the fray where they can.

Just behind the protective, obstructing wall of her two steadfast companions, Lauranna retrieves her material components, starts the somatic motions needed for her spell and begins speaking the magical incantation needed to cast her sleep spell. In the interim, Caelvanna has already gently tossed her short bow to safety at the side and drawn her short blade in one fluid motion. She swings it in a deadly arc of elven steel, slicing apart another giant rodent and succeeding in reducing the rat horde's numbers by another two just as Lauranna finishes casting her spell. The three giant rats assessing the action just beyond melee range and preparing to strike are hit by the sleep spell and fall into a deep magical slumber.

Two quick questions:
(1) Just to confirm, the three sleeping rats are the ones not engaged with Ulrich or Caelvanna. Ulrich is still facing four rats and Caelvanna three, right?
(2) Does Caelvanna need to make a save or two for the bites she took?

Argennian wrote:WIH (primary/secondary): Caelvanna – short sword (arrows fired: 3/quiver: 21 left)
Also, I have Caelvanna with only 18 arrows remaining; she shot 3 here, and 3 more here. She does also carry 20 silver flight arrows in addition to her normal ones, though. ;)

---

Caelvanna keeps her focus on the three rats still surrounding her, looking to drive her short sword into another and reduce their numbers yet again. In her frustration, her instinct is to kick the creatures over the cliff, but fights the urge out of fear of losing her footing and falling into the drink herself.

Initiative [1d6] = 2

Lauranna is somewhat dissatisfied with the number of rats she collected, she is happy to see her mates makes quick work of them. Deciding her best course of action pluck away at the remaining ones. Stepping up to the back of the others, she picks an opening between the pair and flicks a couple daggers.

[1d20+3] = 10+3 = 13 to hit [1d4] = 2 damage

To hit with mace [1d20] = 14

Assuming that's a hit:

Damage with mace [1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4

OOC clarifications for Caelvanna

#137 Post by Argennian »

dmw71 wrote:Two quick questions:

OOC: Correct. (Sorry if I was unclear there, Dave! )
dmw71 wrote:(2) Does Caelvanna need to make a save or two for the bites she took?
Well, since the character does not necessarily know right atm when bit if they contracted anything, I usually like to roll that right after encounter. If the character becomes diseased, I then figure out when they'll start to notice negative effects!

(Note: this is pretty much always something that will be known well before any kind of mechanical penalty could come into play, such as one affecting to hit rolls, character's movement rate, constitution, saving throws, etc.)

dmw71 wrote:Also, I have Caelvanna with only 18 arrows remaining; she shot 3 here, and 3 more here. She does also carry 20 silver flight arrows in addition to her normal ones, though. ;)
OOC: Point of order so noted, Dave! And thank you for your honesty there. 8-)

I did have it noted correctly in my game binder (hard copy), as I run all encounters/combats/specials with paper & pencil to track stuff. Saves so much time versus having to open another tab and search for it. But always a chance I can miss that stuff like I did this time, especially when I get really busy and am hurrying posts to keep up. Always a boon to a DM when they have players that take the time to track that stuff and keep it all current, and then let me know if when I pooch it! :geek:

I edited the action post to reflect my mistake/omission. Also confirmed that she has those 20 silver arrows in her current inventory!
;)

Encounter with the Giant Rats: Round 2 (TOD: 0809hrs)

Initiative
Party: 2
Giant Rats: 3

~ The giant vermin continue to press their hungry scavenger agenda upon the island explorer trio in the watery cave...

Of the 4 giant rats trying to swarm over and eat Ulrich, only one is able to find an opening in the chain and shield armored dwarf's defenses and deliver a hardy bite (3dam). The 2 giant rats trying to do the same to Calevanna have the same luck, as just one is able to get past her swinging arc of elven steel and then leather armor to deliver another minor wound to the Wild elf (2dam). Their other 3 cousins just behind them lie in magical slumber, likely dreaming of the proposed giant crab fest that originally motivated them to action.

It's the party's turn to respond and they do so. Caelvanna swings her short sword in retaliation but the slippery vermin prove more elusive this time around. Standing next to her, Ulrich swings his dwarf-forged mace and is able to brain the giant rat that just bit him (4dam). Having just cast her sleep spell and still enjoying the benefit of being invisible to animals, Lauranna draws two daggers and steps up in the water between yet just behind her companions. The High elf shows off her marksmanship, and her luck, by throwing her daggers at the rats that are currently engaged with her fellow island explorers. One dagger pierces and kills one of the giant rats fighting Caelvanna (2dam) while the other impales one of them head to tail facing off against Ulrich (4dam), slaying it in incredible style!

- Ulrich: taken 3 points damage (from 1 giant rat bite)

OOC: Just wanted to make sure to note that Lauranna was successful in not hitting either of her companions by throwing her daggers into melee. Her second shot shot was for x2 rolled damage on that crit (nat 20) for 8 damage!

"Pesky little shits," Caelvanna snarls as she feels another one of the creatures catch her about her ankle. Or, maybe it was the same one and not "another" one? They all look alike, she decides, and they all must die.

"Take that!" she says as she sinks the tip her blade into the furry hide of the rat she's fairly confident is the one that bit her.

Initiative [1d6] = 4
Short Sword (vs. s/m) [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20 [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
