The undead are horrid foes and the mightier Ghasts rake Jing Ji-ho and Bofur with their poisoned claws drawing hot blood that sends them into a true frenzy. It becomes apparent to all the men that these monsters will never break and flee. Only steel, flame and faith will save them here.

Darfilla provides the flame and lashes out with a tongue of arcane fire that scorches the Ghast nearly defeated by her employer as well as several further out. The nearest one succumbs to its injuries but the others continue onward.

One of the singed creatures is fully under Morwen's spell and has lost any semblance of self-preservation. Such is the power of the Ravenkin's black arts. A mortal might throw off an enchantment that turned them against friends or if harmed by the caster's ally. But the undead have no morals and so they have no defense against any action they are compelled to take.

But there are yet more undead closing fast!

Both PCs save and no longer need to worry about the smell.
Both were hit by the Ghasts though and must save vs paralysis.

Ghast vs JJh [_4d6]=(2+1+5+6)=14 2 hits.
Ghast vs Bofur [_4d6]=(3+1+4+6)=14 1 hit.

Ghoul vs Morphin [_2d6]=(1+5)=6 Miss
Ghoul vs Verdugo [_2d6]=(3+2)=5 Miss
Ghoul vs Dwalin [_2d6]=(3+4)=7 Miss

I believe there is some confusion about how to handle the attack rolls still so I have redone them here. I am rewriting the combat section in the rules using feedback on this. The table stays though!
Dwalin vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(3+6+1)=10 1 hit
Bofur vs Ghast [_5d6]=(2+5+5+1+4)=17 2 hits

Macnav vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(3+4+2)=9 Miss

Melee wrap up
Ghast 1 has 1hp
Ghast 2 has 2hp
Ghouls 1 and 2 are slain
Ghoul 3 has 1hp

Darfilla casts Burning Hands hitting the Ghast JJh is battling as well as the Commanded one and the one it has rounded on and Darfilla BH targets [1d3]=1 Only 1 ghoul.
The spell is a 40'long cone 20'wide at the end. Very nasty inside a dungeon, still good in the open when close.
Darfilla BH Damage [_1d6]=(6)=6. It doesn't matter what the enemy rolls to save, they all take 1 hit.
Damaging spell saves roll their damage and the save determines what the to hit number is. The best you can hope for is a to hit of 6 and she got a 6.
Ghast 1 is slain.
Ghast 3 has 3hp
Ghast 4 has 3hp.
Ghoul 10 has 1 hp

JJh's Ghast is slain.

Round 2
2 More Ghasts and 8 more Ghouls join the melee.
Archers may loose a volley (including heavy crossbows)
JJh takes one of the Ghasts. He may choose to face both or he can force the second to fight either himself and Bofur, or himself, Morphin and Verdugo.
Everyone else in the melee line will get fresh ghouls.

JJh begins to move slowly and loses 1HD when he attacks. (so he has 4 now).

I think I messed up some of the timing. of this battle.

The phases of a round are:
Ranged
Melee & Movement
Magic

You got a free round at the beginning as the ghouls moved in where Morwen used a spell. So there should have been another volley by the skirmishers (and there was space for meleers to use bows then switch).

So please make a volley of the skirmishers and selfbows and I will apply it to the second line.
Morwen and Cuivne may cast spells as well.

Jing Ji-ho

Extra volley per message #163
Sk: 0 hits
Sk vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(2+5+1)=8[_3d6]=(4+1+3)=8

HxB: 1 hit (Not sure if they can, discard if not)
Hxb vs Ghoul [_2d6]=(6+1)=7[_2d6]=(5+1)=6

JJh: 0 hits
Ji-Ho Missile Attacks [_4d6]=(5+1+2+1)=9, Missile Damage [_4d6]=(1+3+3+1)=8

Back to our regular timing

Missiles before Melee
Taking courage from the battle line defending them, the hunters and crossbowmen focused on their craft to deadly effect.

Sk vs ghouls: 1 hit
Sk vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(3+3+5)=11[_3d6]=(6+4+1)=11

HxB vs Ghouls: 2 hits (The 3rd die roll is an error, there are only 2 HxB present)
Hxb vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(5+3+4)=12[_3d6]=(6+6+4)=16

The battle line did not break, but the foul stench of ghoul breath divided the attention of men and women who have only drilled against mortal foes. They employed their spears and shields well, but not well enough to sever the bonds of undeath holding their enemies together.

Melee
HI vs ghouls: 0 hits
HI vs ghouls [_3d6]=(2+2+3)=7

LI vs ghouls: 0 hits
LI vs ghouls [_3d6]=(3+5+2)=10

Jing Ji-ho felt the poison course through his body and weaken him. He worried about the others, will they stand if he falls? He is not dead yet, even if the poison will kill him. While he stands, others will take heart.
JJh vs ghast: 1 hit (-1 HD for paralysis)
Ji-ho Melee attacks: [1d6+1]=3+1=4 [1d6+1]=6+1=7 [1d6+1]=1+1=2 [1d6+1]=1+1=2

"Fight men, fight!" Morphin called out to the battle line as he gave them a shining example of how to employ a spear with enthusiasm. Verdugo grinned, knowing that the undead can be returned to a fully dead state, his blade danced as ghoul parts fell to the ground.

Morphin vs ghouls: 2 hits
2nd level fighter melee [_3d6]=(6+5+1)=12

Verdugo vs ghouls: 3 hits
2nd level fighter melee [_3d6]=(6+6+6)=18

Morwen

Trusting Macnav to do his part in helping to hold the line by continue to fight the ghouls, Morwen began to summon an Undead Hero to fight on her behalf, sending the Hero at the third Ghast. Cuivne took the opportunity to summon skeletal berserkers to help bolster their ranks, sending her berserkers to assist those in melee. Meanwhile, the Ghast that was affected by Morwen's previous casting continued to cause trouble among the ranks of their combatants.

Macnav Melee [_3d6]=(3+1+6)=10 1 hit
Cuivne Skeletal Berserkers [_4d6]=(2+6+5+1)=14 2 hits
Skeletal Hero [_5d6]=(5+2+1+3+4)=15 1 hit

The fighting continues and the undead get the worst of it. Foul ichor stains the wet grass as the ghouls are hacked down but one of the men is taken down as well. His gasps for breath and tries to scream as the ghoul's venom races through his veins.

Bofur saves. He has no effects currently.

Bofur Melee v Ghast [_5d6]=(4+3+6+6+6)=25 His Ghast is defeated.
Dwalin Melee [_3d6]=(4+1+3)=8 Nadda.

Ghast v Ghast (controlled) [_4d6]=(1+1+3+5)=10 1 hit
Ghast v Ghast (enemy) [_4d6]=(5+6+6+5)=22 woof, 4 hits
Ghast v Skeleton Hero [_4d6]=(4+3+3+3)=13 Nadda

7 hits vs ghouls. With one previously injured that is 5 dispatched.
JJh faces a Ghast with 3hp left
Morwen's summon likewise faces one with 3hp
Bofur will face the remaining Ghast with also 3hp.

Morwen's controlled Ghast is slain.
Ghoul save vs command [2d6]=5 The ghoul succumbs to the spell and turns on the others.
Ghoul vs Ghouls [_2d6]=(2+3)=5 No hits.

Ghoul vs Macnav [_2d6]=(2+1)=3 No hits
Ghoul vs Dwalin [_2d6]=(5+1)=6 No hits
Ghoul vs Morphin [_2d6]=(3+1)=4 No hits
Ghoul vs Verdugo [_2d6]=(4+5)=9 No hits
Ghouls vs Summoned Undead [_4d6]=(4+1+5+1)=11 1 berserker is slain
Ghouls vs Heavy Infantry [_3d6]=(1+6+3)=10 1 infantryman is taken down
Ghouls vs Light Infantry [_1d6]=(3)=3 No hit.

HI results
HI Wounded [2d6]=7 Wounded, unstable
HI Save vs Para [2d6]=8 Partial save

3 Ghasts remain and melee a Hero each
2 Ghouls remain fighting the PCs
1 commanded ghoul fights the last enemy ghoul.
4 ghouls were turned for 2 rounds so they are 2 rounds away. Balin drops concentration to fight and allows them to turn around and come back where they will be easily handled in 2 rounds. Or shot before they arrive.

1 skeletal berserker is lost (3 remain)
1 HI is wounded by ghouls and his breathing is in trouble from paralysis

ROUND 3
JJh, Bofur and Morwen's Summon must fight their Ghast.
Macnav and Cuivne's skeletons have 6HD and engage the remaining Ghouls.
Everyone else is free to choose targets. If they haven;t saved vs Ghast Scent they must do so to help. Ghouls can be freely attacked.

I'm not sure what I did to upset the dice roller...

Jing Ji-ho

The sheild wall avenges their fallen comrade as Darfilla drags him out of the fight in an attempt to render aide just like her friend Hemia would do. Ji-ho's focus is still broken from the ghast poison coursing through his veins as both Morphin and Verdugo surround the ghast on their captain.

The missile troops select targets not in melee and try to even the odds.

JJh: 1 hit
Ji-ho Melee attacks: [1d6+1]=5+1=6 [1d6+1]=1+1=2 [1d6+1]=1+1=2 [1d6+1]=2+1=3

Morphin (attack ghast on JJh): 1 hit
Save vs Ghast smell: Pass
Pair dice roll [_2d6]=(5+6)=11
2nd level fighter melee [_3d6]=(3+5+4)=12

Verdugo (attack ghast on JJh): 0 hits:
Save vs ghast smell: Pass
Pair dice roll [_2d6]=(3+6)=9
2nd level fighter melee [_3d6]=(1+3+2)=6

HI vs ghouls: 1 hit
HI vs ghouls [_2d6]=(4+6)=10

SI vs ghouls: 0 hits
Sk vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(4+4+5)=13[_3d6]=(3+3+4)=10

HxB vs ghouls: 0 hits
Hxb vs Ghoul/Ghast [_2d6]=(3+6)=9[_2d6]=(3+3)=6

Darfilla try to minister aide to the fallen HI: 4 (5 if Alchemy helps)

I feel silly... I forgot to roll Ghast attacks vs Our Heroes.
Ghast vs JJh [_4d6]=(2+2+5+1)=10 1hit. JJh must save at -1.
Ghast vs Bofur [_4d6]=(3+2+4+2)=11 No hits
Ghast vs Skeleton Hero [_4d6]=(5+4+6+4)=19 2 hits. Undead are immune to Ghast venom so no saves.

Just let me know when it's time to attack again; maybe JJh can take down the ghast before he croaks off. Morphin and Verdugo passed their saves and have the ghast surrounded.

The fighting continues and it becomes clear the tide of it favors the adventurers, though for the single fallen man things look bleak. Darfilla can do nothing for him. Only magic will save him.

2 Ghasts are all that remain in melee. 1 vs JJh, 1 vs Morwen's skeleton

You are free to gang up on Ghasts or to go for the 4 Ghouls making their way back.

Jing Ji-ho

The missileers shoot to their best as the remaining ghouls close. Valiant soldiers, even if they are ineffective. When the ghouls do close for melee the heavy infantry take revenge for their fallen brother and Darfilla yells "I'll go get Gurav's healer!" She sprints back to the watchtower, screaming the entire way.

Ji-ho fights his own failing body as he refuses to flee while others are at risk. His determination drives his blade true, and Verdugo finishes off the ghast.

Jing Ji-ho attack ghast: 2 hits, fails save.
Ji-ho Melee attacks: [1d6+1]=4+1=5 [1d6+1]=1+1=2 [1d6+1]=5+1=6
JJh save [_2d6-2]=(3+1)=4-2=2

Morphin attack ghast: 0 hits
Morphin attack [_3d6]=(2+1+3)=6

Verduo attack ghast: 1 hit (that should kill it, I think)
Verdugo attack [_3d6]=(3+2+6)=11

HI vs ghouls: 2 hits!
HI vs ghouls [_2d6]=(6+6)=12

LI vs ghouls: I'm not sure a 5 hits, the LI have shield and spear. If a 5 hits, then 2 hits
LI vs ghouls [_3d6]=(1+5+5)=11

Missles on the returning ghouls, if they are out of melee range:

HxB: 0 hits
Hxb vs Ghoul [_2d6]=(2+4)=6[_2d6]=(5+1)=6

Sk: 0 hits (I don't think a 5 causes a hit for them)
Sk vs Ghoul [_3d6]=(3+4+6)=13[_3d6]=(3+5+2)=10

Morwen

Still standing despite everything, the Skeletal Hero Morwen summoned rears back and attacks the Ghast.

Skeletal Hero [_5d6]=(2+3+6+5+4)=20 - 2 hits
Cuivnes Skeletons v Ghouls [_3d6]=(1+3+4)=8 None
Macnav Ranged v Ghouls [_3d6]=(6+4+4)=14, [_3d6]=(4+2+3)=9 No effect.

With a last furious snarl the ghast leaps to shred Jing Ji-ho who finds he no longer has the strength to resist and words fail to form on his lips as he prays what he assumes is for the last time. At least the pain of his wounds has cooled with the lose of motion as the ghast's horrid toxins pump through his veins. So it is a few moments before he comprehends that his fall wasn;t from injury but because Morphin has thrust him aside with his shield and borne the brunt of that last assault himself.

The day is won, but two men are down, gripped by the unholy power of the undead, and Morphin begins to turn pale as well.

Ghast vs Morphin [_4d6]=(2+5+1+4)=12 1 hit
Morphin Ghast Save [_2d6]=(2+5)=7. -1HD.

The other attacks go toward undead and don't really matter.
