The biggest win is communication. If something isn't working for you, as a player or DM, speak up. Many of us have either over-committed, jumped into a game that didn't work with our personal style, or have just been overwhelmed by real life. If you let the players/DM know, you're going to see 100% support.

I agree with your assessment on OD&D, Holmes, and AD&D vs Later Basic. I much prefer the OD&D - Holmes - AD&D feel and rules. For OSR add BlueHolmes and Hyperborea to the mix. I will play nearly anything, but that is my preferred.
