New to PbP, New-ish to the OSR

#1 Post by tanker405th »

I've been playing D&D for around 5 years now, and last year made the jump into the OSR. I really love the old-school style of play. I've been running a campaign with some friends using OSE Advanced Fantasy for about 8 months. I'm really interested in learning and participating in some PbP with the older editions, especially since I missed out on them growing up!

Welcome Tanker and your two-handed pen!!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Welcome to the forum! PbP is a lot different than face to face; the pace is much slower. That makes even simple actions take weeks, and a one night dungeon foray can take months. On the other hand, you have time to think through your response, check your understanding, and make an artful and enjoyable post.

A big hint is to use the "Out of Character" (OOC) thread and the OOC label in posts to gather information that might be lost in translation. PbP has a very different process, and the more information you get, the better you can participate.

Work with the DM's posting rate, as best you can. It can be hectic; Tiglath's 268 Traveller game sometimes has several posts in one day, while most others are two or three DM posts per week. Find the posting rate and get into the flow.

With the DM's permission, splitting up the group is also a lot easier in PbP. Some PCs can go forage, others go to the shops, and the noble's can sit and sip wine, all at the same "time". It opens up opportunities, as long as the DM isn't over-whelmed. Spearmint's game has several groups running at the same time! How he does it, I have no idea, but it's a great place to start.

I am running a sandbox game using Worlds Without Number (free version available) and I'm looking for new players. Check out the recruitment thread and let me know if you're interested.

sulldawga's game is fun. I was in, but real life jumped me with a vengance. The chargen process is fun and flexible, I created a nice-guy necromancer.

Welcome!
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Thanks for all of the kind words, everyone! I've just gotten my character approved for Spearmint's Barrowmaze (we'll see how long he survives  ). I'm not familiar with WWN, but I've seen it mentioned in a lot of blog posts. I'll try to find some time to peruse the free version to see if it's something that piques my interest. Regardless, thank you for the invite sulldawga.

Thank you Leitz for showing me the differences I've noticed in the text posted throughout the various threads. I'm having to refresh the old IRC/BB memory for a lot of the formatting.

And rredmond the two-handed pen is slowly taking shape. I had the domain, so I figured if I started a blog with it I might *actually* do some writing for a change. At least now I can talk about learning pbp and using my very first 1e character!
