Round 2

#43 Post by dmw71 »

Grim lurches forward and grips the hand axe he previously sunk into his dancing partner. He rips the blade free and, just as he is about to bring the blade down, the giant serpent constricts (-6) and the barbarian's axe falls harmlessly to the ground.

Gwillt, seeing the great barbarian get caught up in the snakes coils, quickly retrieves his torch and rushes forward, shoving it into the snake's face.

The snake recoils, releasing its grip on the unconscious barbarian. In an attempt to get its head away from the fire as quickly as possible, it slithers north around the other side of the triangle intersection but has not committed to a turn -- east or west.

Setting the torch back down in the middle of the path, Gwillt once again goes after the snake's midsection, knowing he won't be safe in these tunnels until the threat is gone.

To Hit, Scimitar [1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23

Damage, Scimitar [1d8+3] = 7+3 = 10

Sorry I didn't try that sooner, TC. I was afraid a swing at the snake might hit you, so I was trying to get it to release you (before doing another round of damage, obviously, but that didn't work...).

Hopefully it will either flee or die (Hey, 30 pts of damage with three attacks! Not bad! No idea if it is enough, though...) and then Gwillt can quickly attempt to stabilize Grim. Fingers crossed!

As the snake begins to slither away from the flame which spooked it, Gwillt takes a hack at its midsection which is still clearly exposed. The snake stops moving; a fleeting hiss is heard as the lengthy reptilian form goes limp (+325xp).

Grim remains unconscious.

*WHEW* I'll take that over continuing to flee!

Gwillt quickly rushes to Grim's side and tries to administer aid to him. He realizes a lot of the damage is probably internal, but he stops the bleeding from the bite, at least, washes his wounds and uses some bandages from Grim's backpack to cover them when he's done.

Then he retrieves the torch and quietly listens at the tunnels nearby to make sure nothing is attracted to the sounds of the fight.

You guys killed it (pun intended). That thing had 29 hit points, so you those awesome damage rolls you made were very much needed.

Gwillt spends a few minutes collecting bandages and administering first aid to the barbarian which, he hopes, will normalize his fallen companion and prevent further damage. The ranger, listening at the nearby tunnels, is thankful that he does not detect any noise.

Kingsfoil? Oi, that's a weed!

Gwillt looks at Grim with concern, afraid he is will be too cold in the cool cave. He uses his scimitar to slit the belly of the great serpent open and pushes the barbarian inside.

The advantage it had, aside from a lower THAC0, was that the constriction damage was automatic once it hit -- which it managed to do on its first attack.

The fire was a very good idea because you guys were in serious trouble. Not that you're necessarily safe now, but you are from the snake at least. ;)

Brandishing his torch and scimitar, Gwillt steps into the snake's lair and carefully makes his way to explore it and ensure there are no mates or young about. If there aren't, and if he feels it is safe to do so, Gwillt will then try to move Grim inside the snake lair.

Then he will return to where he heard the soft tinkle of coin and see what he can find...

Could use a potion of healing about now! ;)

It did do a lot of damage. Too bad about the whole barbarian/magical healing bit getting in the way. If Grim had been at full HP, he'd still be up. Don't know any easy way around that, though. One of the minuses of the class, I guess...

Brandishing his torch and scimitar, Gwillt steps into the snake's lair and performs a cursory inspection of the snakes lair. His initial discovery is that the rest of the lair is devoid of other reptilian threats. Just around the left corner of the lair, a pile of epidermis' are found in a heap. A glint in the opposite corner (marked with "c's") designate the location of a decent sized pile of coins.

The above inspection and the careful relocation of the fallen barbarian take about 10 minutes and, while it probably has several minutes left, Gwillt's torch begins to sputter.

Gwillt prepares a second torch, but does not light it until the first has but minutes left.

During the remaining time on the first torch, he sifts through the coins to see if there is more a glint of silver or copper or gold. He also keeps an eye out for anything like rings or gems or jewelry - anything of value that might be more portable. Once he does that, he pokes through the skins with his sword to make sure nothing is hidden there.

Gwillt quickly pokes through the abandoned skins and finds nothing, other than potentially the snakes preferred spot to undertake its molting. Moving to the opposite side of the room, he sifts through the coins and finds a nice mixture of copper, silver and gold. He estimates there to be several hundred coins in total. Mixed in with the coins the ranger manages to spot a simple bronze ring, but no other items of potential value jump out during your cursory examination of the pile.

His torch begins to sputter out while searching through the coins so a new one is lit (please mark off from your inventory).
