Family Friendly Crazy Old Coots

#1 Post by Leitz »

Sounds like a game name, but it's an observation about the USS forums. A FB contact asked about games her teen daughter could join, and I felt confident enough in you all to recommend our forums. Thank you for maintaining a high standard of family friendliness, and I apologize for the times I've not met my own hope.

I'm family friendly?

Are you sure about that? :o :D

But I will admit to my old coot like ways even if I am only almost 40 ;)

LOL, I think it depends on how you define family friendly.

I'm pretty certain that we have younger folks here. Though, in general, the younger you are I think the more you skew toward 5e if you want to play D&D. Also Discord (or what I call play-by-post) games seem to be more popular. My kids from the 11yo to the 20yo all play 1e, though the three oldes also all play 5e - 2 in their HS and one in her university dorm. My oldest actually DMs two 5e games, at least, at her university.

While some of our games might delve into more mature subject matter, I don't think we get much past PG-13 here, and that's the way I like it for sure. :)
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Well, my games are NOT for children; mine are more in the (old) PG to R rating scale, often with mature themes and violent, gore-filled descriptions in combat. In fact, I wish there was a content rating scale for games, similar to what I've experienced on at least one other gaming forum.
But then, I've always run a "mature" game, whether in RL or online. ;)

I think family friendly is certainly in the eyes of the beholder. RPG's tend to be on the violent side, some have horror aspects. I am in a game that recently had the death of a young child. If I were DMing a game I would certainly like to know if I had a younger participant. Not that my games are more then PG-13 but you never know where the players might take something. Overall though the majority of the games I have played in would be fine for a younger player.

Funny thing is what you call "OLD School R rated" I look back at movies from the 80's and 90's and the content in a PG-13 movie is what would be called R today. So Gary you are an "Old School PG-13" rated DM ;)

Greg is cool with more mature stuff in games, just not in the more public bits of the forum :D
And nothing ridiculously off the wall, beyond R, obviously.
