Fate Points and their use (Updated)

#1 Post by Vargr1105 »

Each character has a pool of Fate Points which they can use at any time. Players do not now the precise number of FPs their PC has, the value is presented as an interval. Fate points do not regenerate in the course of the adventure.

The following are the possible uses of Fate Points:

1 Fate Point allows:

- An automatic success in any Ability Score check without need for rolling

- Making an extra attack in a melee round

- Automatically hit an opponent without need for an attack roll

- Climb without falling (no roll necessary)

- Catch something tossed to the character

- Leap a chasm

- Tear a door of its hinges (no Open Doors roll necessary)

- Ignore a minor wound (1d8 points of damage inflicted in one blow can be ignored)

- Knocking out a person with a fist or weapon (see "Death Blow" below)

- Making any Saving Throw with a target number of 2

2 Fate Points allow:

- Recovery of Hit Points equal to a Cure Serious Wounds spell as the character "pulls himself together"

- Attempting a "Death Blow". If a sufficiently high roll is rolled on the To Hit die, an opponent has been struck dead with one blow. If the die roll is less they have been strucked (or missed) normally. Earl Aubec achieves a death blow on a 15, while Jhary-a-Conel on performs one on a 20. To hit modifiers external to the character (charging, flanking, etc) are counted to determine a death blow. The player can declare a death blow post-facto whenever he rolls a natural 20 if he has the fate points to spend and wishes to.

- Climbing while carrying another person

- Make two (2) extra attacks in a round

3 Fate Points allow:

- Performing an heroic actions beyond the scope of the rules and the ones listed here.

Fate Points cannot:

- Affect a die roll that has already been made

Some NPCs may have Fate Points of their own. Negating a deathblow costs 2 Fate Points, or 1 Fate Point with only a 50% chance of surviving.

I have updated the text on Fate Points to include data from the CB line of modules where they were introduced.

And just a few more specifications:

- Fate Points cannot be spent to accomplish more than one action per round. For example, you cannot spend 2 FPs to make an extra attack and have that attack hit automatically. It is one or the other.

- FPs spent for an automatic success in any Ability Score check without need for rolling also apply to Non-Weapon Proficiency checks.
