The forums will get an update in the next few days

The forums will receive a much needed update in the next few days. They are currently running on a version of phpBB that is about five years old. The hosting company has told me that they want everything updated to work with the newer version of PHP (the server-side software language that these forums are written with).

During this process, the forums will be down for an hour or two, and I'll post again when I know exactly when that will happen.

There should be no loss of data during the update. You may have to log in again. The forums will still be the phpBB software, just the newest version. So the forums will look a little different, but the way things work in general will not change.
