Chat functionality?

#1 Post by tibbius »

Did you just add this?

I could see it being pretty cool alternative to Discord etc.

No we've had it for a while. It is pretty cool, we've even run a game or two that way. But it never really took off. But the one or two chat games run went successfully IIRC. :)
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Less bells and whistles than Discord, but I kind of like things streamlined. Plus I believe you can roll dice right in chat.
What more do you need! :D

I've enjoyed games I've played in Skype just as much as the ones I've played on Roll20. Okay that tangent over, I'm terrible at chat games... I've tried here as well at Dragonsfoot.

The file will probably be huge since I'm responding from my phone, but it is the leftmost option up near the 'search' and control panel.

Cool thanks. By the way Dave your new solo game looks interesting, I plan on following along. I need to come up with something to run my wife through since our normal group isn't getting together and she doesn't play online so it needs to be a DM with 1 player.

I actually ran a live chat game using the built-in functionality, here:
Honestly, it was a lot of fun. A LOT(!) of typing for the DM, though. I'm sure it'd be more manageable if you did some preparation ahead of time (e.g. typed out planned boxed text ahead of time).

I'd be willing to try it again. Definitely.

I'm pretty sure the post linked to in that Tweet I found has a bunch of 1:1 options as well.

When I'm back home and not on my phone I could better help locate some options.

Rex, I know this isn't exactly you weren't exactly looking for, but Mike Shea (Sly Flourish) is running Enrique Bertran (NewbieDM) through Dragon of Icespire Peak in a 1:1 game, which they're apparently podcasting. The third session was just released today:
I haven't listened to it (yet), but I'm guessing, since that adventure was not written as a solo adventure, they might spend a bit of time in the first episode discussing their plans for adopting the game to a 1:1 format.

Anyway, I thought it might help.

I take this back. I own the adventure (on D&D Beyond), but haven't read it yet, so I just went to check it out and saw this:

That might be a possibility for you.

Thanks Dave, I was looking at getting the Essentials box anyway so that might be perfect.

I don't think there's a way to download it. I remember, when I tried to run a chat game, I just made sure to copy-and-paste the transcript before signing out: here.

Yup that's how they do it on other forums as well, cut and paste: CTL-A, CTR-C then paste it onto a WORD doc or whatever. I think it's the only way.

Smart to put the chat into a collapsible quote.

You might need to play around with this.

I searched "rolls 3d" in the transcript from my game and it would make three rolls, but list the results individually and not sum them.

I'm not sure if the roller in the chat handles calculations?

It might not perform any arithmetic.

You can perform those calculations manually, or use the actual die roller from the site and just paste those results.
