"Concerning the Rebellion of Odawal"
Being a detailed description of the first battle, told by Morod the Red, a priest and historian of Brahmu.

"In the 400th Year of the Pharaoh there was rebellion in Odawal. I was there the summer before, and saw with my own eyes the indulgent pleasures that had befallen the city. The Odawalites have a little bit of civilized learning in them, which rivals all of the better cities in Hikuptah, but they have suffered long from the same vice that plagues all Hikuptans: the Odawalites confuse nobility with pampering, and dilute their good traits by always chasing after this perfume or that gilded chariot. I have seen one man beating his breast in the street because another man took one of his finer robes in a dice game, even though he still wore a robe which I could see was more expensive than the one he lost! I offered him my own simple robe and a clap on the ear, but he only spat at my feet and left to beat his breast somewhere else.

Because of this vice, the people of Odawal became wretched, and were like dogs snapping at the heels of sheep and begging their master for scraps of food. This means that the sheep are the pious people and priests, and the master is the city of Wohahat, where every person in Odawal wishes he lived. The temples of Odawal were without offerings, except when someone took a rich calf and said aloud, 'Look at how I give this rich calf for the offering.' The worst offence, however, came on the third holy day of the year, when the High Priest went with his slave to buy new clothes instead of beginning the day's offering at the appropriate hour. The pious priests were enraged, and later that day one of the lammasu statues who guard the city gates began to crumble. We knew this was a sign that the lammasu spirits had forsaken Odawal, and we left the city and returned to Brahmu.

The Angel of Death began to visit the homes because there were no lammasu to keep it away, and the people grew restless and angry. They asked the Satrap to rebuild the statues, but he ignored them. The Satrap—this is Astelax, who is still Satrap and a loyal man of the Nomarch such as few are these days—said to them, 'You spend your money on rich living rather than on offerings. Spend your money on offerings and the lammasu will return.' This is what he said.

Now Satrap Astelax was building his palace at that time, which was not yet complete. He had sent architects to the Pharaoh's Own City, so that they could model his palace on one of the minor palaces there, the one that rests at the foot of the western hill. Those who despised Astelax saw this and heaped blame upon him for sending his slaves to build his palace instead of rebuilding the statues. When his taxmen came to their doors they called him the Nomarch's lapdog, and asked if he would send the Angel of Death if they did not pay their taxes.

This is how things went that year, until the High Priest and several others declared that Astelax was not fit to rule Odawal. They brought forth Brielsunat, who was once a High Priestess in Wohahat and a distant cousin of the Nomarch, and tried to make her the Satrap. They could not do so, and Astelax expelled them from the city. From there they travelled to Verapadra and stayed there to gather up an army. Then they marched to Odawal, but tricked the Satrap into believing that they would attack the city. His guards were placed all along the outer wall, but they saw no enemy, except for a messenger who came running from the east to tell them that the rebels were marching along the river, destroying the villages and boats as they went. The Satrap was angered and sent his army to destroy the rebellion."

The Armies

The Army of Satrap Astelax
Led by the Foot of the Satrap (the marshall-general of the Satrap's army). All PC and NPC captains are automatically assumed to be nobles, councillors and elders (including the bonus to Leadership). Each NPC leader in the army must roll Leadership individually, to reflect that the officer positions are hereditary and occupied by nobles.

Army Roster: 2000 points, humans only. If a pre-rolled PC joining the army isn't human, then they suffer -1 to LD during the battle. No more than 50% of the figures in the army can be mounted.

Starting Position: The Satrap's army will begin in the west, approximately 12 hours' march from the river.

Victory Conditions: The Satrap's army wins if it can destroy half of the Rebel army's troops. Light skirmishers do not count toward the total (i.e., foot troops who have no armour, use only free weapons, and are deployed in skirmish order).

The Exiled Army of Brielsunat
Led by a captain of some renown. You may roll Leadership for all purchased NPC captains in this army and assign the scores as you wish, to reflect that the rebels are organized by merit and ability.

Army Roster: 1000 points, with no restrictions on race, equipment or organization.

Starting Position: The Rebels will begin at some point along the river.

Victory Conditions: The Rebels win if they can destroy three villages, or route the Satrap's army by destroyed one third of its troops. Light skirmishers do not count toward the total (i.e., foot troops who have no armour, use only free weapons, and are deployed in skirmish order).

Copied from the private thread, since we're moving everything to the public forum now:

Here are maps for Rossik, who's having trouble with Roll20. Rex, go ahead and keep using using R20 at your prerogative, since you can move your own tokens around and all of that, but Rossik will have to give his orders here in thread.

Here's the main map: download/file.php?id=14596

ROSSIK: Here is a visual of your updated situation (see the above post).

(Rex's army starting position, and supposed enemy disposition to the south):

REX: You move south along the road, making good time. An hour before sunset a messenger from your vanguard rides back, waving his arm wildly. "Camel riders up the road, one mile off! We count perhaps 80 (16 figures). They are kicking up so much dust on the road, we cannot tell if anyone follows them. We approached the wadi to the east for a higher view, but we spotted another great body of men lurking along the ridge line, and have decided not to risk getting closer to identify them, since our horses would not do well fighting up those steep ridges."

Now's probably the time to figure your army's marching order, and where you will be positioned. You have 2 units of horsemen (sword & jav), 2 units of infantry (sword & jav), and 2 units of archers (sword & bow, no shields).

Galen will order his cavalry to hold the road and make it look like there are more troops then there actually are, if it looks like they can't handle the opponent on the road they are to drop back, but delay as long as possible. The infantry in front followed by the archers will try to circle around and see who is on the ridge, if an enemy and they can they will attempt to attack with surprise (arrows, then javelins, then swords).

Your plans are enacted with haste. As the cavalry gallop off down the road, the infantry organize and begin to march up a shallow draw along the ridge line, scouting ahead for enemies.

Two hours go by, and your cavalry come pounding back up the road. The noble captains Eluti and Humbaba hail you for attention. "Lord! We've been beaten back—the approaching army is not large, perhaps half again the size of our cavalry. We held their front units back in a skirmishing formation until camelriders broke through toward Eluti's command. The horses went mad at the sight of the camels, and we would have been cut down there in a route—but the camelriders were impetuous and caused disorder amongst the ranks of their own troops. Eluti was eventually able to retreat under cover of Humbaba's skirmishing, and here we stand. We reckon 20 minutes before they arrive."

1st Cavalry (Eluti), 10/12 figures remaining
2nd Cavalry (Humbaba), 10/12 figures remaining

You can still see your infantry far off in the distance, having finally just mounted the eastern ridge more than a mile off. To the best of your abilities you can't see any action going on up there.

Gather up the cavalry and move to reinforce the infantry. (Also use them to shield the cavalry if necessary).
