Objectively speaking, I think Grimnail played his character perfectly. Let's not forget, a barbarian is not about to do a magic-user any favors (like suppressing its natural instinct to attack).

That is a bit of a misquote, Dave. You cut out the part where I said, "... the rest of the party...". Here is the full quote:

While it is true Grim would know nothing of the others' battle tactics, the rest of the party has been in two significant large fights up to this point (three, if you count the first part of this trog battle) and has seen the caster use AOE spells to great effect. We should have worked together better, relying on him to reduce the number of trogs we had to face all at once. That is character knowledge, not meta-gaming.

Sorry if it wasn't clear that I was excluding him from the bit about Garth's spell casting abilities... By "we", I meant the rest of us who were going at the trogs.

I think people do barbarians a disservice by assuming they have a base level of intelligence and are completely instinctual. Even the trogs know to lead a fight with ranged weapons before you engage in melee.

I'm not denying that, and I didn't mean for my response to come across as being adversarial. Taking off the DM hat for a moment, it just makes sense to me that a (1) half-orc (2) barbarian would rush into action. To me, those two points alone justify Grimnail's decision. I quoted the "magic user" part because it was just another factor. I don't imagine a half-orc barbarian would be thrilled having to restrain itself to allow ranged attackers to fire off missiles, but it certainly wouldn't wait for a spell caster to prepare and cast a spell. That's just how I picture it anyway.

Grimnail cries out in frustration and becomes a whirling vortex of poorly aimed hand axes, but this chaotic method of attack is apparantly enough to distract his opponents (e1, e2, e6, e4^) as none of them are able to sneak past the barbarian's reflexes (for the record, I am giving Grimnail full dexterity bonuses against three of the four (where it takes a 20 to hit... and there were three 19's!), with 'rear' attacks for the fourth attacker (e4^)).

Ewell lashes out with his longsword, but the sight of the two troglodytes (e5, e11) rushing at him, after they dropped Shannigans moments earlier, is enough of a distraction causing the knight to miss... and he pays for it, as one javelin (-2) and two claws (-2, -1) are able to penetrate his defenses.

Next to Ewell, Kaltar attempts to bash the troglodyte (e7) he has already weakened but is unable to connect, and he suffers another scratch from a claw attack as a result (-1).

Garth, seeing the troglodyte (e8) he hit with his sling turn on him, quickly switches to his scimitar. Acting first, he slashes at the oncoming beast, damaging it heavily, and manages to avoid the spearing attempt the scaly foe issues in retaliation.

Alordan, seeing one of the troglodytes (e8) rush at Garth, targets the other unengaged foe (e10). He sinks two arrows into the beast, which wheels around and wildly hurls a javelin at the ranger.

The other ranger, Gwilt finds himself with his hands full, facing off against two troglodytes (l4, e12). His efforts at keeping the pair from flanking him are enough to cause him to miss, but he avoids being struck himself.
