Tunnel Complex, 298D/81 (Morning)

MacMak and Belial move over to the barrier. It is translucent, shiny and appears solid. MacMak reaches to collect some, but has difficulty separating a piece from the whole (It's consistency is that of old taffy). The mutant seagull bends the removed section multiple times, but it does not break. Belial sniffs the fence and acknowledges the repellent scent emanates from this material. Neither can determine the origin of the substance.

Belial looks over the fence to see if anything is hidden behind it. All he sees is the continuation of the lower rail and artificial stone segment. 40ft beyond the fence sits the once-orange contraption.

Silvestri would like to examine the strange vehicle.

Denslow questions the use of this object. He proposes you return to the ring corridor and descend the other drop tubes.

Kurot expresses interest in exploring beyond the fence, speculating there is a reason someone wants to keep the Thorax Scavengers at bay.

Silvestri

"I agree with Kurot, we should look for more signs of this intelligence beyond the fence. It might have been the same person who repaired the ancient apparatus in the room we were in. This could all be years old anyway, but we should see"

Bruce nods at Kurot's suggestion, indicating he sides with his android cohort.

Tunnel Complex, 298D/81 (Late Morning)

You prod and carefully remove enough of the organic fence, so you are able to move past and deeper into the eastern tunnel.

Approaching the orange contraption, MacMak volunteers to clamber up the steps and onto the open deck. Once he determines the construct is safe to stand on, others mount the vehicle and investigate. Frank moves to the far end of the deck and watches MacMak, who uses the steps to walk the tunnel and scout beyond the vehicle.

Image

Silvestri leads the inspection of the object. A seat and control pit, similar to the travel pods, is located inside the middle enclosure. It has windows on all four sides and contains a seat and control tray which rotate 360-degrees, allowing the operator to face either direction. Metal cabinets with a large side door are positioned in front and back of the control pit. The doors swing up and open, latching at the bottom. They are accessible from the open deck. Both cabinets are empty save some minor dust and debris settled in the corners. The rails and steps are an artificial bone-like material with the balance being dull silver metal parts, exposed where the paint has flaked off.

You do not find any sort of manual or instructions to operate this vehicle. The controls appear similar enough to the travel pods, so those skilled at operating that vehicle can drive this one.

MacMak scouts ahead, 100ft ahead. He sees the artificial stone tunnel and metal rails continue beyond the torchlight. There are no indications of activity within the dark void.

Silvestri takes the controllers seat and waits for everybody to settle themselves in safely before starting the contraption moving, slowly at first while he gets used to it.

Tunnel Complex, 298D/81 (Mid Day)

Silvestri reviews the operator’s pit to familiarize with the controls. He swings the master lever and the platform comes to life, powered by an unseen energy source. Lights shine bright from the front and back, illuminating the tunnel 100ft in both directions. He waits for the others to climb on board and then slowly moves to the east and down the tunnel. This vehicle has less mass then the travel pods, so the rate of travel is decreased (3 mph) to prevent a jarring ride on the ancient rail tracks. Those on the deck are exposed to the ambient noise of the vehicle sliding down the tracks and the air moving past. Its less comfortable then the hyperpods.

You travel just over an hour, passing a single Station Stop on the way, before the lights of the trolley reveal an obstruction ahead. Silvestri stops the cart about 50ft before a barrier constructed of mushroom trunk logs. Several lie parallel to the lower rail and then two rows are across the tunnel on top of them and them lower rail. (See picture below)

Image

Belial catches the scent of unwashed mammals within 180ft of your location. He assumes the odor is from ahead and beyond the barrier. Frank signals ‘silence’ and you become motionless to enhance hearing. You begin to hear sounds of movement and possible grunts ahead. Shadows flicker against the walls of the tunnel on the other side of the barrier.

Denslow climbs the log barrier, hoping that his own shape will make for good camouflage. He climbs just high enough to look over the top and see what is beyond, so he can report back.

Kurot looks for a gap between the mushroom logs that will let him peer down the tunnel. He'll sight his rifle down the gap if there's room.

Tunnel Complex, 298D/81 (Mid Day)

Denslow, Kurot, Belial, MacMak and Frank dismount the open-deck vehicle and cautiously make their way ahead to the barricade, warry about the signs of distant activity. Silvestri, Ron and Bruce wait in reserve to observe their companions and provide security against a rear attack.

As the group walks down the tunnel, Belial spreads his wings indicating he is going to fly ahead. The mutant baboon reconsiders after concerned looks from his comrades. He concedes to knuckling forward with the others, sniffing the air and recognizing the odor is growing more intense. During their movement, the group hears the sounds and grunts getting louder, echoing through the artificial stone tunnel.

Denslow and MacMak are the first to approach the obstacle, and they carefully climb the logs to get a better view. The plantient tries to hide among the fungal logs (This will be taken into consideration should the opportunity arise) and looks over the top. MacMak joins him and activates his ultravision. Kurot peers through a gap between the logs and looks for movement in the shadows beyond. The android aims his rifle past the barrier and waits. Frank and Belial remain in reserve for the others to report.

Those looking beyond the fence see at least a dozen hulking humanoids with gray skin, white hair and ratty clothing clambering down the tunnel. They have sharp teeth and wield crude, all metal weapons recognizable as swords, axes, spears and clubs. They are huddled together, grunting and mumbling at each other, slowly creeping forward. They are around 40ft from the blockade.

OOC: MacMak can discern the greatest details due to his ultravision. Denslow and Kurot can see only shadowy outlines, occasionally illuminated by the vehicle light filtering through the logs and reflecting off the aged tunnel stone.

Denslow slinks back, letting the others know what he's seen.

I say we attack. My explosive fruit could make a dent in them and any other ranged and area effect weapons you have might end the battle before they can close with those crude weapons.

MacMak describes the creatures as "morlocks". The Creator told him they are a race of ragtags that live in the sewers, served by a master called Calysto. Or something like that.

He agrees with the goo bomb plan. Also he consider asking later if anyone have a better weapon than the one his own (a crossbow)
