[Waitlist] 5e Urban Investigation/Adventure

#1 Post by dmw71 »

Amazing! This game is already full, but I will accept new requests to be added to a waitlist. As this is a new ruleset for some, and play-by-post will be new to others, there's always a chance something doesn't pan out.

Player List
  1. Scott308
  2. prospero
  3. BearSiren817
  4. ravenn4544
  5. Rex
  6. OGRE MAGE

Waitlist

---

I just went through a single-session module earlier today that was a lot of fun!

Yes, this will be a 5e game for new 1st level characters, but I think it will really be a good introduction for anyone who's even potentially interested giving the latest edition a shot. If you're on the fence, it's worth it.

As the title indicates, this adventure is very much an urban adventure where the party is tasked with conducting an investigation. This game will involve a healthy problem solving, and deciphering/following clues... plus more than a few chances for combat. ;)

If necessary, I would be willing to relax my normal daily posting requirement if that is a concern.

Yes, I just launched a 2e game which will be starting soon (hopefully sometime early next week), but I had such a fun time playing in this game that I don't want to wait to run it... and purchased the PDF of it from my car before leaving to drive back home after the session today.

(I just hope I'm not overselling it, and that I can run it as well as the DM that ran it for me did.)

Any takers?

I'm interested! I think I can come up with a pretty interesting character for this game. I am willing to step aside for players new to 5e that want to try it out, however.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Nice. My current 5e players are definitely welcome.

I really think you'll enjoy it.

Don't worry about stepping aside. Not only do I fear I'm going to struggle to get the number of players needed (it is "optimized for a group of five characters with an average party level (APL) of 1st-level."), but it does provide guidelines for adjusting the game for more powerful groups.

There were five of us in the group I played in today, and I was the only 1st level character. One was 4th, two were 3rd, and one was 2nd... and it worked.

So, assuming the game gets off the ground, you're in.

We may be up to two three players. :)

I've been chatting on Facebook with the DM that ran the game for me earlier today and he's expressing an interest in playing. (No pressure on me. ) He's also trying to recruit a friend of his to join as well, so this may very well be happening! :)

(For the record, two of the guys that played with me earlier today actually played the same module the previous night, with a different DM, so they naturally just left most of the decision making up to the rest of us.)

Count me in!

Willing to round out the group character class wise.
Current idea is grave domain cleric from xanathars.
Or a monk.

Ole bearsiren herself plays an excellent rogue.

Looking forward to this!

I’m a 5e expert concerning rogues. I think this is definitely right up my alley as I love gumshoe type games including the problem solving, deciphering/following clues as you described. Looking forward to trying this out as I haven’t done something online like this before. Thanks for the invitation!

This sounds fun Dave, but I am a bit confused.

Players played in the exact same adventure, twice in 2 days?

Your DM wants to play in the same module that he just ran for you?

Isn’t that a bit out of the ordinary for any RPG? Or am I missing something in the 5E mechanics?

I'm guessing this is Adventurers League and the people that played back to back days were running different characters each day. You can play an adventure multiple times, but you have to have a different character each time. Same with DMing and then playing. The problem is when people who are familiar with an adventure use player knowledge to their character's advantage and/ or drive the action so players who have not seen the adventure before don't really have any say in how things progress.

I am not familiar with how Adventures League works, but if it allows doing the things you just described, it doesn’t sound like anything I would be interested in.

I am not sure why anyone would even want to play in the same adventure multiple times. How does one get any enjoyment or excitement from playing in the same games over and over again? Is that an easier and faster way for someone to level up their official AL characters or something?

I am not trying to create conflict here, and I apologize if this seems like thread hijacking. But, I can’t be the first one to inquire about these things. Will this game be run as an official AL game, Dave?

Yes, and both agreed that the two sessions were different (and both preferred the game the second time). Different DM running the game, with different group of players. I can see how that would make for a different experience each time.

How many players here on the boards have run through B2 multiple times? Show of hands. Or T1? I wouldn't exactly say it's common, per se, but it's not unheard of.

Think of it like this: You give the exact same screenplay to Quentin Tarantino and Nora Ephron. I guarantee, even though they're both working with the exact same published words, the end product will be nothing alike!

Disclaimer:
I am not in any way, shape, or form claiming to be nearly as talented as either of those writer/directors -- just making a point. ;)
Or, how many people will watch the exact same movie multiple times (e.g. Office Space), or have gone back and re-watched a TV show (e.g. Game of Thrones)? I am definitely guilty of this (in fact, I literally just finished re-watching Breaking Bad the other night). And movies or TV shows never change -- you're always watching the exact same material, and even then sometimes the experience can be different.

I get what you're saying, though, and it is why, until recently, I never ran published material out of fear that players with access to the material, or previous experience playing through it, would "ruin" the game. There may be an occasional post or request that is maybe a bit too specific, but I honestly haven't found my previous fears to be warranted. A game can still be fun, even with advanced player knowledge.

I can't speak to the game from the previous night as I wasn't a part of it, but the game I played in was official Adventure League.
OGRE MAGE wrote:Will this game be run as an official AL game, Dave?
I'm not even sure if you can run AL via play-by-post? But, no, this will not be an official AL game (but I will likely borrow some of the AL rules).

I kind of addressed the "why" in my previous response. I know I had a lot of fun as a player in the adventure yesterday, and immediately started to make plans to run through it a second time (as a DM) as soon as possible. It was just that much fun.

I'll also note that, with the exception of my Sunless Citadel game, I do not announce what module I am even running. Yes, my DM from yesterday (prospero) knows what it is because of an outside conversation, but no one else will. Even Scott308, who's far more experienced with 5e than I am, may not know what it is while I'm running it.

I'll just finish with this:

If knowing that one of the players in the game has previous knowledge and familiarity with the adventure will ruin the experience for you -- yeah, probably don't join. But, if you're curious, about the module itself, or to give 5e a try, then I would encourage you to at least give it shot.

That makes four, which means this thing will officially be taking off. But there is still room for one (or two) more. :)

Of course, man.

And then there were five. I think there's still room for one more, then...

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I may need to form a waiting list for a 5e game.

Done.

Everyone that has signed up should have access to the new game forum, plus a private player forum. If not, or if you have any questions, definitely feel free to let me know.

More general questions or requests to join can still be made here, but for those already in the game, let's use the OOC I thread there for any specific questions about the game, or the rules, or to discuss party composition/character concepts.

You make great points, Dave!

You know what, I will give this game a try if you’ll still have me. You seem extremely excited about it, so it must be good! :D

I have a bit of experience with 5E, and even own the PH.
