Chapter 27 - Let's go smell the flowers

#1 Post by greyarea »

You descend the tube, the smell of a stinking cloud following. This appears to be the final level of the drop tube.

Halls are dark to either side. Dense foliage and the strong smells and sounds of nature are ahead. The area is junglelike, with many plants of strange and colorful types, many unfamiliar even to our Druid.

"Huh," says Ulster insightfully.

"Shall we head in, or do you want to scout the halls first?"

Algrim stands there with a look of mirth in his eyes thinking back to entering the tube then gets a stern soldier like look again "Aye scoutin is a good idea."

Metal halls or strange jungle... with a shrug. Danger either way, I'm game to start with the halls.

Grimes-Fighter

Grimes volunteers to scout ahead invisibly if needed. Just point him in the right direction.

Grimes - Fighter

Grimes agrees. "Okay, Deets. Let's send him and I'll follow him down invisible-like and watch him for a bit to see if anything happens."

He gives a thumbs up and points at the golem and says "Let's go, little guy."

You head sundialwise.

The passage heads down and the golem quickly turns and, though beeps and whistles, you get the impression that this goes further below decks. You decide to explore this deck a bit more, finding a few closets with broken mops, empty boxes, and so forth, and eventually come to an open doorway. Peeking in you see a lounge of some sort, quite dark within.

You swear you see movement: some sort of quick animals in the dark.

Animals?

Ulster chitters, squeaks, chirps, and makes assorted other animal sounds, all translating to one basic question: "Hi there! I'm a friend. Who's there?"

Cast speak with animals.

One of the creatures flits into view.

It flies erratically, staying far from the light. A strange sound, not unlike what Algrim made in the shaft earlier, is emitted and you can see a haze form behind the creature. To the druid reaction [2d6-1] = 3-1 = 2, it says,
This is our cave. Who are you, friend, that you visit us?

Ulster marvels at the gas bats. He replies in a squeaking voice:
"My name is Ulster. I take care of trees, and animals who live in the trees, and other animals, like you. I would like to know more about you and your cave. Have you been to the other caves in this place?"

Castinus - human thief

Castinus tries his best not to let his hand move to his sword handle. He grimaces at the sound, and most likely stench that's to follow, then presents himself as unthreateningly as possible.

The strange gas-bat replies,
I have never ventured from this cave, We get bugs aplenty to eat from the large area outside. Some of my brothers have been to the large area, but many do not return. Horrors and too much light await outside. Our cave is our home and most of us do not venture from beyond its walls.

Ulster answers, trying to get any information the small-brained creatures might have.
"What kind of horrors?"

The creature lets off a small *toot* and replies,
I've only heard stories, but they are not good. There are plants and animals that eat us.

There are animals with tentacles and one with a great mouth and tongue. My cousin was eaten by it, the tongue was apparently many body-lengths long and my cousin was eaten in a heartbeat. Even the swamp ground walks in great mounds, shambling down the way, who grab at us while we eat flies and pull us in, never to be seen again.

There are flowers that, if you try to drink of their nectar, drink back, striking with their own tongues and eating us. There is one kind of plant that killed many of our kind as they ate the berries--giant serrated things like teeth grabbing and grinding us alive. I could hear their screams from the cave!

I've vowed never to leave my cave except perhaps to go to the hall you are in. Sometimes we can find yummy bugs there.
The haze around the creature's back end reappears and it moves forward from the gassy release, its wings acting more for guidance than for locomotion, it seems.

Ulster relays the gas bat's information to the rest of the party. He considers making friends with some of them; they might be useful scouts. But they also seem to get eaten a lot. "Let's leave these creatures alone and move on," he says.
