Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
Bandy frowns. "That's where we buried what's-his-face... Kellstrom. Not a very nice guy. Not terribly keen on camping near his body, though? But... if everyone else agrees, I'll go along."

Sorry for lack of action. Busy day today.
I suppose our current vantage point doesn't let us see whether the stone slab is still glowing? Fingers would be keen to see how long the glowing lasts. Exploring the tomb tonight doesn't seem smart, but Fingers might "charge up" the stone tomorrow morning, assuming it's no longer glowing then, to see if that makes any difference to what happens in the tomb.

Markd agrees to camp wherever the rest want. With a watch schedule of course. He can take any shift.

Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
After checking the henge above, the group returns to the tomb entrance. They change their mind, however, opting to no longer enter at dusk but instead camp and wait for the dawn. The former expedition's campsite remains the most secure nearby, allowing them to watch the tomb entrance from a respectful distance, even though the cairn to Kellstrom creeps them out a bit.
Father Allmond heals Bandy's minor wounds, then he and Heingist settle in to get rest so they can be fully refreshed in their divine favor before entering the crypt. This leaves Bandy, Markd, and Fingers (with Sprinkles) for watch duty. Bandy goes to get some rest for a later shift while Fingers and Markd settle in for the first watch.
The sun sets and dusk fades to twilight, then to night as they sit around their campfire. It is barely dark enough for the stars to be visible when Sprinkles begins baying an alarm! The others are woken (and may act on round 2) by the noise in time to see the six gargoyles diving from the sky at the party.

So much for the gargoyles only attacking when attacked.
Run, I presume? Fingers has a weapon that could hurt them, but I'm guessing the NPCs don't. Onlyme, does Markd have any handy magical doodads that can convince the gargoyles to leave us alone?

OOC: Bandy's longsword is only magical vs. undead.

Okay, then.
"Oh, crap!" cries Fingers. "Run!"

Bandy pulls out a small statue of a griffon and says a command word. As soon as the griffon springs to life, Bandy jumps up on its back and takes off into the air, fleeing until he knows he is no longer being followed by gargoyles.

Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
Before I do that... It would be obvious that you can't outrun a flying creature, almost ever. You could run for the tomb, but they get two rounds of free hits with +4 before you reach it.
Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
Okay, so is there any other option we have other than standing and fighting six flying creatures that can only be hit by magical weapons? There's nothing like cover anywhere nearby?
If we stand and fight, we're dead. If we run for the tomb, we're pretty much dead. If we flee, at least there's a chance they're just trying to chase us off. And if they aren't? Well, we're pretty much dead anyway.

Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
Standard encounter: if you flee they might not follow (p. 52, Labrynth rule) and if you stand and fight you might win a morale check (p. 56). Risking death is a given in any adventure. Certain death is not.
Re: Expedition: Fingers/The Ghostly Trial - 16 July 2021
"Oh, crap," says Fingers. "If they wanted to kill us, why didn't they do it before? Stupid gargoyles."
"Heel," he commands, stepping between the gargoyles and his dog. "You stay back there, now. You'd break your teeth biting these things." He grabs Silmaril and draws a bead on the lead gargoyle and lets fly an arrow that sails far wide.
"Crap."
'Silmaril' (THAC0 18): [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7, [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6
Fingers will attempt to keep himself between Sprinkles and any attacking gargoyles.

Bandy tries to do a fighting retreat back to the tomb.
"Make your way back to the tomb!"
Longsword THAC016 [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17 Damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2

Markd will also fight/retreat toward the tomb, hoping the gargoyles abort their dive bombing.
long sword+1(2undead) (Thac0 16) [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15; damage [1d8+2] = 2+2 = 4

Remember that Markd attacks twice. Holding for Heingist.
Fighting retreat takes four rounds, but has no AC penalties.

Fingers will try to shepherd Sprinkles along to stay with Markd and Bandy, keeping his dog behind him if possible.

oh yeah...
Markd swats a second time if they attack, but with less sense of awesomeness than before.

Hengist will make a fighting retreat for the tomb, defending himself with the staff.
Staff to hit (THAC0 19) = [1d20+4] = 18+4 = 22, Damge = [1d6+4] = 1+4 = 5
