Greetings!

#1 Post by sastaz »

Mattias from Sweden here. Been playing rpg:s since i was 13 (now 40), started out with the Mentzer Red Box when it was released in Sweden. DnD had serious competition from local Swedish rpg:s at the time, so my time was split between Red Box and the Swedish BRP "Drakar och Demoner".

Registering here today to play some PBP (is that the term?) actually.

Currently reading Skyrealms of Jorune :)

Ok, that's it. Over and out!

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

By the way, we do have a two post moderation policy - it’s to keep away trolls and spammers, we do get our fair share. So just know that you can’t post or PM without moderation until two posts have been approved. But hey, good news, you’re half way there!!
Welcome again! I’m sure several of our more friendly members will be along to say hi - no worries they won’t bite. If you have any questions please hit up a Mod or just put them out there. Unseen Servant is well known for its friendliness.
Be well Mattias,

Welcome aboard!
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Hey there! We have a similar backstory....I too started with the Mentzer Red Box (I'm 41...so close to you in age as well!)...however something I've learned is that most people when they say "red box" mean the Moldvay version which came out a few years earlier. Frankly, I think the Mentzer version is better (not just for nostalgic reasons....I bought both versions a few years ago and I must say, I just really prefer the latter, but to each their own! :) ).

Anyway, welcome aboard!

Emphasis mine.
I'm not a race-as-class kind of guy, being a hardcore AD&Der, but this phrase is just constructed so well I needed to give it props. :D

To me, Red Box means Mentzer. Moldvay is purple to me. I may refer to it as either the Moldvay Basic, Moldvay Purple, or just the Purple set. I'm not sure I've heard anyone reference Moldvay as "red" before.

This (race as) class warfare must stop. ;)

At least we can all agree that Moldvay has better cover art than Holmes and Mentzer, right?

Yes. This.

I was rather put out when they tried to release 5.0 as "Red Box".

<insert lots of bad words> there's no way that's Red Box. :x :|

Seriously, on almost all forums I've ever been on; "Red Box" almost universally means Moldvay.....and Mentzer is always "BECMI"......even though I totally agree....I think Moldvay's box is more Purple than anything and the book is kinda....I don't know...Orange-Red...where-as Mentzer's box and books are definitely RED-RED....but maybe I'm color blind....:)

As for art work; I will admit I am the biggest Elmore fan I know, so I'll go with Mentzer....but there is definitely SOMETHING about Otis' pictures that are seriously compelling and just SCREAM 'Old school D&D'! :)

But, to each his own! :)
