Dr. Ryerson:

"I can give Ursula a mild sedative that will keep her out of our hair for a while."
The Doctor first evaluates Ursula current condition with his medical tricorder before deeming it's safe to administer the sedative via hypospray.

Coxa II: The landing site
Stardate 2271.3.24: 1620h

The Janus is due to rendezvous in orbit at 1800.

Image

Dr. Ryerson carefully monitors Ursula with his medical tricorder, but the recent combat must have caused some of the cogs to come loose inside of the machine. After some trouble shooting and recalibrating, he records her life signs and administers an appropriate sedative to keep her under for two hours. She seems healthy enough to take at least two much such sedatives before it may harm her.

(I will presume that the same is done for Falfrax the priest, at the behest of the Coxans).

With that, the party sets out through the alien jungle, and on through the windswept savanna toward the village, the unconscious Ursula and Falfrax in tow.

Image

A herd of great ursanoids—perhaps the same that attacked the landing party yesterday—can be seen far off to the left, surveying the bipeds and triped with some interest, before slumping back down to nap and feed on exotic carcasses.

Image

The two large windmills that tower over the village spin relentlessly in the wind. Tarp awnings attached to the clay and wooden buildings flap and balloon out, threatening to be ripped straight off the buildings and blown away. Pollen and dust from the farming fields cloud the eyes and nostrils.

The village is a ghost town. Scorch marks blacken the walls. Toppled baskets roll through the dusty street. The corpse of a murdered Coxan lies in a doorway. Hemda cries out in terror, Watrius weeps in despair, and Byros clenches his jaw silently.

Out of the temple's shadowy recesses steps a figure—a woman—clad in the chain mesh uniform and burgundy sash of the Romulan Star Empire. She has a cold and calculating presence, exuding a hatred so pure it ceases to be an emotion. In her hand she holds a plasma gun like the one Centurion Carlax had, and she wears a thin helmet of jet-black Slaver alloy.

"You should not have abandoned the Slaver ruins before ensuring that our party was destroyed. It took me a few minutes to discover how to open the field from the inside, but it was elementary. If only you could see the marvels within those ancient walls. Such wonders of science and imagination!" The Romulan Commander indicates her helmet and the wide Slaver alloy belt wrapped about her waist. The helmet switches on and seems to give her eyes an eerie, superhuman glow.

She points to Ursula's sedated body. "I had hoped to distract you with the last of my underlings while I cleansed this place of records and escaped. But perhaps it is for the best that you are here. Your Federation may be ignoble, but you are warriors nevertheless, and deserve warriors' deaths. Once our weapon prototypes are completed, I will send an official message to your Star Fleet, recommending that you be honored as the first of your kind to have witnessed and died under the new power of the Romulan Empire."

She has her plasma weapon ready, but she continues to stand inside the recesses of the doorway, making no aggressive moves.

Actions?

Rolls:
Ryerson hypospray (MN 7 + 5 for med tricorder = 12): [3d6] = 14
Failed, takes a 10-minute turn to administer, with random duration.

Sedative will last [1d4] = 2 hours

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

Nadix is saddened to see the senseless destruction wrought upon the Coxan village.

When the responsible party reveals herself, he replies: "Commander, you've made a terrible mistake. We've been studying the Slaver artifacts in the science labs of our starship. They are fatal to non-Coxan lifeforms, emitting a deadly radiation that kills in mere days. You must have detected it.

"Your empire's great prize is a toxic poison, Commander. If you carry the artifacts onboard your ship, you'll never make it back to your homeworld alive.

"In fact, I can't imagine what that helmet is doing to your brain right now."

While bluffing, one of Nadix's arms gestures emphatically. Another quietly moves behind his back to unholster his phaser. A third reaches behind him for the Rod of Life. He readies for the opportune moment to seize the advantage!

Dr. Ryerson:

Building on the commanders bluff Dr. Ryerson holds up his medical tricorder and pretends to scan the Romulan from his position. "He right you know. Exposure to just the belt's radiation is enough to kill you within days. But with that helmet on it increases the radiation levels significantly. I estimate only hours left without proper treatment. Even now you should be feeling the effects: increased heart rate, perspiration, anxiety mixed with the sense of euphoria. Drop your weapon and remove the artifacts and I can start to administer a counter agent to stabilize you until we can get you aboard our ship for intense radiation decontamination."

Coxa II: The landing site

The Janus is due to rendezvous in orbit at 1800.

"…That's impossible," the Romulan Commander states defiantly. "I have had Dr. Moore's subatomic analysis reviewed twice by our computers." Her eyes flicker back and forth between Nadix and Ryerson, trying to decipher what they know. Then her view drops to Nadix's arms, and she notices the small movement behind his back! "Your foolish bluffs will not save you!" she shouts in anger, her eyes flashing with brilliant light!

But the brief hesitation is enough to give the party time to act out its spontaneous plan. As the diabolical Romulan Commander flips the charge on her plasma gun and dives for cover into the building, they reach for their own weapons!

Nearby, the heavy winds kick up a small dust devil through the street, and a tattered native blanket rolls and tumbles by.

Actions? (the Commander will be given an initiative penalty this round, and Nadix & Ryerson bonuses, to reflect their bluff)

Rolls:
Bluff check (vs Romulan Commander's MN of 13): [3d6] = 14

The Romulan Commander is bluffed momentarily!

Coxa II: Coxan Village
Stardate 2271.3.24: 1622h: Combat Round 1

The Janus is due to rendezvous in orbit at 1800.

Image

As the Romulan Commander tries to step away, Nadix and Ryerson produce phasers and release fiery coils of energy with pinpoint accuracy!

Image

A burst of color cackles in front of the Commander—she is surrounded by an energy force field, clearly an order of magnitude more powerful than the Federation's standard issue life support belts. The combined power of both phasers is just enough to break through the barrier, but their remaining power is hardly capable of doing anything more than singe the Commander's uniform.
The officers deduce that out of 17 points of combined damage 2 got through, which were shrugged off by the usual -1d6+LK defense. It seems the Commander's belt powers an energy field equal in strength to the Federation's heavy backpack rigs (15 points): they soak up hits indefinitely, but every time they get hit ≥ their capacity, they permanently lose 1 point of defense. By deduction, you may intuit that the Commander's energy shielding has dropped to 14 points.
Then, before everyone's bewildered eyes, the diabolical Romulan Commander vanishes into thin air! In her place is nothing but a faint, transparent glow in the shape of her silhouette. "There she is!" cries Ensign Patel. He and another ensign whip around and level their phasers at the roof of a random building, where the Commander is now inexplicably standing behind an adobe barrier, continuing to power up her plasma gun and smiling devilishly. They fire blindly in her direction and miss. "She's moving too fast, I can't hit her!"
Shooting at a speedily moving target is a huge disadvantage, as is shooting at a target taking cover. This means that in the round that the Commander teleports, she becomes effectively impossible to hit by all but perhaps Nadix.

One possibility is to set phasers to stun as a 'sweep' setting. Their range is only 4m and energy consumption is quadrupled (8 energy per shot for pistols, 20 for rifles), but anything in the front firing arc will be hit without needing to aim.
Chief Endilev allows his plasma weapon to charge its energy.

Actions?

Image

Rolls:
Ryerson and Nadix each get a +2 bonus to initiation.

url=http://www.unseenservant.com/default.as ... acid=11481]RomCom Initiation (-3 if shooting plasma gun): [1d6+3] = 2+3 = 5[/url] - 2 for bluff penalty = 3

Ensign Patel Initiation (rifle -3, DX +0): [1d6-3] = 5-3 = 2

Ensign 2 Initiation (rifle -3, DX +0): [1d6-3] = 4-3 = 1

Ensign 3 Initiation (pistol -2, DX +0): [1d6-2] = 4-2 = 2

Endilev Initiation (-3 if shooting plasma gun): [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6

ACTIONS
7. Nadix — shoots and hits! Disrupt damage [3d6] = 8 damage to shielding — nothing happens!

6. Endilev — charges plasma gun 1 round

5. Ryerson — shoots and hits! Disrupt damage [3d6] = 9 more damage to shielding, 2 points get through! — [1d6+1] = 2 points ignored by Commander's Luck, no damage!

3. Romulan Commander — RomCom Teleport (17): [3d6] = 10 Successfully teleports!

Ensigns must find the Romulan! Ensigns Recon (12/13/15): [4d6] = 10, [4d6] = 17, [4d6] = 9
Patel & Ensign 3 do!

2. Patel (rifle) — (target moved rapidly -3; target obscured -3 = needs to roll -2 to hit, impossible)

2. Ensign 3 (pistol) — (same mods… needs -3 to hit, impossible)

1. Ensign 2 (rifle) — looks around for target

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"She's moving too fast. We have to stop her before that plasma weapon is charged. Set phasers to 'sweep' and fire at will, gentlemen," Nadix says.

The Edosian officer keeps his own energy pistol set on "disrupt," hoping to damage her shields.

Star, does Nadix have the Rod of Life in one of his hands?
Can we see the Slaver artifacts in her possession? If yes, can we target them so that if any damage gets past her shields, it hits them? Thanks.

1) Yes.
2) It is obvious that her helmet and belt are of Slaver origin, though that is all the party can see. They both stand out enough that you can certainly aim for them directly.

Image

"Yes sir!" the ensigns reply, setting their phasers to a sweeping stun setting. Using phasers at that setting requires close range, and the crew begin to fan out and close in toward the building.

Dr Ryerson rushes forward with them, diving behind a large crate or wooden block of unknown purpose. One of the crewmen rushes up to the same piece of cover, using it to prop up his deadly phaser rifle.

"I've got her!" he shouts, blasting a wide cone of energy toward the building. The Romulan Commander's protective energy field sparks in a brilliant display and buckles, leaving her momentarily vulnerable!

Nadix tries to take advantage of the opportunity and aims for the Commander's Slaver helmet. He lines up his sights and knows instinctively that his shot will just about hit the target—but just before he presses the trigger, the Commander vanishes again into thin air!

"She's gone!"

"Where'd she go?!"

The wind blows ominously through the silent streets. After a quick spin around in all directions, no one can find the Romulan Commander. Very quickly the party is beset by the irrational feeling of being watched, and that behind every dark window lurks danger.

6. RomCom teleports

5. Nadix, needs 2 or less, would hit but doesn't fire due to lost target.

4. Ryerson runs up to cover, will be able to move forward & shoot next round.

4. Endilev continues to power up plasma gun.

2. Patel (rifle) & Ensign 3 move.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

The Edosian scientist calmly reviews his most recent observation of the strange new phenomena of the Slaver artifacts.
"Hmm. Intriguing. She didn't seem to activate her teleport device manually, which suggests telepathic control."

Then: "The artifacts she has stolen make her invisible to our tricorders, yet we need to find her."

Nadix's golden eyes look into the Rod of Life in his third hand as he tries to activate it with his alien mind. He wants the Rod of Life to locate the Romulan Commander.

Coxa II: Showdown in the Coxan Village
Stardate 2271.3.24: 1623h

The Janus is due to rendezvous in orbit at 1800.

Image

Nadix fixes his mind on the strange device of strange technological wonder in his hands. After a minute, he begins to sense a murky image forming behind his eyes: another Slaver artifact is here, in this village! Nearby, somewhere… to the east or perhaps north! Then the image fades, his mind fatigued by the concentration.

Dr. Ryerson scans all around them, and nervously the ensigns take his lead, looking for any sign of the Romulan Commander. No trace is found. Outside or through any windows or open doorways. The winds are too loud to hear much beyond the party's own voices as they coordinate a secure perimeter.

Chief Endilev's prototype plasma gun grows hot in his hand, humming and shaking violently as it begins to overheat! Without a target, he issues an Andorian curse and fires the weapon harmlessly into the sky.

Dr. Ryerson:

"I'm not picking up any readings but the artifact is most likely masking her life signs. Commander is possible to adjust your tricorder to pick up movement of the surrounding area? If the artifact is masking her signature we could detect the surroundings foliage for erratic movement not consistent with the wind. That may provide us with a direction to tracker her."

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"Unfortunately, my tricorder was destroyed, Doctor. But I believe the Rod of Life may be able to detect the other artifacts of the Slaver Empire. Please follow me as I attempt to establish contact," the Edosian science explorer requests as he slowly moves northeast, opening his alien, tri-lobed mind to the inexplicable relic in his third hand.
